I will not be walking in this Sunday's Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes.
I will not be walking in costume.
I will not be walking out of costume.
I will not be walking.
I will be running... the New York City Marathon.
Note that I did not say "running in the Marathon", but "running the Marathon".

I haven't taken my Metformin for the last two days. The nausea was really getting to me over the past week and I decided that I just couldn't handle it any more. At least, not right now. When I had a major research paper due as well as a lot of work and apartment stress. I do plan to start back on it again, probably tomorrow, and probably back at the 250 mg instead of the 500 mg.
My blood sugars are still getting a lot better. My monthly average is actually below 200! Which has been on my goal list for quite some time now. So I'm very excited to see these numbers dropping into more acceptable ranges. I still have some problem areas (fearing lows after a run, stacking my boluses, and the like), but for the most part I am running consistently in better areas.

Europe is absolutely amazing. I love the languages, the atmosphere, the weather. I find it enthralling that you walk everywhere. The open air markets are insane. Everything is so perfect, so ancient, so human about this place.
Every time I turn around, we're learning something new about a culture, a language, or just this life in general. Yesterday, we toured a small town in Italy. It was perfectly picteresque. Today was Barcelona where you could buy exquisite chocolate creations in an open air market.
We still have four more stops here on the cruise plus the few days we've added to our trip for Italy. I'm totally excited about these next places. They are completely new and I have no idea what to expect.

I should not have worn shorts to the gym. Even though it's like a bazillion degrees in there and running is more comfortable wearing them. I should not have. In fact, there's a reason I don't. Running shorts, even if they're comfortable, show off "all those scars..."Â
My thighs are one of my favorite pump site spots. They don't reject the canula - which often happens on my hips and belly. They don't get it the way of my clothes as happens with my arms. So I probably over use them - just a little bit. I try, mind you, to move away from there here or there, but old habits are pretty hard to break. Funny, there was a time when I absolutely hated putting in thigh sites. Not so much anymore.

I'm one of those annoying people who actually enjoys exercise. I love the feeling of my body running or walking in smooth motions, the way my muscles push through even the toughest movements, the feeling of being on top of the world when you're running down a trail. I don't shy away from most activities because I can't do them or don't enjoy them, instead I thrive on new exercises and overcoming my previous goals.
Just a short year and a half ago, I was on the biggest exercise kick ever. I'd done sports of all kinds in junior high and high school. I'd enjoyed them and even to this day still miss them. But in 2009, I was working out to lose weight. I was committed. Working out in the gym with classes or weights around 2 hours almost 7 days a week. Running on top of that.

I am so fatigued lately. I've been fighting these highs for a week now. It's definitely taking a toll on my body. I am generally tired, feeling antsy, and getting a little bit irritable. I still really have no clue where they are coming from either.
It started last Saturday after a high carb breakfast. A number that just wouldn't come down. I fought it all day. By Sunday, things were better but bounced again on Monday. And all throughout the week, it seemed to bounce back and forth. Wednesday was great, but Thursday was nasty.
Thanks to all the highs, I ended up running out of insulin on my trip to my new town (for my two job interviews). Before I left, I knew the bottle was low but it should have easily lasted me the two days that I'd be up there and then some. Instead, Thursday afternoon brought about a seemingly empty bottle of Humalog.

Now that I'm off the Accutane, I can really see how my energy was affected. I need less sleep these days. I wake up feeling more refreshed than before. And I can make it longer in the day before feeling like I just can't go on anymore. That isn't to say that I'm 100% energetic and some days are worse than others, but overall I'm liking the way this feels.
It's so much better that I've already gotten back into my running routine. I ran twice last week. And I plan to run twice again this week. I'm not doing as much as I was before, actually about half. But it's still something.
Last summer and early fall, I was running about three times a week for two miles a time. I was also working out in the gym or at home at least twice a week. It was the burst that I needed to lose twenty pounds.

One of the things I hate most about having type 1 diabetes and polycystic ovarian syndrome (or PCOS) is the battle over my weight. Between blood sugars, insulin, and hormones, it can be incredibly tough to keep my weight at my acceptable level. Lately, that struggle seems even worse than normal. And I know a lot of is water weight that I can't seem to shake thanks to the hormones and possibly oral contraceptives.
In 2009, I began working out several hours multiple times per week. I was doing intensive cardio as well as a lot of strength training. I would spend hours on the treadmill (not at a time), at the track, or in a "Guts and Glutes" class. And I finally saw results on the scale. My weight dipped by about 15 pounds.

Did you hear about this dad that found himself on the wrong side of the diabetes tracks? This may be ancient news by now, viewed from the internet eyes of the informed masses, but his story is touching and thought provoking. In North Platte, Nebraska a six year old little boy took over steering his father's vehicle after the man passed out from low blood sugar. While driving home from a restaurant dinner, the dad's blood sugar tanked and sent him slumping back into the driver's seat, without accelerating, but with the car still rolling down the road. His young son hopped on his dad's lap, grabbed the wheel and steered around until a patrolling police officer could intervene.

I've lost 16 pounds in the past 7 months or so. The bulk of it was lost over the summer when I was working out on average four times a week. And the last few pounds slid off within the first month of school, with the increase in activity on a daily basis and the lack of frequent calorie consumption.
My clothes are baggy now. I have jeans from high school that I'm still squeezing into though, so I'm determined to lose a little bit more weight. My body feels better, looking in the mirror is much more appealing these days than it has been in the past. And I'm proud of myself for working so hard to make this happen.
So when I showed my mom a pair of pants that have about three inches to spare around the waist, her response threw me. "That's really great!" But it was followed with "Are you sure you're not losing weight because you're running high?"
