I'm waiting for the call from Susanne to tell me how awful it was.

 

Charlie is getting blood drawn as we speak. It's been a while since he's had to do this and I think he's forgotten how painful it could be.

 

Susanne reminded him yesterday that she was taking him for blood work.

 

"Is that the one with the needle in my arm?" he asked.

 

"Yes," she answered.

 

"That's not so bad," he said bravely.

 

I was pretty shocked by his response. Typically he would cover his arm with his hand, throw himself down on the floor and stage a minor tantrum while spinning in a fetal breakdance position.

 

He's come a long way since December of 2006.

I received the normal JDRF research newsletter the other day. As usual, I perused the updates on diabetes. There was a large article on the new stem cell legislation movement, but I quickly passed over it. But two articles did catch my eye.

 

One was regarding "Insulin Fragment" Therapy, which I hadn't heard about before this newsletter. A study from the UK showed that "proinsulin peptide" therapy could seemingly restore the immune system without any adverse side effects (like the immunotherapy treatments for pancreas and cell transplants). More research had to be done, but it was still an important milestone.

 

The other article had to do with protein regeneration for adult beta cells. It was a snippet of an article regarding the prospect of regeneration and replication of beta cells for type 1s. All it did was leave hope. Hope for regrowth. Hope for a life without diabetes.

Got home from work, nuked my blackened pork chops and sat down at the table beside Susanne.
"So there's this company in England that has created cell clusters similar to those the body uses to control blood sugar," I tell her before lunging into my pork.
She sips her water and nods.
"Oh?"
"Yeah. Pretty cool. Also, in another study in mice, it seems adult blood could be a richer source of insulin-creating stem cells than fertilized eggs," I continue.
"Uh huh."
"Yep. Hey, I had another idea for our fundraiser , "
That's when she stops me.
"Can we not talk about diabetes anymore tonight?"
Susanne is knee-deep in the trenches every day; desperately pulling down high sugars like helium-filled balloons that refuse to stay grounded. She spends other days saving Charlie from catastrophic lows. Saving our family. Making very difficult decisions. Taking blood from him in the wee hours of the night like a vampire.
