5 out of 7 days! That's right - I exercised 5 out of 7 days last week! Wooooo-Hooooo - yay me! Ok, so it's overboard but I need to congratulate myself a lot for it to have any affect. I have what's called an external locus of control for motivation (take a quiz on yours here) - in other words if you tell me 'good job' it means much more to me than if I say it to myself.
Exercise does make a huge difference in my sugar levels, my fasting level today was 88!
I have been using stars on our kitchen calendar as motivation. Yes, the little star stickers that teachers use. Blue stars for 15 minutes or more, silver for 30 minutes and above and the elusive gold star for an hour. Sounds silly and I felt silly about it until I started getting a glow seeing the stars stack up on the September page. We all have to find what works to motivate and reward ourselves. (READ MORE)

Several weeks ago I sat in the kitchen of No. 2’s Girl Scout leader, chatting with other moms as we put together holiday crafts for the council’s fund-raising bazaar in December.
As the morning was winding down and the girls had deserted the crafts for more important things, we began cleaning up the mess (ugh! glue and glitter!) and chatting.
When S said she needed to call that day to schedule a family portrait session for the next day I didn’t hesitate to pipe up quickly and tell her that I am an amateur photographer and would be happy to do a family session with them the next day.
“Oh! And you’d be… cheaper than…,” S began.
“Free. I’d be free,” I told her.

Last week, I started a new "game" with myself. I call it Five For Five. I focus on five healthy habits for five days, earning points as I go and working toward a reward. Each week, the points accumulate for an even bigger reward.
I'm proud to report that I earned 23 of a possible 25 points last week. My daily habits were drinking three liters of water, exercising for at least 30 minutes, doing 25 sit-ups, testing my blood sugar three out of four times and not eating any junk. I expected finding 30 minutes to exercise each day would be my biggest challenge, but it turns out that wasn't the case.
The two points I missed last week were for sit-ups. The first one, I'd gotten as far as 15 when the little boy started having a melt down next to me. I thought I'd get back to the other 10 in a little while, but the day got away from me and I forgot. Then on the last day of the game, I didn't do them at all. (READ MORE)

Nope, not a new Nancy Drew mystery, unfortunately. It's much more prosaic.
Olivia has been using the One Touch Mini since last summer. She got a new, downloadable one at the endo appointment in February. It's her favourite meter.
However, yesterday I went to put her numbers for the last couple of days in the meter and I noticed that she tested her blood sugar at 4-ish on Friday and never checked it again until the next day. She swears up and down that she did check it, but there's nothing in her pump and nothing in the meter. Check that - there are carbs and insulin doses in her pump, but no blood sugar readings.

I've recently learned that if I want to get something accomplished, I'd better make a game out of it. Like when I wanted to try to save money on groceries, I played the Grocery Game . And when hubby and I decided we needed to cut back on spending, we instituted No Money Mondays, where we don't spend any money on Mondays.
Now that I'm trying hard to get back on the weight-loss track, I've decided a new game is in order. I'm calling it "Five For Five." The rules are simple; I focus on five healthy habits for five days a week. For each habit I successfully accomplish each day, I earn one point. If I've earned 20 out of 25 points at the end of the round, I earn reward. (READ MORE)

Anjelica Huston, we have a problem.
"I feel low," he says.
"Are you sure?" I ask.
He shrugs his shoulders, his grey baseball mitt planted under his armpit.
"I don’t know, sort of."
I interrogate him.
"Do you feel funny? Tingly? Silly" Sweaty? Hungry?"
"I don’t know. A little. Maybe."

...I don't want to make the effort. This has absolutely nothing to do with the amount of insulin I take or optimal blood sugar control--although those aspects of dropping a few pounds would certainly be welcome.
I simply hate the way I look. I can't stand how I look in a mirror. I wonder all the time if people are staring at my thunder things or three-baby-having flabby abdomen. Realistically I know I'm the one focusing on these issues, but as a girl I still wonder what others think.
It's ironic, but I find myself being judgemental of other plus-size women. How can she be taken seriously when she's so chunky? I'm sure the judgements go both ways, and I suppose this affects my self-confidence in a way I haven't been able to truly see.
It's easy to pick apart all the things that I don't like about my body, and I don't look at myself too long in a mirror, and I often imagine how other people see me. (READ MORE)

I've said it before and I know others have too: it's awfully strange, considering my profession, that I don't read books. I've never been a book reader. Ever. I struggled through classes in high school and college that required reading novels.
I know, right? And yes I still want to write the Great American Novel. But that's different. Part of the reason I don't read more is that I'm easily distracted. I can sit down and read a chapter or two of a book, put it down and think that I'll be able to get back to it the next day. But then it's a week before I pick the book up again and I've forgotten what I've read.

Last week I set the bar high for myself. Too high. Out of a possible 25 points, I earned a total of 16. I can make all the excuses in the world for why I was not successful, but the truth of the matter is, I just wasn't as focused as I was the previous week.
But it's a new day, a new week and so far, I'm doing OK. I revamped my goals for the week, backtracking a bit closer to my original plan. This week, I'm focusing on:
1. Testing my blood sugar four times a day. Last week, I knocked this off the list entirely thinking I had it under control again, but then I slacked, so its back at the top of the list. (READ MORE)

"It’s classic OCD," the therapist said.
I wish I could blame diabetes for this, but I don’t think I can. While diabetes didn’t cause Charlie to have OCD, it did provide him with something to be obsessively compulsive about. The thought that his blood sugar could go dangerously low at any time provides the anxiety which triggers the compulsion to test his blood sugar all day long.
He’s showing other behaviors associated with OCD, but it's probably best that I keep those private.
