Well here's something I didn't see coming: Sugar-Free Chocolate Chip Girl Scout cookies. I walked into the lunch room at work and there, on the stainless steel countertop, rested this never-before-seen box of cookies.
"Where did these come from?" I asked my co-worker.
"No idea," they said, through a mouthful of crumbs. "But they're pretty tasty."
(I love when people without diabetes can't tell that they're eating something less crammed with sugar than what they're used to.) (READ MORE)

It's sad when a basic necessity becomes a luxury. But as a new mom, I'm learning fast that things I once took for granted, like a daily shower or a quick trip to Starbucks for the new Sugar-free Gingerbread Latte (yum! have you tried it?), are all too hard to come by these days.
The worst of it is sleep. During pregnancy, I was warned by parents everywhere to enjoy my sleep while I still could. And I knew having a baby in the house would make it difficult to catch a few Zzzs. But I honestly was not prepared for just how bad it would really be.
I'm lucky if I get four hours in a 24-hour period.
It takes a real toll on my mood (just ask my husband) and my energy level. Now research shows this chronic sleep deprivation is bad for my health and weight. (READ MORE)

I think God has a sick sense of humor. You see, I have this terrible love of sweets. My favorite things are cheesecake, biscuits, cookies, cakes, muffins, and all things carb-filled.
When I was diagnosed with diabetes at age 4, they told me and my family that I couldn't eat any sugar. So my life turned into a sugar-free terror. The cookies and candies were always different than what my brothers ate. I was told when and what to eat in every excruciating detail.
Then we started counting carbs when I was about 11. No more nasty sugar-free foods. I could drink real soda for once. I could eat my own birthday cake. I could eat anything!

My belly is grumbling, and not because it's dinner time. Anyone who's ever had a run-in with sugar-free candy knows what I'm talking about.
It started out innocently enough. Charged with the task of cleaning out the basement of his parents' house, hubby found his childhood Easter basket yesterday. He was excited. He wanted to share it. And what better timing. But considering our 5-month-old son is too young to get the whole meaning of the Easter Bunny, baskets and candy, he thought he'd be sweet and fill the basket for me.
Knowing that I'm doing my best to avoid carbs and keep my blood sugar under control, he did the thoughtful thing and bought me sugar-free candies. Chocolates, marshmallow bunnies and those good jellybeans that come in a surprizing varieties of flavors and taste like real, gourmet jellybeans, not some sub-par, sugar-free imposter. (READ MORE)

Being 17 at the time of diagnosis gives me some understanding of this years World Diabetes Day theme of "How Diabetes affects children and adolescents.
It was my senior year in High School. I had become Drum Major of the band. It was going to be a fun year but of course, diabetes had another plan.
I look back and remember the disbelief. The confusion that there was no cure. That I was destined to take insulin for the rest of my life. It was too much to handle on top of classes like Government and American Lit. (READ MORE)

I'm (cough) just wondering a few things about your products (sniffle). You see, before I had diabetes, I had many, many wonderful choices of cough drop flavors to help me get through a cold or even to ease the pain of a scratchy throat (blow nose). Now, though, I'm limited to a very few, select flavors in your sugar-free line.
(sneeze) And while we're on the topic of your sugar-free line, can you kindly explain why there are fewer cough drops per bag than the sugar-filled variety? Why (sniffle) do I have to pay the same amount for fewer pieces of relief? (cough) Furthermore, can you tell me why the "value pack" of your regular variety has 80 drops and the "value pack" of the sugar-free drops has only 70 and I pay the same amount (coughcough)?

Food is frustrating to me. Ever since I can remember, food has been a completely different aspect in my life than what my family, peers, and humanity deals with. Yes, food is a source of energy and existence. Yes, it's amazing. Yes, it packs on the pounds. But it's also a total love-hate relationship with me. For one reason: diabetes.
When I was first diagnosed, my life was thrown into "sugar-free" mode. My sugar intake was limited. I never tasted a real coke unless I was low. I didn't get to eat normal candy or normal desserts. Everything was tainted by fake sugar, a chemical taste that couldn't replace my childhood need for some old-fashioned sugar.

It's been one week since The Mr. had gastric bypass and he's doing really well. He rode his motorcycle the more than 20 miles to his firs post-op nutrition class yesterday! (Don't worry, it's not a crotch-rocket-type motorcycle.)
Since he has developed insulin resistance -- and also because it's apparently protocal after gastric bypass -- The Mr. has been checking his blood sugar four times a day: fasting, before lunch and dinner, and at bedtime.

It may be more politically correct in the diabetes community to say "person with diabetes," but to be honest, I’ve never really had too much of an issue with the term "diabetic."
When referring to Charlie, I suppose I use "diabetic" more in writing than I do in speaking. For example, if speaking, I’d say ...
"Excuse me, gentlemen. If you would be so kind, might you stop holding Charlie down and pouring sugar down his throat? You see, Charlie has diabetes."
I most likely wouldn’t say, "You see, Charlie is a diabetic."
Especially in a situation such as that. I wouldn’t want to make him feel worse.
I don’t know why I use the term more in writing. Maybe because it’s easier to find words that rhyme with "diabetic" than it is with "diabetes."
