This weekend, my wife and I attended a wedding for one of her cousins.
I am not sure what it is but I dread attending weddings. It is like going to the dentist or having to file my taxes. I know I have to go but I really REALLY don't want to.
Unlike the other two examples, I usually leave a wedding having had a good time. This wedding was no exception.
I am not really into all the flowery stuff and decorations but I must say, it was one of the nicest weddings I have ever been to as far as their decor. I know guys, it is not the manly thing to point out but that is what was amazing! It really was nice.
The bride's bouquet was made up of what looked like 5 dozen roses which looked really cool and the centerpieces at the tables we really classy looking. It made me feel bad for not being as "into" all this stuff when we got married but oh well. Maybe that stuff comes with age. (READ MORE)

My mother had diabetes the last 20 years of her life. She was insulin-dependent but she wasn't Type 1 or Type 2. Mom had acute pancreatitis throughout the early '70s and had 90% of her pancreas removed just after the Blizzard of '77 in Buffalo. There was later some speculation that she had some beta cells left or some regenerated because Mom would have horrendous blood sugar swings seemingly out of nowhere.
I remember once going to a mall in a big city 2 hours from home a couple years after the surgery and ending up having an ambulance called for her. Mom kept eating sugar packets thinking she was low, and kept getting worse and worse. As I remember it, when she got to the hospital she was extremely high. (READ MORE)

Since last night, my numbers have really confused me. The last week has been rough with highs by the dozens, insulin resistance, and just all around diabetes havoc. But last night, I thought I saw the clearing in the woods with my first low in 7 days.
Yet I still woke up at 257 after a normal dinner, low carb treatment (only a cup of juice and nothing else), and increased Lantus. So I added an extra unit onto the bolus for the high and a little extra for my breakfast. And ended up at 108 in the afternoon.

I've worked really hard the past few months to lose some weight. I've been eating better (cutting out fast food, "extras" like dinner rolls or second servings, and leaving the snacks on the snack aisle at the grocery store). On top of that, I'm working out about three times a week either at the gym or on the treadmill at home. And I'm proud to say that I've lost six pounds and several inches.
But the past week has thrown a major kink in my progress. I'm too scared to even step on the scale to see how these low and "lower" blood sugars are affecting me. I know my calorie intake has increased between the cokes, snacks, and extra carbs I'm consuming to offset these things.

My recent bout of stomach troubles brought on a strange appetite. For several days, I didn't really want to eat at all. Foods made me cringe at the thought. TV commercials featuring meats and sweets and cheeses sent my stomach into turmoil. But when I started to recover from the worst part of it, my appetite didn't return the way that it usually does.
I typically have an iron stomach. I don't get tummy troubles. Nausea on occasion but only relating to hormones or stress. But never an inability to eat. Or to eat my favorite foods.
But Monday through Wednesday, I was experiencing just that. I munched on Ritz crackers, Coke, and applesauce. I tried a basic meal at Chick-fil-a and tomato soup and a grilled cheese for dinner one night. Yet my stomach was still tossing and turning.

While researchers have isolated in the vicinity of two dozen genes associated with autoimmune (type 1) diabetes, we still haven't figured out how one of a pair of identical twins might develop type 1 diabetes, while the other remains diabetes-free. (Such a case exists.) This suggests that while genes may be part of the equation, they're not the sum total of "why someone gets type 1 diabetes".
