Ever since I was diagnosed with diabetes, I have always wondered about how celebrities with diabetes are doing with their control. I remember the first celebrity I found out had diabetes was Halle Berry. When I realized this I guess I was a little "amazed". Looking back, I feel pretty stupid about being shocked that a CELEBRITY had what I had. For some reason, hearing that news was good news. I remember saying to myself, "Yes! That's GREAT!." I was so happy to see that EVEN DIABETICS COULD STILL BECOME FAMOUS! Maybe I am a little selfish, but don't we all want fame and fortune ;) (READ MORE)

Everyone needs to take a personal day every now and then. At least that's how I feel. Lately, It seems like I have been running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I have been putting in some long days of landscaping work, I just returned from a weekend trip to Omaha, and my girlfriend is in the process of getting a job back in her home state. And needless to say, all of the chaos and daily schedule changes have my blood sugars going a little crazy. (READ MORE)

With all the Hannah Montana and Halloween hullabaloo, I forgot to mention Charlie's last endo appointment. I actually like these appointments. It's a day off from work and a rare opportunity for Susanne and I to spend time with just Charlie. And there's always a hopeful thought that this time we'll get good A1c news.

 

Heading into Philadelphia on Route 95 we pass a factory on our left before the skyline comes into view with the sun reflecting brightly off of the Comcast Center building. I ask Charlie what he thinks the factory is making.

 

"I think it's a factory that makes other factories," he says.

Lately my control has been great. A month ago, I can honestly say that it wasn't. When I blogged about my last endocronologist appointment, my diabetes was in the driver's seat. I was getting a two thumbs down rating from the critics. Well, if you have been staying up with my entries, you know that as of lately my schedule has changed drastically. My new daily routine is making a HUGE DIFFERENCE with my sugars (This is the part where I attempt to sound smart and provide you with some advice that you are probably already know.) I just want to say to you, if you are a diabetic, or know someone who is, and if you currently have an irregular daily schedule(like me when I was personal training with random hours), then I can tell you that you will GREATLY benefit from getting on a day-to-day routine. Last week I posted about my Insurance company giving me a scare about approving my insulin pump supplies.
Well, using a Minimed insulin pump in Southern California has its advantages since their products are shipped out of Northridge which is about 30 minutes from my house. Almost in my backyard! So my order which was sent via UPS 3-day select arrived at the Simmons house the very next day!
This made my stress level drop tremendously which we all know is good for the diabetes.
So that covers the first part of this post title. Now to the blogging.
I mentioned this insurance situation on my personal blog, where I often rant about my ups and downs with diabetes, and the coolest thing happened. (READ MORE)

Yesterday was just a crappy day in general. I think my brain was just working overtime which is never good for me. I try to keep the depression that comes with having diabetes at bay but sometimes it is overwhelming. Sometimes it seems nothing will get me out of it.
I have found the best way for me to get this junk out is to get it out literally literally! I write my blog here at dLife and my personal blog. I share the good times and bad. So many times I have thought, "no one wants to hear about my cruddy day" but whenever I have, someone else has commented on how they too feel that way now and then. (READ MORE)

The results from my first week on the Core Plan at Weight Watchers proved positive. I lost a little. I thought I would lose more. I expected I would. But I still lost so that is good.
I posted about the differences between the Flex and Core plan on my personal blog today.
One of the big differences about the Flex plan (one with the Points) and the Core plan is that you eat until you are satisfied. This, my dear readers, may be the reason for not losing at least a flipping pound this week.
Satisfied? How do I figure that out? I always ate until I was full or finished my plate and that was it. That is the way I was raised. “Are you full?” That was always the question when I would announce being “done” with dinner.
But being satisfied is a totally different thing. (READ MORE)

Each Saturday morning I head over to our local Weight Watchers office to weigh in and attend the meetings. The week was not good for yours truly. I gained and of course was not happy but what made it worse was my attitude all week and frankly for the last several weeks.
I am tired of counting. I feel like the Count on Sesame Street. "9! AH AH AH. 9 Points! AH AH AH! And 27 CARBS! AH AH AH!" (READ MORE)

After reading through and really thinking about all of the comments on my "Carbs vs Points" post I have decided that starting next week, I am going to begin the Weight Watchers Core Plan.
For those who are not familiar with the Core Plan, it's different than the Points plan or Flex plan as they call it. The Core plan has a list of foods that you can eat. You are only to eat from those foods and only eat until satisfied. I am going to do it on a 2 week basis and see how it goes.
So far I have lost 40 pounds using the Flex Plan which is the one with the Points so I have had some success. The problem is my BG and my need for change. I will do some major shopping this weekend to prepare myself for next week but I am actually looking forward to it. (READ MORE)
