A new study in the JAMA indicates that
omega-3 fatty acid supplements may keep at-risk kids from developing type 1 diabetes. The study found that kids who did eat fish, nuts or other sources of omega-3 fatty acids had a 55% less chance of developing diabetes. (I linked to the National Review of Medicine site because JAMA charges you a $15 fee to view their articles. Ouch.)
Sometimes I'm not sure what to think about these studies. Olivia was diagnosed when she was not quite three years old, so I suppose I could have given her Omega-3 supplements. I guess I'll have to figure out how to incorporate them into the two little girls' diets - I don't know that they'll eat fish and that's an expensive food to waste if they don't like it. Plus the whole mercury thing...honestly, some days I wonder if anything is safe to eat any more.

I walked into my local Whole Foods Body store with the best of intentions. I wanted just one item. I didn't know what brand to buy, but I had a general idea of what I was looking for. When the salesperson said the magic words, "What can I help you find today," I should have run far away. Instead, we started a dialog that left me leaving the store with a full bag and an empty wallet.

Apparently, almost 20 percent of those surveyed said they'd rather die 8 to 10 years early and avoid treatments.
Not me. I'd rather have pinpricks in my fingers and needles in my belly, and keep my eyes, legs and kidneys in working order. Sure, it would be better to not have diabetes, but these are the cards I've been dealt and I'm just gonna have to deal with it.

Olivia has two half-sisters, whom I refer to online as Boo and The Bug. Boo is 3-1/2 years old and The Bug is 20 months. Both are healthy, although The Bug concerns me sometimes. There's nothing concrete there, it's just this vague, nebulous cloud of worry. Well, maybe not too vague; she does drink an inordinate amount of water. No ketones, no peeing thru the diaper on a regular basis, but the drinking incessantly thing niggles at the back of my brain.
Anyway.
When Boo was born, we participated in the
TRIGR study. That study is finished, but the
TrialNet study is ongoing. Every year, at camp, there is someone there from TrialNet, trying to get people to have their children tested. I haven't done it.

I thought for sure I was going to be late.
I got in my car at 7:20 - I'd have enough time to make it into Providence for my
8:00 appointment with the doc - with time to spare. But there was traffic. A lot of it.
I was fairly certain my blood pressure would be through the roof when I finally arrived at the doctor's office 5 minutes late.

In response to my post about no longer
taking insulin, a reader commented: "I don't understand why you are still eating carbs if not eating them keeps your blood sugar down." That's a very good question and one with a complicated answer.
When I was first diagnosed, I went to see a dietitian, who told me I could eat whatever I wanted, in moderation and in the right combination. She gave some examples that sounded great in theory but just didn't work in the real world. Imagine my dismay when my blood sugar clocked in at 250 two hours after eating two slices of white toast with peanut butter and half a banana with a glass of milk.
