At the end of this month, I'll see my endocrinologist for the first time since leaving the hospital with that adorable little bundle of joy. Prior to getting pregnant, I started taking insulin and I'm still on it. When I see the doctor again, I'll have the opportunity to change things up. Now that I'm done breastfeeding, I can go back on oral medications and put the insulin behind me.
Today, I started questioning if I really want to do that. What are the pros and cons of oral meds versus insulin? The obvious is a pill versus a shot, but after 15 months on insulin, I really don't have a problem with needles. Insulin is natural and the only real side effect is low blood sugar. Most oral meds have much worse side effects, like upset stomachs, headaches and rashes, in addition to hypoglycemia. (READ MORE)

One of the things I hate most about having type 1 diabetes and polycystic ovarian syndrome (or PCOS) is the battle over my weight. Between blood sugars, insulin, and hormones, it can be incredibly tough to keep my weight at my acceptable level. Lately, that struggle seems even worse than normal. And I know a lot of is water weight that I can't seem to shake thanks to the hormones and possibly oral contraceptives.

 

In 2009, I began working out several hours multiple times per week. I was doing intensive cardio as well as a lot of strength training. I would spend hours on the treadmill (not at a time), at the track, or in a "Guts and Glutes" class. And I finally saw results on the scale. My weight dipped by about 15 pounds.

Which would you like to hear first? I guess I'll start with the bad news and get my whining out of the way first. The scale is up this week. Granted it's only half a pound, but the frustrating part is I have been working so hard at this. I've been following Weight Watchers faithfully since Thanksgiving and I've only lost about 2 and a half pounds. What's worse is I'm starting to begrudge people at the meeting who lose more than that each week. Selfish, isn't it?
In reviewing my diet, exercise and lifestyle, I'm even more annoyed because I'm eating less food (and healthier food, at that), exercising more, drinking water and even getting more sleep than I had been. But I'm still not losing. What do I need to do? I'm open to all suggestions, except "be patient." I don't do well with patience. (READ MORE)

I've been trying to stick to my new diet and exercise plan in hopes to lose weight. I did a good job on exercise until this week and I've kept up the food stipulations for about four weeks now. Yet I'm not losing any kind of weight. I'm not looking more toned. I'm exactly the same.

 

And I am so frustrated. I know that losing weight doesn't happen over night, but I can't even seem to get half a pound off much less a significant difference to make me feel better. I have to say that doesn't motivate me to keep going.

 

Today, I splurged on food and got lunch at Chick-fil-a and didn't pick a healthy option. I haven't run since last Thursday although I did move the entire weekend. But I can't seem to get my tennis shoes on or my behind into the gym this week. I just want to sleep and eat.

So apparently I snore. And apparently it’s pretty bad. I’ve woken up to myself snoring a couple times. Even as bad as the lip-flapping snore. It’s kind of funny when you think about it.

 

The Mr. says he’s seen me appear to stop breathing while I snore, which is an indication of sleep apnea. Before The Mr. had gastric bypass he snored pretty badly too. And there were times that I’d lie awake and listen to him stop breathing too. He went through a sleep study where he was diagnosed with sleep apnea and then started using a c-pap machine. (Now that he’s lost about 175 lb., the snoring has stopped and he hasn’t used the c-pap in probably a year or so.)

 

When using the c-pap, The Mr. said he could tell a big difference in how tired he was throughout the day. If there was a night when he didn’t use the machine, he woke up much more fatigued.

I have been exceptionally busy the past 2 weeks. Company from out of town, big project at work and the common cold making it's rounds in our family. Life with an infant, preschooler, full-time job and 1 hour commute is already pretty busy, so these additions ratchet me up to an unacceptable stress level.
What suffers? My bg (blood glucose) levels, meal planning and my milk supply.
I'm trying to restart the weight loss I enjoyed the first 3 months after the baby was born. I feel like I'm on a tightrope - if I eat enough to keep my milk supply up, I gain weight. If I eat low enough calorie to lose weight, my milk supply plummets. Especially when I'm not getting enough sleep. (READ MORE)

It's sad when a basic necessity becomes a luxury. But as a new mom, I'm learning fast that things I once took for granted, like a daily shower or a quick trip to Starbucks for the new Sugar-free Gingerbread Latte (yum! have you tried it?), are all too hard to come by these days.
The worst of it is sleep. During pregnancy, I was warned by parents everywhere to enjoy my sleep while I still could. And I knew having a baby in the house would make it difficult to catch a few Zzzs. But I honestly was not prepared for just how bad it would really be.
I'm lucky if I get four hours in a 24-hour period.
It takes a real toll on my mood (just ask my husband) and my energy level. Now research shows this chronic sleep deprivation is bad for my health and weight. (READ MORE)

I’ve had a really hard time with my writing/not writing lately. In December I blogged only once, and so far this month I’ve blogged twice.

 

This is kind of weird for me because I’m so used to writing so often. It hurts, actually, that I haven’t been doing more of it. It’s not for lack of trying, though. I’ve written countless Post-It notes to myself with blog topics and have every intention of writing when I get home and then I don’t.

 

And it’s not like I’m forgetting to do it, I just don’t do it. Or I decide that I’d rather do something else. I think about the Post-It note stuck to my calendar and about all the things I would say in the blog and how wonderfully eloquent I would be. And then I just don’t do it.

I have a confession: I haven't exercised since before Thanksgiving. E-gads! Ugh, and I'm so feeling it. My pants are feeling tighter, I'm more tired, I'm more cranky, it's harder to bend over and tie my shoes, blah, blah, blah.
There are so many excuses I could hand out for this (stress being a big one), all of which would come back to me staying up later (right now it's almost my bedtime and I should be getting ready for bed and not writing, for example) and, therefore, having trouble forcing myself out of bed in the morning. I tried blaming it on my alarm clock, too, but I think even that is a cop out.
I absolutely hate making New Year's resolutions. I can never stick to them and I never have really taken them seriously. I don't really know how to get myself to stick to that kind of goal. (READ MORE)

I've been mysteriously absent from the blogging world again. My apologies! I've been busy with baby and holidays, and keeping myself healthy despite the viral-cold-winds that are a-blowing. With a school teacher husband, it's hard to keep germs out of the house!
I thought I'd touch base with a quick recap of the last few weeks.
I took the month of December off of blood sugar management to focus on weight loss. I rejoined Weight Watchers (I'm a lapsed lifer) and found a meeting that's more like family with a great leader, Kim. Despite the holidays, I managed to stick to the program. (READ MORE)
