Last week I wrote about my experience with my new endo. Today marks a week from that first visit and the day I am supposed to fax over a weeks worth of BG readings and boluses from my pump.

1. Charlie was sitting on the toilet crying the other day because his dry, chapped knuckle was bleeding slightly. "Charlie, you see blood all the time when we test your sugar," I reminded him. "Yeah, but not from my hand," his sobs growing larger. "Blood is supposed to come from my fingers not my hand!" Damn this disease for making my 5-year-old say that blood is supposed to come from his fingers.
2. Speaking of testing, baby Ben copies everything his big brother Charlie does. These days it's not uncommon to see Ben standing in "the spot" - the area of the kitchen where we usually test Charlie. Ben stands there reaching his little hand up on the counter, sticking his finger out, saying, "pweeeeze." (READ MORE)

**I hate that almost every holiday has turned into a candy holiday. For several years now I have drastically cut down on the amount of candy I give the kids for Easter (along with other holidays). This year, I went shopping for presents and Easter basket goodies on Saturday, which depending on how you think about it was either a great idea or a terrible idea. There were not many choices left in the candy aisle, and about 20 of us standing around looking at reject candy. Being limited, though, was great. Each kid got about six of those tiny chocolate eggs, and about six plastic eggs that had a handful of Skittles or jelly beans in them. I was pretty proud of that. And then on Easter we went to a friend's house. There was an egg hunt. And Uh. Mah. Gawd. did they make out with some serious loot. I emptied all the eggs last night into our community stash of candy where we have Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's Day leftovers. The bucket is overflowing now. Grrr. (READ MORE)

Well, as I expected, raising Olivia's basal rates sent her plummeting into some nasty lows. I've put her rates back to where they were (thank goodness for different basal settings - I don't have to re-program the pump). She couldn't get out of the 60s today. She felt lousy and spent a good portion of the morning guzzling juice.
I can't figure this out. It's so frustrating. She's not sneaking food. She's not eating more than usual - at least, not since Christmas day - but her numbers were astronomical and took a couple of days of increased basals to get down. She doesn't have her period, although that's another bone of contention - she never tells me when she gets it and unless I happen to notice...stuff...it doesn't get recorded in her log. Very frustrating.
I hate this stupid disease. It frustrates me on so many levels and I don't handle frustration very well.

I am a need-to-know person. You could call it curious or nosey. I'm an information junkie. All of which could explain my profession.
If I have high or low blood sugar, I want to know why. I want to know the reason behind it so I can adjust accordingly.
So, when I experienced nearly a week of pretty elevated blood sugars, I assumed it was due to my new infusion site. I have been trying (apparently unsuccessfully) to move my sites outward from the middle of my lower abdomen. After the first branch out recently, I tried to give the site some time to settle in. But after several days, I knew it was a lost cause. So I changed the site early and despite my desire to go back to where I knew I'd get good numbers, I moved outward again. Still, I got several days of unacceptable numbers.

"We can’t have him beeping all day in class," I said.
It’s like I’m Anakin Skywalker sending R2D2 to his first day of android school.
"Yeah," Maeve mumbled, her mouth full of Cheerios.
"It would be distracting to everyone in the class."
I fumbled with Charlie’s pump settings, trying to figure out how to turn off the beeping from the low reservoir. I never could figure it out, though I did get it to vibrate momentarily.
"Ooh," Charlie said.
"Do that again."
Did I mention there’s a kid with type 1 who just entered kindergarten at the school?

Tonight we're meeting friends for dinner and a show at the Tin Angel in Philadelphia. Fantastic place to see live music if you ever have the opportunity. We're seeing a band called the Trashcan Sinatras, which you may have heard of if a.) You listened to alternative/college radio in the early 90s or b.) You're from Scotland. A great band.
I do hope we make it there. We can certainly use it. These rare night outs have a tendency to fall apart at the eleventh hour for one reason or another unfortunately. Charlie's recent trend of unexplained high blood sugars has us wondering if a virus is lurking within him, only to be revealed as we're walking out the door with keys in hand.
Susanne has changed his infusion site two times in the last two days to see if that was the source of the highs. Alas, no. The highs are coming no matter what.
We're both pretty frustrated.

It has been a week of disgustingly high blood sugars for no apparent reason. It started on Monday night when I woke up twice and tested over 600 mg/dL at 3 a.m.
I have done everything I can possibly think of to keep my sugar in check: changed my site, drowned myself in water, taken an injection, cut out snacks, barely eat carbs. There have been a handful of blood sugar checks that were normal and that caused me to jump for joy. Which also lead me to believe my site is not the issue, nor is my diet, nor that I'm not bolusing correctly.
The only thing I haven't done is to either set a temporary basal rate, change my basal rate and/or call my endo to see what the heck I can do.

I blogged once last month. Sheesh. That's the least amount I've ever blogged since being with dLife.
Frankly, I'm not sure what the issue was. I know I was a little busy with the holidays, but nothing all that out of the ordinary. Actually, I think it was a mental thing. I sat around many nights thinking of wonderful things to write about, but chose fairly mindless tasks like teaching myself to crochet baby hats. Yes, it was mindless; I found the easiest patterns and watched a video and pretty much memorized what to do. I can now crank out a baby beanie in a matter of hours.

Oh, Lourdes
Charlie wants to set out on a pilgrimage to the town of Lourdes in France. We recently watched a news show about Lourdes. Millions of people visit the small town each year to bathe in and drink the spring water that is said to be a miracle cure. Charlie’s eyes lit up. He dropped his iPod into his lap, inched closer to the television and turned his head to me. “Can we go???”
