Family. Health. Necessities.
We were all thankful for so much as we shared our turkey feast this year. We are spending the Thanksgiving weekend in Albuquerque New Mexico this year with my sisters and mother. Having to make a 13 hour drive made me thankful for low carb snacks and caffeine too.
The thing that stands out as I contemplate the meal last night was the laughter I heard and participated in. I laughed a lot. We brought up old memories of family events and funny stories. Joked about each others habits and quirks, and just laughed at my kids and my nieces being silly. It was a lot of fun and so comforting.
One of the few qualities I have is the ability to make people laugh. I love to poke fun at myself, the world, and pretty much everything! I am also good about not being mean but just funny. All and all it was a very good time. (READ MORE)

I went to a movie this past weekend and found myself cracking up as I walked in with all my pockets full of sugar and snacks. I thought "I just hope one of you little movie theatre employees says something to me". I had already thought about what I was going to say if one of them did. "Uh yeah, you see, I'm diabetic so I'm just going to ignore your little 'no outside food or drink policy!'" I'm kidding of course; I wouldn't get ugly with a theatre employee. But I had already decided that I was going to enjoy seeing how they would react or watch them try to muster up the courage to tell me "no"! As I sat down in the theater, I got tickled again. I love it when I start pulling snacks out of my pockets that people sitting around me clearly know I didn't buy there. Anyways, I really found myself loving every minute of the movie I watched called, "Into the Wild".

I'm sorry Edy's. I am officially declaring you as a suspect in the wrongful and nefarious elevation of my son's blood sugar.

Your Dibs bite-size ice cream snacks are both delicious and convenient. Your collaboration with Nestle Crunch was nothing short of brilliant. But I'm afraid we may need to part ways. At 14 grams of carbs per bag, I thought maybe, just maybe we could coexist in this topsy-turvy world. But you went and ruined it.

You went and ruined it by acting like pizza. Normally, ice cream has little effect on Charlie's blood sugar. The last few times Charlie has had Dibs, his blood sugars went way up and stayed way up with no intention of coming down.

The past weekend I spent 3 days at a Christian Camp in the mountains working at a retreat called Via de Cristo or Cursillo. Some you may have heard of it before. It is one of many 3 day movements around the world used to rekindle the fire of ones faith. My wife and I attended Via de Cristo, which is a co-ed non denominational version of Cursillo, a few years back and try to serve on the team at least once a year for new people going through the experience. I am up 1 pound from a month ago. I've been up as high as 3 pounds and as low as 2 pounds down. Truth be told, it's more like 6 weeks I have been doing this yo-yo trick up and down that 5 pound range.
I've been fairly good about logging my food. The days that the log stops at lunch are the problem. The afternoon snack attacks are sabotaging my efforts. I feel helpless to stop them. It's really detrimental to be feeling this way. (READ MORE)

Being a dad with diabetes can be tricky. I watch everything my kids do hoping I do not spot a symptom of this stupid disease in their lives. When they want a lot to drink I worry. If I hear them get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom I worry. If they are tired for no reason I worry.

Besides keeping a watchful eye on my kids I am also always careful about what I fill our cupboards with. We don’t my sugary cereals Hostess is not one of our major food groups, and regular soda is almost never in our home.

The bad side about this is feeling like the enemy of fun. I know I am making good choices for them but at the same time I feel kind like a jerk who doesn’t want them to enjoy kid stuff.

Olivia has had diabetes for almost ten years now. The first few years were a struggle, emotionally and blood sugar-wise. I felt like I'd gone back to school - I had to learn this new language, this new way of life and it was hard.
It's been so long now, though, that diabetes care is pretty much second nature for us. We all look at carb information on packages of food, we're all really good at guessing when that information isn't there. I've talked about this stuff with my family, too. I thought they were on board with it all. I didn't expect them to be as expert as I am (and believe me, I know I could always know more), but I thought they'd at least gleaned information from all of my speeches over the years. (READ MORE)

I've worked really hard the past few months to lose some weight. I've been eating better (cutting out fast food, "extras" like dinner rolls or second servings, and leaving the snacks on the snack aisle at the grocery store). On top of that, I'm working out about three times a week either at the gym or on the treadmill at home. And I'm proud to say that I've lost six pounds and several inches.

But the past week has thrown a major kink in my progress. I'm too scared to even step on the scale to see how these low and "lower" blood sugars are affecting me. I know my calorie intake has increased between the cokes, snacks, and extra carbs I'm consuming to offset these things.

Over the weekend, I met up with Nicole to see Blithe Spirit at the Trinity Rep, in Providence, RI. If you have a chance to see this, go. It's wickedly funny. I loved it.

After the show, we went out to a late lunch/early supper (lupper?) and the talk turned, as it so often does, to diabetes. We talked about food choices that Nicole made as a child and what Olivia makes for food choices now. Nicole was telling me that her mother doled out cookies to her, 2 at a sitting, which made her feel as though she had to horde them and hide them in her room, to have whenever she wanted.

I don't go thru that with Olivia, but she does tend to plow thru food. I've pretty much eliminated junk food from our house. I still get it once in a while, but it's not always here. What is here are good-for-you snacks, like fresh fruit and yoghurt and whole grain crackers.

Sometimes being diabetic really doesn't bother me all that much. It's become such a major part of my life over the past seventeen years that it's more like breathing or eating. It's usually a love/hate relationship, for sure. I love who it's made me become and the experiences I have because of it, but I hate the day in and day out of this disease.

Lately, that love/hate balance is a little off kilter. I'm not upset or anything, just overly annoyed by the necessities of this disease. I've been in a snacking kind of mood between all the work that I have to do. I just don't want to cook and money is tight so I don't want to eat out a lot. So snacks are my "go tos."
