A mere month after my post on "Exercise, exercise, exercise" I can proudly state I finally started! I have walked at least 15 minutes 3 times in the past week! Woooo-Hoooo!
It doesn't seem like a worthy accomplishment when I read that sentence, as a matter of fact, it's somewhat pitiful. BUT I'm not going to go there! I will NOT insult any progress I make, no matter how little. I think this is a trap a lot of people fall into, certainly I do. If it's not 1 hour a day of pouring sweat, then it's not worth mentioning. And I bet the people who do that much exercise probably just beat themselves up over the 1 day they were too sick or tired to complete their workout.
Instead, I will focus on the fact that I am 100 times better off than all the weeks I did no intentional exercise or the weeks I did just 1 or 2 days. Yay me! (READ MORE)

This morning, I went for a second opinion on my current reproductive status. Back in late August, my Well Woman Exam turned into a possible endometriosis diagnosis. So I decided to go for another opinion before pursuing further treatment options.
And I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the doctor. New doctors are always interesting, especially those related to gynecology. But this doctor reinforced the idea that doctors can actually be helpful, understanding, and interested in what you actually feel or need.
So his opinion was that endometriosis is the likely choice as to the causes of some of my reproductive issues. Since I've tried most of the obvious treatment choices (NSAIDs, birth control pills, and pain management), the next step for a woman my age is surgery.

5 out of 7 days! That's right - I exercised 5 out of 7 days last week! Wooooo-Hooooo - yay me! Ok, so it's overboard but I need to congratulate myself a lot for it to have any affect. I have what's called an external locus of control for motivation (take a quiz on yours here) - in other words if you tell me 'good job' it means much more to me than if I say it to myself.
Exercise does make a huge difference in my sugar levels, my fasting level today was 88!
I have been using stars on our kitchen calendar as motivation. Yes, the little star stickers that teachers use. Blue stars for 15 minutes or more, silver for 30 minutes and above and the elusive gold star for an hour. Sounds silly and I felt silly about it until I started getting a glow seeing the stars stack up on the September page. We all have to find what works to motivate and reward ourselves. (READ MORE)

I put the deposit down on the more expensive apartment that I found. When I left the office today, I had a horrible feeling in the pit of stomach. Something wasn't sitting well. Was it the amount of money that I was locking into? The location? Just because I'm in love with another complex? Or simply because I'm just not ready to move?
I honestly can't say, but I stopped by the complex that I'm in love with to pick up my deposit (left in case anything came through which it did not). After the ordeal that I'd had, everyone knows who I am in the office and knows the whole situation. After all, I did cry in the community manager's office.
The guy I worked with previously explained to me that he didn't lease the other apartment out and apologized for the whole thing. It was nice to hear on so many levels. It also felt like a release. I wasn't angry at him. I was just ready to move forward.

I'm six weeks into my Accutane treatment. My first month I had a 45% improvement from my starting point. The second month seems about the same, but we'll see in the next two weeks. I've had quite a few side effects. Dry lips being the worst. I'm only recently starting to experience extensive dry skin, leaving me with tiny red rashes much like eczema. I've had back pain, some joint pain, and a few headaches.
The worst side effect has been the effect it had on my blood sugars...forcing me to raise my Lantus and lower my insulin to carb ratios due to intense insulin resistance. Luckily, I've managed to get that into much better control. And I'm looking forward to it resolving once I'm done with this treatment.

I had my second appointment with my endo today. The first was back in late June when my A1c wasn't anywhere close to where I'd like it (clocking in at 9.1%). Today's appointment went well and I'll know my latest A1c in a few days. The doctor feels like it should be down and to keep trying to do what I'm doing with a little extra help.
She is the kind of doctor who offers advice if needed, but ultimately understands that diabetes is a very individual disease and my management may be different than others. She does not seem to be concerned with higher A1cs, which is a little troubling as I know the best A1c is certainly not in the 8 or 9% range for a 20-something year old.

I've had quite a few decent numbers since I've started the whole Lantus switch from the pump. Wednesday was a bit rocky, as well as the first part of Thursday. But by two PM on Thursday, I was seeing stable levels close to range. It hasn't been completely stable or all that easy, but it's been comforting to already see numbers like 120 pop up on the meter screen.
Getting the night numbers to cooperate has been a bit challenging. For Friday morning, I woke up at 171 after 16 units of Lantus the night before. But Saturday morning, I woke up at 66 after 16 units of Lantus the previous night. Last night, I did 17 units of Lantus at 10PM, dropped to 69 at 3AM, but woke up at a nice round 110. So obviously, I need tweaking.

My last endo appointment in May of this year brought lots of good news. An A1C of 6.0, a reduction in my total and bad cholesterol levels, kidney function excellent. Overall, I felt pretty good leaving the office. But there were issues to be addressed - aren't there always? First, although my cholesterol levels were reduced, they were still not where the doctor - and where I - would like to have them. Further, I'd gained 2lbs since my previous visit.
So, I set my mind to fixing these issues, while maintaining all of the good stuff that I'd managed to achieve and then I started making some changes. (READ MORE)

My Lantus has been at 32 units (down from 34 units) since Saturday. And of course, my averages have jumped back to the 200s. Despite continuing to do the same things as the previous week (yoga, Metformin, and all other standards), 32 units is now kicking my butt in the opposite direction.
At 34 units, I was dropping low constantly and without warning. I would be 40 or 50 with no symptoms or wake up in the middle of the night way beyond my comfort level. So I tried 33 units and I got the same issue but in the 60s and 70s. So I figured that 32 units might be the ticket.
Apparently not. So I'll be raising the Lantus back up to 33 units tonight after another intense yoga session. Hopefully that will even things out without going to one extreme or the other. My aim is for averages in the 160s without excessive lows. And some consistency.

"Is that what you're having for dinner?" my husband wanted to know.
I had prepared 1/2 lb. of lean hamburger with taco seasoning and put it on the dining room table with sour cream, sliced tomatoes, shredded cojack cheese and taco shells. The kids were eating, my husband was eating. After getting everyone settled, I stood in the kitchen and injected my dinner-time dose of Byetta and swallowed the Metformin.
After nearly a month, I was starting to feel the effects of Byetta. Namely, my appetite had dramatically decreased.
My husband looked shocked that I sat down at the table with half of a very small bag of baby carrots, a small dish of ranch dressing and a glass of water.
"Yes," I told him. "There's not that much taco meat and I'm not really that hungry anyway."
"You should have a taco," he pleaded. (READ MORE)
