I've been a very good girl this year and my wants are few. But, Santa, you know my fondness for things that go beep, bing and buzz, the little frisson of excitement I get at the thought of an LCD or a digital readout. With that in mind, here are a few diabetes-related gadgets I would love to have under the tree this year:

A Salter Travel Scale. It's a snip at $30 and sure would come in handy when we're out and about. And it would slip into my pocketbook quite easily. And it's really freakin' cool.

Yesterday I received a package from Medtronic Minimed who is the manufacturer of my insulin pump. Minimed offers these sweet Pump Skins that are basically stickers that fit around your pump to give it some "style" and "personalization." (READ MORE)

Or; People Aren't As Bad As I Sometimes Think They Are.

My Dear Santa letter the other day was my usual somewhat sarcastic offering, something I tossed off as I was perusing the Salter scale website and lusting after that sweet, sex-ay model they have. I threw in the other two items to make up a list.

Someone on the TuDiabetes site saw it, though, and asked if she could buy the pump skins for Olivia. I was slightly embarrassed, hoping that no one mistook my usual snark-fest as actual requests for gifts. When she assured me that was not the case, that she just wanted to do something nice because "it's hard enough being a teenager with diabetes," I said yes.

The skins arrived today and Olivia wasted no time in having me apply one of them. The tie dyed one. It was, in her words "Sweet!" Which made me laugh.

It was a very nice early Christmas present. And she will be sending off a thank you email tonight.

Will there be a pair of white diabetic tube socks in your stocking this year? Zebra-patterned pump skins? Beaded alert bracelets? Sugar-free treats? A T-shirt that says, "I'm So Sweet I Need Insulin?"
I'm curious about your thoughts on giving diabetes-related holiday gifts to your favorite diabetic. Sorry, person with diabetes. I'm not so sure how I feel about it. I did consider getting a lightning bolt pump skin for Charlie for his stocking, but the more I thought about it, the ickier it felt.
"Diabetes gift" seems like an oxymoron to me. I think I'd prefer to separate the disease from Christmas as much as possible. Sure, he'd probably like a pump skin, but how about instead of a gift we just call it a supply. And instead of Christmas, we just give it to him on a Thursday. (READ MORE)

I need to get Olivia a new Medic Alert bracelet. Hers broke a while back and I've jury-rigged it together, but it continues to fall off. I had her leave it at home while she was at camp.
I hear from a lot of people who don't like the bog standard Medic Alert bracelets. They're too plain, too boring, not enough like jewelry. Isn't that the point, though? Shouldn't a Medic Alert stand out so that the paramedics can see it if something happens? That's the whole point of them, no?
I know there are a lot of pretty/cute/funky medical bracelets. There are beaded ones, plastic ones and sports bracelets. I've never had one of those for Olivia. Maybe because she was diagnosed so young and never had a choice in the matter, but she's always had the boring old stainless steel bracelet. She's never put up much of a fuss over it and I've never given her the option of getting anything different. (READ MORE)

Have you seen the new Animas pink pump? Oh man, Olivia saw that on the Children With Diabetes website and just about lost her mind. "MUM!!! LOOOOOOOK!!!! A pink pump!!! When is my warranty up with MiniMed?"

Kudos to Animas for appealing to the girly-girl market. Even though Olivia's not particularly girly, it seems that as soon as she turned 13, pink was in. Although, looking at the fine print on the site, it's a limited edition. O's pump warranty isn't up for another year, so she probably will not be getting that. Bummer. Hopefully this is a trend that continues, though, with all the pump companies. If you have to be attached to a machine, it might as well be a machine that looks cool.

Free Balls

At least with lows, you can get a heads up when your child comes to you and says, "I think I’m low." It’s a quick fix. At my 4-year-old’s first soccer practice on Sunday, the coach asked the group how many balls are used in a soccer game. Ben popped up like a Ben-in-the-Box and shouted out the answer triumphantly, adjusting his fingers accordingly to support his response.

"Freeeeeeeee!!!! (3)"

How’s that for the son of a soccer player.

Meanwhile, Charlie sat quietly behind one of the goals. Maybe too quiet. Maybe we should have been intuitive enough to know that he was sitting there very high and possibly had been for a few hours. It makes me sick knowing it after the fact. Continuous glucose monitoring is entering our conversations more and more these days.
