My husband just switched jobs, which is always a headache when it comes to health insurance. If you are lucky enough to be allowed to start right away, with no waiting period, there's still that period of limbo when the old insurance has been cancelled (and man, they don't waste any time doing that) and when your new insurance is in the system.
Of course, Olivia needed insulin while we were in limbo. I went to CVS to pick it up and it was going to cost $335.99 for three bottles of insulin. Needless to say, we can't afford that.

Like many in the diabetes community, my wife and I were pretty disturbed when we heard the premise of Hannah Montana's "No Sugar, Sugar" episode that was scheduled to air last night.
The episode tackles the issue of juvenile diabetes, but not as we know it to be. A major, recurring character on the show gets diabetes. Oliver, one of Miley's best friends, is ashamed at first and tries to hide his disease from his friends.

Terms like "sugar boy," written as a weak attempt to deploy canned laughter and delivered by young actors unaware of the potential damage it could cause, did not go over well with most of us.

I'm a little torn on how to react to President Obama's nomination of Sonia Sotomayer. And this torn-ness is based only on the diabetes issue.
Part of me thinks: Way to go! This is awesome! I'm so happy that a high-profile person other than an athlete or actor is bringing light to diabetes and showing that we can indeed do anything and that diabetes is not an obstacle.
And part of me thinks: Why is this even a stinking issue? Ok, I know why it's an issue but why should Sotomayer -- or anyone for that matter -- be judged on whether or not they can perform a job simply because of diabetes?
It is for this reason that I chose to "hide" my diabetes during my last two job interviews. I wanted to be judged based on my qualifications and my sparkling personality not on whether I was capable of doing a job with diabetes.

I don't think I've ever told you about our Pest Guy. To say he's creepy is an understatement, but nearly every time I see him I wind up with a story to tell.
If you want to keep the scorpions out of your house here, then you need to spray for crickets (because they're the main menu for scorpions, apparently) pretty frequently. So Pest Guy comes every other month. And in his defense, he knows what he's doing because when other pest guys from his office come we wind up with crickets.
Anyway. So Pest Guy usually comes on the weekends, but I screwed something up once and he wound up coming one day when I was working from home. So as he's doing his bug thing around the house I'm sitting at my desk doing editor/writer stuff and he asks what it is that I do.
"I'm an editor," I tell him.

While I posted yesterday that Nick Jonas was in New York Sunday for the Diabetes Research Institute's Carnival for a Cure, I didn't mention much about the event itself. Billed as "New York City's largest indoor carnival," the event was a cross between a street fair and an arcade, aimed largely at the under-twelve crowd. Three walls of the Metropolitan Pavillion were lined with inflatable mazes, slides, and bounce rooms, and a human-powered "mechanical bull". Several street-fair games-of-skill, aimed again at the under-twelve set, occupied a block of canopies in the center of the room. Prize tickets were given to the winners, and by the end of the afternoon almost every family there was wrangling multiple shopping bags of toys. (READ MORE)

I always thought the townpeople were a bit overly aggressive and mob-like. Throw diabetes into the mix and they just become cruel bastards.

Last night I had a crazy dream. Nothing new, right? Well, this one actually makes sense. Yes, I can interpret it! Yes, I often analyze my dreams. And yes I more or less “listen” to what those dreams tell me.
They said when you have a dream that involves you being naked it means you’re insecure about something. The first naked dream I remember having was right around the time my grandfather died. In the dream I was naked and put on my grandfather’s robe to cover myself up. It makes sense: I felt scared/insecure about my grandfather dying and found something of his to comfort me.
