Overall, I like the Dex. I like looking at a nice, steady line first thing in the morning that confirms my overnight basals are set right. I like watching a pretty, pregnant rise and fall on the Dex showing that I've dosed appropriately for a meal. I like being able to push one button quickly while I'm working to see if I'm rising, falling or holding steady — I'm spending less time testing. I like that most of the time Dex is pretty close to my OneTouch.
 

I like that I found out I may be experiencing dawn phenomenon based on one morning's unexplainable rise from the 90s upon waking to the 150s before breakfast. Which reminds me that I'm not doing anything wrong before bed and that I may need to adjust my early morning basals slightly.

Drum roll please.
And the 2007 award for the most flippant comment related to diabetes management goes to ,
Mr. Travis Hudson, a reviewer of tech devices over at dvice.com, for his review of a shoe insole developed by New Zealand's Zephyr Technology called the ShoePod Diabetic, that "has the ability to detect diabetic peripheral neuropathy."
"Glucose, schmucose," the review begins.
"This allows yourself, or your doc to keep an active eye on your condition and provide plenty of preventative measures to keep those feet nice, healthy and still attached," writes Hudson. (READ MORE)

"What does pot have to do with diabetes?" The question came up in the course of a lunchtime conversation with Chris Goldstein of the Coalition for Medical Marijuana - New Jersey, as we discussed our respective advocacies. (New Jersey is currently in the middle of a medical-marijuana tug-of-war.) When the uses of medical marijuana are broached in the media, it's usually in conjunction with terminal cancer -- or intense, persistent pain. The last time I sat in on a presentation on medical marijuana, the speaker explained how it eased many of the symptoms of his late wife's multiple sclerosis. But diabetes? Tell me another one.

Things have been good these past couple of days. I have been working, working out, and overall my blood sugars seem to be pretty stable. Life is not too bad at the moment. Just as many of you, I have my good and bad days. I wanted to take the chance today to write about the good. Work is, well, work. At times it plays havoc with my sugar and it can be very stressful, but overall I am satisfied. At the end of the day or the end of the work week life gets instantly better. As soon as I walk out the door and I'm on my way to doing something non-work related, the problems I had disappear. Which leads me to my ultimate stress relief time - my workouts.

The theme for this week is "Manage Your Healthcare Team".  For me, and for many others with Type 2 diabetes, this is a laugh. Team? What team? I have a primary care physician who handles everything from soup to nuts, including my diabetes care. She'll refer me to specialists and labs as needed, but she doesn't have any direct correspondence with my ophthalmologist (for whose checkup I am long overdue), and I've never had a CDE or an endo.

I really cannot believe that the year is already coming to a close. When I look back, I feel so old...wondering where the time has gone and knowing that I'll never get it back. It seems like just yesterday I was enjoying the feel of the summer months with its easy going and warm nights. Now, 2009 is at its end and we're starting an entirely new decade. So where did 2009 go?

 

In January, I got my wisdom teeth removed and learned that letting go of my diabetes wasn't the end of the world. at least when into the hands of trusted doctors with type 1 themselves. Little did I know that having my wisdom teeth removed and undergoing that sedative would prepare me for what would come in November.

I'm not much of a talk radio person, but The Mr. and my dad are. And one of the main reasons I know about this guy is because of The Mr. and my dad.

 

There's a radio talk show host in St. Louis with the pseudonym Frank O. Pinion. At some point in his career he stopped earning a salary from the radio station from which he broadcasts. His earnings come completely from endorsements/advertisements that he reads on his show.

 

So my blunt question to you is this: Does this make him any less of a radio show host? Is Frank's credibility as a talk show host diminished in any way?

So far I'm not head over heels for my new pump, and I really thought I would be. Kinda pains me to say that.

 

I'm a creature of habit and often have trouble with change, so I know some of these things will simply take some getting used to.

 

The two main issues I have are that there are a lot of extra steps when it comes to bolusing, compared to the Medtronic pump. Also, the reservoir is much, much smaller than my Medtronic pump.

It has been one busy and hectic week. Adjusting to the new work schedule has still been rough, but throwing in the holidays made everything ten thousand times more rushed and stressful. I'm glad that it's all over for the time being.

 

I spent the last five days with my family which was pretty great. Since I moved, I don't get to see them nearly as often. And I had a lot built up that I wanted to talk over with my mom. And a need to see my cousin and brothers and get a million hugs. I am definitely family-oriented.

 

But now that I'm back in my little apartment, I can feel the weight lifting. I got so much accomplished last week, it doesn't seem real. I bought a new car...my very first that I'll be paying for completely. It's lovely and I'm overjoyed that I'm in a position to do that now. My mom and I prepped for Christmas in a matter of two days. Then we all did Christmas.

Last night, I participated in a DiabetesSisters' PODS meetup for the first time. I've seen them online and always wanted to join, but there hasn't been anything in my area and I'm not in a position to add anything to my plate right now. I noticed it on the list last week and spoke with the woman leading the group.

 

So I made the trek (it's about an hour's drive for me) to the meetup and enjoyed an hour and a half of diabetes related conversation (with a little life mixed in) with three other diabetic women. Three of us were type one and the other type two. Two other women are supposed to join next time (one of them being a friend of mine who I met at JDRF).

 

It was nice to just sit and talk about lows and highs and doctors and all that goes on. For DiabetesSisters, there are some "guidelines" supplied for these meetings. The facilitator goes through a training to even host the meeting.
