As if diabetes wasn’t in the back of my mind enough as it is, the music industry seems to be playing a little joke on me to keep it on my mind even more often. We all know the tools that keep us healthy are filled with wires, and electronics, and batteries, and that has been a stellar improvement on diabetes care over the decades. But with all this technological advancement comes the need for increased safety measures, including alarms that beep to proclaim an insulin pump error, a successful blood test, or a completed phase of setup. The joke becomes less funny when I am driving down the highway with some music going, focused on the road, when an identical tone comes from the stereo that sounds like my insulin pump.

The following filk developed last weekend in the thick of Christmas Cookie baking. You may appreciate the irony of "healthy cookies"...

Oatmeal, the Raisin Cookie

With apologies to Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, Rudolph, Kris, Burl, and the Singing Cowboy, himself...

There are Cardamom Spice Rounds, and Cheese Straws, and Spritzen
Chocolate chippers and others with mix-ins
But even at Christmas we bake
The "most healthy" cookie, by Jake!

Oatmeal, the Raisin Cookie
Had a very bumpy top
And once you bit into it,
You would never, ever stop

I love this time of year so much and there are dozens of reasons why. Christmas time elicits so many warm feelings of love and togetherness. My mind is instantly filled with great memories and thoughts. My body just seems to run on happy auto-pilot all the time. I just feel good. People in general just seem to be so much more pleasant. Everybody's energy is so much more peaceful and caring. I constantly wonder how the world would be if everyone would just stay in this peaceful mind frame year round. Wouldn't that just be amazing? I wish. Right? One of the things that I like the most is hearing all the Christmas songs.

Music has always colored my life and, in turn, my life with diabetes.  Sometimes blue, sometimes neon pink, sometimes black.   My parents always had a record player, an eight track, a tape deck in our house and there were always plenty of albums and tapes to choose from.  Everything from the Beatles to Helen Reddy to Frank Sinatra to Devo.  When we camped in the summer, there was always a guitar around and some beautiful voices among my parents and their friends.  I never was instrumentally inclined, but I’ve been singing pretty much since I could talk.   So, yeah, music was – and is -  central to my existence.  And there are songs or musicians that I will always identify with moments or periods in my life.

I love music.

Ever since I was a little kid I could sing and dance to every song on the Earth, Wind, and Fire greatest hits record. I would dance whenever Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder was played even if it was a jukebox in a crowded restaurant. And no matter the time of night, when Barney Miller’s theme song started my mother said I would come running from my room in my PJ’s to dance to the song in front of the TV.

I love playing it, listening to it, and even writing it sometimes. When I was a kid I played the trumpet. In Junior High learned percussion which I played throughout high school and in my 20’s I learned to play guitar. Lots of music always playing around my home and car. I love it.

I am overdue on blood work. There is lab paperwork that I have been carrying around for months in my bag. It was given to me by my endo back in September so I could get blood drawn in December and make an appointment to see him. Yeah, that has not happened.
December is a busy time for everyone and frankly I just did not make the time to do it. So I figured I would call, make an appointment, and then hit the lab to give them my blood. It usually takes a week to get lab results so I make sure I have my dates set when I make the appointment. It sucks to go to the doctors and have nothing to really talk about. (READ MORE)

Yesterday we had a special “God and Country” service at church. We typically do a similar service under the flag pole on the 4th of July each year but this year we decided to do that service on Sunday instead so hopefully more of the congregation can enjoy and participate in this moving service.

The service starts outside under the flag pole. The local boy scouts troop retires the flag we fly, presents it to a veteran in our congregation, and posts a new flag. I love this stuff because, although I may not seem like it, I am a very patriotic person.

After that we all went into the church to continue the service. Myself, my daughter, and a few other singers all stood upfront and sang all of the theme songs from each military branch. As we sang them we had any veterans from each branch stand to be recognized.

It's 10:30 p.m. on a Wednesday night. I'm not ready to go to bed, yet I know I need to. I'm not tired; I know that if I "go to bed" I'll lie there awake, which will only piss me off.

I've been sitting at the computer for an hour trying to figure out how to make a Flash slideshow presentation for my web site. It's a lot more complicated than I thought it would be. There's HTML involved. That's almost as bad as making me do math.

And... am I shaking? Yes. But the energy involved in walking to the next room to grab my meter to test is not appetizing right now. Because I know if I walk into my dark bedroom to test my sugar I'll be lulled into bed and as I mentioned before... I'm not ready to go to bed yet.

I am officially moved and mostly settled in. I've unpacked everything, organized most of it, and even hung up a few pictures. I need to get my curtains put up and throw away the remaining boxes. Other than that, I'm here starting my new life.

I've been okay so far. My mom spent the night when we first moved in and stayed quite awhile till the next day. Then Marvin came over for a few hours that night. Since then, I've been alone. And up until now, I've been doing fine.

I'm not homesick now nor having any health issues (it's only been 4 days), but I'm upset. The job that I was really wanting and praying to get didn't come through and I just can't understand why. I am a strong candidate and I wanted that job so desperately. The disappointment is killer.

In the summer of 1996 Susanne and I saw Semisonic perform live in a small, dank bar on the Jersey shore in support of their latest release, Great Divide. Two years later, the Minneapolis rock band's massive hit song "Closing Time" would explode across radio stations around the world.
