After reading through and really thinking about all of the comments on my "Carbs vs Points" post I have decided that starting next week, I am going to begin the Weight Watchers Core Plan.
For those who are not familiar with the Core Plan, it's different than the Points plan or Flex plan as they call it. The Core plan has a list of foods that you can eat. You are only to eat from those foods and only eat until satisfied. I am going to do it on a 2 week basis and see how it goes.
So far I have lost 40 pounds using the Flex Plan which is the one with the Points so I have had some success. The problem is my BG and my need for change. I will do some major shopping this weekend to prepare myself for next week but I am actually looking forward to it. (READ MORE)

After an emotional breakdown Monday night and multiple vent emails to close friends, I'm feeling more prepared to deal with everything that's going on with my health right now. I've done some research, reviewed information that I already knew, and taken some alone time. And I've come up with a plan:
My first step is to get my focus back. I need to make it to class, no matter what. Excuses are unacceptable. My first round of exams starts next week, which I'm not prepared for at all. So this week, I need to get back on track with my schoolwork. Reading, writing, and making it to class.

Part 2 of a 4 part series. See part 1.
On the way to the hospital, my husband commented that he didn't think this was really it. I wasn't curled up in a ball crying or cursing him out. Nothing like what he had seen on TV or heard about from his friends. It couldn't be the real deal. I wanted to choke him, but he was right.
As soon as we got to the hospital, the contractions stopped.
My blood pressure, however, was another story. It started climbing and continued to climb throughout the morning. Since women with diabetes are more likely to develop pre-eclampsia, the doctor ordered a 24-hour urine collection to check for protein. That meant spending the night in the hospital for observation. I've put off starting Metformin for several months. I just don't want to risk the nausea and tummy troubles that so many people have on it. I hate being nauseous. It's the one sickness that I really don't do well with at all. Give me pain, but don't make my stomach hurt.
Each week is passing with highs that don't budge, injection after injection trying to compensate, weight gain, and the occasional hormone-related breakout. Some of that I know is my fault. But some is completely out of my control and most likely due to the insulin resistance that goes along with PCOS.
I'd love to have the kind of diabetes that stays steady and runs normal. Like my dad. He barely struggles with anything over 180. He doesn't even count carbs, although he does maintain a fairly strict low carb diet. But even when he splurges, he does not see numbers like I do. And I'm sick of that.

The last three weeks at Weight Watchers has opened my eyes up to an important fact.
The program works.
I know that sounds silly but hear me out. 4 weeks ago when I weighed in I was at 38 pounds lost. I was pretty excited about that and was looking forward to being past 40 pounds. Well, the two weeks following that weigh in were not good for me. In fact, I gained exactly .6 pounds each week. Since it was less then a pound I was not entirely upset but I was really hoping to get past that 40 pound mark. (READ MORE)

Fair warning: if you’re the teeniest bit squeemish or gross out easily don’t read this post because I will be talking about feet and the skin on feet and what happens when the skin on my feet gets dry.
So, I’m no stranger to dry feet. I’ve had them forever. Midwestern winters can do a number on tootsies and the constant lack of humidity in the desert can do the same. I know it’s a big diabetic no-no, but I prefer not to wear shoes. If I’m planning to walk on hot coals, I’ll wear shoes, but for the most part at home (and sometimes at my desk at the office) I choose to go shoeless.

They say if you want to hear God laugh, tell Him your plans. Well, my birth plan must have had Him in stitches.
After nine months of cramming for the "final exam," I had developed a good picture of what I wanted my son's birth to be like, and drew up a birth plan as instructed in Lamaze class. I knew flexibility was key, but I didn't realize it was the only thing I could count on.
The plan was to try to go as naturally as possible, with the option of pain meds if needed. I wanted mobility, a birthing ball, comfort techniques and the labor positions we had practiced for weeks. I wanted to let gravity do its job. (READ MORE)

I received a comment on my post from yesterday that really struck a chord with me. The reader commented that their parents had died from diabetes and that they would die from it too.
When I read that I got choked up because honestly, I feel the same way.
Sure I plan on fighting the fight and checking my blood as often as I am supposed to. Of course I will continue to work on my A1C and losing weight. I am not giving up on life at all. But, in the back of my mind I “know” that diabetes is going to win in the end.
Will it be heart disease, kidney failure, or a stroke? Maybe something else. Who knows?
The fact is that with all the steps I take to live healthy the odds are against me. Diabetes has the upper hand which makes me sad and angry at the same time.

Before Charlie went on the CGM, I had a major misconception of the pump calibration process. To me, it sounded very scientific and potentially disastrous if not done with exact precision. Then I learned it was actually quite easy. Not only that, it was fun. Kind of like a party. Reminds me of that 1980 classic by Kool & The Gang - Calibration.

I wonder if there is a better way. I have been using the same pharmacy for two years now and they have done a perfectly good job for me. But the rigmarole involved seems a bit much, even with all the modern conveniences involved. Every month before my Novolog and test strip stronghold runs out I go to the Longs Pharmacy website and plunk in my prescription numbers, store pick-up number, name, e-mail, phone number, and check a couple of boxes to get my online refill request sent off. Then a day or two later when I am sure they are ready for pick-up, I drive over to the pharmacy being actively aware of when they close because I inevitably need the Novolog by now, do the in-line wait, and fork over some money.
