My husband just switched jobs, which is always a headache when it comes to health insurance. If you are lucky enough to be allowed to start right away, with no waiting period, there's still that period of limbo when the old insurance has been cancelled (and man, they don't waste any time doing that) and when your new insurance is in the system.

Of course, Olivia needed insulin while we were in limbo. I went to CVS to pick it up and it was going to cost $335.99 for three bottles of insulin. Needless to say, we can't afford that.

There are a lot of things in this world that I don't understand and don't choose to understand. Politics is one of them. I despise politics. I don't do office politics, I don't play games with people, I feel like I'm a straight-shoting tell-it-like-it-is kind of person. So, I really don't like politics. Which means I don't pay attention to bills and votes and all that nonsense. I should, I've tried, but I don't.

I do know enough to know that the passage of the health-care reform bill today and the fact that it's being sent to President Obama's desk to be signed in to law (which it will) is a big deal.

To the families of special-needs children all across the country, I have a message: For years, you sought to make America a more welcoming place for your sons and daughters.

I pledge to you that if we are elected, you will have a friend and advocate in the White House.

Gov. Palin, I can't tell you how much this means to me and my family. For eight long years it felt as if we didn't have a friend in the White House. Phew! Thank you for being my friend. What a relief. I have to be honest, I wasn't expecting that. I too am a parent of a special-needs child. My 6-year-old son Charlie has been living with type 1 diabetes since he was a baby. 

As my friend, I'm sure you and Senator McCain will lift the restrictions on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research the moment you take office. That's what friends do, right? Friends are there for you when you need them most.

I'm a little torn on how to react to President Obama's nomination of Sonia Sotomayer. And this torn-ness is based only on the diabetes issue.

Part of me thinks: Way to go! This is awesome! I'm so happy that a high-profile person other than an athlete or actor is bringing light to diabetes and showing that we can indeed do anything and that diabetes is not an obstacle.

And part of me thinks: Why is this even a stinking issue? Ok, I know why it's an issue but why should Sotomayer -- or anyone for that matter -- be judged on whether or not they can perform a job simply because of diabetes?

It is for this reason that I chose to "hide" my diabetes during my last two job interviews. I wanted to be judged based on my qualifications and my sparkling personality not on whether I was capable of doing a job with diabetes.

What I really need is a good online diabetes-related battle. Nothing lights up the 'ole blog switchboard like a feud. I came across a rather heated one in the blogosphere recently. So lucky. All I ever get is nothing but stinkin' compassion and support. Anyone got a beef with me? Anyone? Come on, don't make me beg.

Type 2s? Come on, type 2s. When was the last time I addressed your concerns? How about like never. All I do is talk about my type 1 son. Booooring!

Type 1s? Come on, hit me!

I thought I had a real shot with the Sotomayor piece, but unfortunately most of those who commented, directed their anger not at me but instead at the fictional characters I created. Sigh.

This quote came from President Barack Obama's Inaugural Address on January 20, 2009. It is a bold statement on his desire to make improvements in todays healthcare system and expand on the successes of technology for everyone.

I don't think I've ever told you about our Pest Guy. To say he's creepy is an understatement, but nearly every time I see him I wind up with a story to tell.

If you want to keep the scorpions out of your house here, then you need to spray for crickets (because they're the main menu for scorpions, apparently) pretty frequently. So Pest Guy comes every other month. And in his defense, he knows what he's doing because when other pest guys from his office come we wind up with crickets.

Anyway. So Pest Guy usually comes on the weekends, but I screwed something up once and he wound up coming one day when I was working from home. So as he's doing his bug thing around the house I'm sitting at my desk doing editor/writer stuff and he asks what it is that I do.

"I'm an editor," I tell him.
