A kink already.

 

I told Mom this morning about my new schedule. The one where my retired mother doesn't have to get up so early any more to be to my house by 7:15 a.m. to take care of the kids before school so The Mr. and I can get to work on time. She loved it, by the way. Also because she knows I need and want to exercise.

 

Not long after she left the house, though, she called to remind me that my plan to start my new schedule on Monday (I hate starting on Mondays) may need to be rethunk. (rethinked? reconsidered?) No. 1 and No. 2 start their two-week spring break on Monday and they are going to day camp. Camp that's on *my* way to work. Camp that *I* was planning to drop them off at around 7 a.m. on my way to work. Camp that I'm not sure I can convince The Mr. to take them to because it's slightly out of his way and will require him to give up driving his motorcycle to work for two weeks.

First, let me tell you that I used my very last sensor in February, and didn't even get a full life out of it. I decided to try to different spot on my belly and it wound up being a crap spot because the readings would come in sketchy and after about twoish days I realized most of the adhesive had come off. So I begrudgingly yanked it.

 

But I was in the midst of fighting my insurance company for coverage of my sensors and I was certain that the situation would be resolved soon and that it wouldn't be long until I had replacement sensors. And then one day, like magic, I got word that the sensors were covered. It was like an enormous weight was gone.

 

I quickly took care of the other weight on my shoulders: paying my deductible from the last batch of pump supplies I received. Medtronic said I only needed to pay it in full before I ordered supplies again so I was taking my time.

So the other day when I wrote about digging up Dex for another round of constant blood-sugar watching, I really thought it would be as easy as calling the medical supply company and giving them my credit card number.

 

But oh no. It couldn't be that simple.

 

"Problem" No. 1: The medical supply company told me the sensors were on back order, but that they should ship within a week. I really didn't have a problem with that since I wasn't desperate for the sensors and had planned to use Dex on a more casual basis.

The view of our front porch is blocked from the side by a tree-like bush. But that didn't stop me from slowing down as I drove by on Friday to see if I could spot a FedEx box through the green leaves. No, I couldn't wait the two seconds to pull into the driveway to look for the box. Haven't I already established that I'm the world's most impatient person?
 

I couldn't get out of the car fast enough. Couldn't get the kids unbuckled fast enough. I had seen the white, blue and reddish box and knew it was the free sensors my DexCom rep said he would provide to me if I ordered the Dex system even though my insurance wouldn't pay for the sensors.

I should have known. I should have known it wouldn't have been as easy as "Now your sensors are covered. Call XX Medical Supply company to order. Call me with questions."
 

So, last time I wrote about this, I was getting some much loved satisfaction regarding finally thinking my insurance company had come to its senses about this disposable coverage crap. I mean, really, they'll pay for the machine but not the parts that make it work? Ugh!
 

So the last email I got from my health advocate, L, said the Medical Supply company had called her and said the disposable sensors were covered under the plan. She broke down the costs based on my deductible and 20% responsibility after the deductible was met. And then basically left it at that, thinking her job was done. And for all I knew it was.

When I inserted the first sensor on Saturday, I thought it might give me a little trouble. It'd been through a lot in the last months (traveling around in my "everyday" case and moving from fridge to backpack to suitcase multiple times). It looked old, it looked like it wouldn't work. But I gave it a shot anyway.

 

And my suspicions were confirmed. It gave me two error messages before showing me a steady level in the 50's when I was perfectly okay. Instead of messing with a crazy sensor and wondering about its accuracy for days, I changed it out. I had an entire new box of them anyway and I don't use them often enough to be upset on throwing one out.

If some of you didn't mind my cussing so much, right now I'd be screaming from the rooftops "It's about f-ing time!"

 

Oh look at that; I said it anyway!

 

So if the squeeky wheel really does get the grease and if it's easier to catch flies with honey than vinegar then I just personified both of those idioms.

 

Since it had been more than one month since I first called the medical supply company to tell them I was ready to go ahead with an order and things were still screwed up on someone's end I decided to step in. Actually, I was ready to tell my doctor's office and the medical supply company that I was tired of being a go-between and that they needed to get this taken care of right. this. stinkin'. minute.

Yesterday when I left work I was ready to rip through the computer because I was so annoyed with a certain medical supply company.
 

I have taken a backseat to figuring out if my insurance company will cover my Dexcom sensors since I got involved with a company (paid for by my employer) who helps patients sort through these types of situations. I believe my rep is also a nurse, because she is quite often out of the office. So when I'd send casual emails if I hadn't heard from her, I frequently got an auto response saying she was out of the office. This kind of annoyed me, actually.

I feel like I'm in an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants.

 

OK first let me say that I really don't like feeling like this. If I could ban SpongeBob from my house I would. When I'm surfing the channels for the kids (man is it hard to please a 9 year old, 6 year old and 3 year old at the same time!) I have to force myself to not scream "Over my dead body!" when they all scream/chant "SpongeBob! SpongeBob! SpongeBob!"

 

I get that we all need a little mindless entertainment at times (which is why I often choose solitaire over a game of hearts with the computer because solitaire takes fewer brain cells) but my God I just want to poke SpongeBob in the eye. And Patrick.

Do you ever have that "D'oh! Why did I make such a big deal out of that" feeling/moment/day? That's kind of what I've been going through lately.

 

I feel really terrible saying this, but I think I'm doing OK without Dex. Which is kind of weird to me considering the amount of energy I put into getting my insurance company to approve the sensors.

 

I think one reason I fought so hard to get the sensors is because I had just started exercising again and I was (still am!) terrified of going low while walking. In the last twoish months since I started walking I haven't had any blood-sugar-related issues.
