This story caught my eye.
A recycling company owner plead guilty in federal court in South Bend, Indiana, yesterday for selling defective test strips.
Bayer paid the recycling company $8,000 to dispose of the test strips, which were part of a 2007 recall. Dispose of the test strips he did; On the Internet. Well, he attempted to. I guess the eight grand wasn't enough. I'm not sure if any of the test strips were purchased before they were removed from the Internet, but think of the harm he could have caused. What a scumbag!
I don't know the avenue in which one takes to sell defective test strips on the Internet (shocking as that may be), but I might be a little leery if I came across Crazy Kenny's Recycling, Pool Cleaning and Test Strip Hut while on the Internet. Maybe I'm just naïve. Perhaps it's a much more sophisticated racket than that.

Today is Earth Day and having grown up in an environmentally responsible household, I consciously make green decisions throughout my day. Turning off lights here, not wasting water there, paper over plastic… any little thing that I know eventually adds up in a big way. A difficult part of deciding on a pump, however, was the green impact it carried along with it. The OmniPod was designed to be worn for three days and then hucked in the trash… really? (READ MORE)

Now that my diabetes is back under control again, I have plenty of time and energy to obsess over other things. Namely my beautiful little boy, who's 7 months old already, and making sure the world is safe for him and future generations. (Note: This has absolutely NOTHING to do with diabetes!)
It started around Earth Day. We "celebrated" the day like any other day. My husband put pesticides on the front lawn (die grubs! die!) and I carted home a dozen (doubled) disposable plastic bags of groceries, including a big bag of Pampers. I then proceeded to clean the house, using standard petroleum-based cleaners and paper towels.
Needless to say, we weren't a very green household.

I must admit -- with a bit of a blush -- that I'm very irresponsible when it comes to disposing of sharps and used pump supplies.
There was a time when I put every sharp in a medical waste container and The Mr. would dispose of it at the hospital for me. That was mostly pre-diabetes, though. That's when I was taking shots of blood thinners when I was pregnant.
For some reason, it became easier to drop the insulin needles in the bathroom trashcan than to find a sharps container. I frequently put "Get Sharps Container" on my to-do list, but it never got done. I never seemed as worried about the lancets, although I think they are still considered sharps.
In our new neighborhood, the city offers a free recycling program. And, get this, you don't have to sort anything! Just put all your recyclables in a big trashcan and the city picks it up once a week.

Wednesday I was stuck on nursery rhymes. Thursday, it was fairly tales. Reading the Wikipedia entry on Red Riding Hood, I followed the link to an entry on something I'd never heard of before: liminality. While Wikipedia has not nearly evolved into something rigorous enough to be considered a sole source for research, sometimes a new word or concept can shift something known and comfortable into an entirely different perspective; this is what that definition did for me.

After a full week, my kids have finally emerged from their swine caves and have re-entered society, going back to school today.
My germaphobic wife’s biggest fear in the world (aside from a potential delay in the production of the latest Twilight series movie – New Moon) was getting swine flu. She made this startling comment while shivering on the couch last week.
"I better have the swine flu."
To think that this was just a precursor to something worse was unimaginable.

I have been incredibly busy this week. I finally finished cleaning my apartment. I've packed two suitcases full of winter clothes and pictures to take back home...to help with the moving process in May. Plus I've been focusing on school: a yoga final, a 15 page paper, editing two papers for classmates, and trying to actually GET to class for once.
Between it all, I haven't had much time for the rest of my life. My post on "Balance" really hit home as my week is coming to a close. My bags are ready to be loaded tomorrow morning so I can spend the day unpacking them and visiting my mom (who I won't see again until we leave for Europe in mid May). There are multiple piles of things that need to go to the recycling center. And my school books are looming in a pile on the coffee table.
So where is diabetes in this hectic day? Right smack dab in the middle, that's where.

Even though my degree is pending the successful completion of three finals, my mind is in "end" mode. I'm tying up all the loose ends and summing the last three and a half years up. A lot of that has to do with the whole packing and moving process, because honestly, the end of this school semester feels no different than any other. It's still school and finals and grades.
But packing my apartment sets my mind into organization mode. Which means I shift easily into "end" mode. I've barely made a dint (except with my clothes) in my apartment. Mostly because I've run out of boxes and I'm awaiting more this week from my mom's work. Nonetheless, it feels good to pack and organize.
