Prior to the birth of my son, I'd never been in the hospital before. I know the nurses have experience treating diabetes, but I was still worried about how my blood sugar would be managed.
Every diabetic reacts differently to the same situations. And living with the disease day in and day out for a few years-and managing to keep my a1c under 6 the whole time-really makes me an expert in what works for me and what doesn't.
What doesn't work for me is white flour, white rice, white potatoes, sugar or corn syrup. What does work is lean protein, healthy fats, whole grains, vegetables and fresh fruit, and, most importantly, food combining. (READ MORE)

How can you tell when you've tried too many different diets? When you can't keep the rules of them straight any more. This month, I'm following the Atkins diet. I'm doing it because my doctor took me off meds and I know from experience (and trial and error) that I cannot keep my blood sugar in healthy ranges without meds if I eat any carbohydrates. It isn't right, it isn't fair and there isn't anything I can do about it.
So Atkins it is this month. I started out the year on Weight Watchers. I've always considered Weight Watchers to be one of the healthiest, sanest, most practical diets. Unfortunately, it wasn't working for me this time around. The leaders keep saying the Core plan is great for people with diabetes, but I couldn't lose weight on it. Besides, I was eating mostly whole grains, fresh veggies and lean proteins. I think my portions sizes were too large. I did better counting points, but still that was a struggle to keep my blood sugar in line. (READ MORE)

I may be a little full of myself, but last week I looked up the requirements to become a diabetes educator. Sitting with my coworker earlier this month and comparing war stories about our diabetes and the intermittent calls from my mom or my aunt about the best ways to manage my nearly 91-year-old grandmother's type 2 diabetes really give me a thrill. Maybe that sounds kind of kookie, but I suppose I have simple pleasures.
So, anyway, I'm not becoming a diabetes educator, mainly because I'd need to become a registered nurse (I think) and, frankly, that's not something I want to do. I was a little disappointed, though, reading the list of requirements and realizing that this was something that was out of reach for me. (READ MORE)

I am up 1 pound from a month ago. I've been up as high as 3 pounds and as low as 2 pounds down. Truth be told, it's more like 6 weeks I have been doing this yo-yo trick up and down that 5 pound range.
I've been fairly good about logging my food. The days that the log stops at lunch are the problem. The afternoon snack attacks are sabotaging my efforts. I feel helpless to stop them. It's really detrimental to be feeling this way. (READ MORE)

I was discussing diet with a friend of mine last weekend. We were talking about her mother, who is borderline type 2. I asked if her mother was watching her carbs and she said yes, that her mother had cut out almost all carbohydrates, but her blood sugars were still fluctuating all over the place.

When I asked what she was eating, my friend responded with "Chicken, fish, lots of fruit and yoghurt." I just kind of goggled at her. "Fruit? And yoghurt? Those have carbs in them, you know."

In my nutrition class, an entire chapter is devoted to carbohydrates. Dreadful, but life-sustaining carbohydrates. Of course, the class goes into much greater detail than the familiarity that I have with carbs, but I still feel knowledgeable in the area.

 

 

One piece of information did strike me as very interesting and a little concerning. Someone (I believe the government) recommended that everyone consume at least 130 grams of carbohydrates per day in order to merely give the brain enough energy to survive. Apparently, 45% to 65% of my daily caloric intake should be from carbohydrates.

I have been exhausted lately. More than my usual fatigue. I constantly feel like curling into bed and sleeping for ages. I can't get out of bed in the morning. I'm just so persistently tired.

 

I'm sleeping enough each night and I'm trying to maintain a regular schedule. I'm getting my blood sugars down (my average has dropped over 10 points in the past weeks!). I'm trying to take it easy as much as possible.

 

But I can't seem to shake the heavy eyelids and drained thoughts for longer than a few hours at a time. So I went back to the drawing board again trying to figure out what I could change or add to give myself some more energy. And I decided on more protein.

As a diabetic, blood sugars aren't the only numbers that I have to deal with on a regular basis. There are cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, protein and potassium levels, and all sorts of other issues that pertain to the "hardest hit" organs in my body. So every doctor that I go to makes sure to keep track of this multitude of lab tests.

 

My most recent doctor's appointment (not with an endo but with the hormonal specialist that I see for my other conditions) included this plethora of lab tests. So when the results came in last week, I made sure to compare last year's tests with this year's. I wanted to see how my body was reacting to the supplements I take, prescriptions I'm on, and routines that I do.
