I think I’ve mentioned fairly recently that one of my new favorite quotes is this:

A career is a journey of preparation, opportunity and passion. POP. To make your career POP, focus on your passion and preparation.

Over the last roughly 10 days I’ve done a lot of preparation for one photo shoot. More preparation than I’ve done for any other shoot I’ve had. I scoured Flickr for posing ideas, I watched countless videos of behind the scenes looks at newborn shoots. I visualized. Yes, visualized – much like an elite athlete would – what I would do when. I constantly said to myself “I can do this.” And I prayed.

Singers are very passionate people and a lot of times the power behind their voices comes from the struggles that they have encountered in life. This was definitely the way I felt as I watched Elliott Yamin put on a passionate and heart-felt show here in Columbia Tuesday night. (READ MORE)

Following through on my one and only new year's resolution, I am writing about each of the topics bold and underlined in my first post of 2009

The title of that post came from something my father has said to me only two times in my life.  "Just where the hell have you been, young lady??"

The first time, I was hanging out in the woods with friends and smoking a cigarette.  A stupid move that would be repeated several times during my pre-teen and teen years.  And the smoking a cigarette part of the stupid move would be repeated again and again in my late teens and early twenties.

To sum up Charlie's recent doctor's visit in which we greatly anticipated an improved A1c result, the words of two great American female poets come to mind.
"First, when there's nothing but a slow glowing dream That your fear seems to hide deep inside your mind All alone I have cried silent tears full of pride In a world made of steel, made of stone
What a feeling, bein's believin' I can't have it all, now I'm dancin' for my life Take your passion, and make it happen Pictures come alive, you can dance right through your life" - Irene Cara

And of course ,.
"Whoa, maybe he's no romeo But he's my lovin one-man show Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa Let's hear it for the boy" - Deniece Williams
Incidentally, I honestly always thought the Irene Cara lyric was "take your pants off and make it happen" rather than "take your passion and make it happen." Very risqué and quite unlikely even for the mid-80s, but that's just how I heard it. (READ MORE)

Kerri has encouraged us to write about something other than diabetes, which is great advice really because our lives are not governed by diabetes. So, that's what I'm going to do: write about something other than diabetes. And I'm not even going to try to make it relate to diabetes.

I remember finding writing when I was in sixth grade. It's been a part of me in one way or another for a very long time. I found photography almost by accident. I remember needing to find an elective class in high school and the bug has been with me ever since.

Photography is my second passion. And I've thought occasionally that maybe a person can't have more than one passion, but I know that's not true.

I'm a quote collector. I used to go through the yearbooks in high school and write down most of the senior quotes into a three-ring binder that I would look at periodically. I also have at least one book about famous quotes. I have several inspirational quotes Post-It-noted to my computer monitor: Continue to push yourself until there is a decent possibility you might fail. Write like you're already famous. If you plant peaches you will get peaches; karma works this way.

One of my new favorite quotes came from a column that I recently edited: A career is a journey of preparation, opportunity and passion. POP. To make your career POP, focus on your passion and preparation. It reminds me of another quote I like: ...where sweat meets fate.

When I was fresh out of college and looking for my first job as a reporter I would send off cover letters that started like this: The most important thing you need to know about me is that I love to write. I thrive on it!

OK, so sometimes I still introduce myself like that. *blush* But seriously, I can't remember a time when I didn't identify myself as a writer. Can't remember a time when I didn't read published authors with awe and envy. Can't remember a time when I didn't want to be a better writer.

I've worked hard to get where I am. As a writer and editor. And I'm proud of that. And I still thrive on writing. I have a list of blog posts that I want to write up, and can still think of the plots of the two short stories I have had brewing for years.

In my recent post "My 25," number 13 remarked "I'm not so sure that I'd want to sacrifice what I've gained from it [diabetes]." After some interesting perspectives in the last few weeks about diabetes, I've found myself truly wondering...would I do it?

The question is...would I sacrifice everything that diabetes has given me to be without it? Do I honestly hate diabetes enough to throw away every diabetes by-product in my life? My honest answer is no.

Do I desperately want a cure? Yes! Do I constantly fight for one? Yes! Am I willing to do whatever possible now to make sure that I can live some PART of my life without diabetes? Yes!

I'm sure I would have had a huge goofy smile on my face watching Charlie play baseball even if he was free of disease. But something about watching the kid with diabetes out-hustle every other kid on the field, just made my heart burst wide open with pride.
He wasn't the fastest. He didn't hit the ball the furthest. He didn't throw the hardest. But sweet lord, that little firecracker played with passion.
Planted on the pitcher's mound, he became an instant fan favorite by throwing his body in front of sharply hit line drives destined for the deep edges of the outfield. The parents and coaches laughed as he looked like a hockey goalie under assault, flopping around on the ground, making save after save.
Before practice, I wondered what to do with the pump. (READ MORE)

Wow, what a storm that was started recently on my co-bloggers page. I have the utmost respect for you Michelle and your passion, writing ability, your life and even your disgust with diabetes when you wrote that blog. Please know this. I HAVE WRITTEN these types in the past too (when I was off). But you, and all the people that commented on your blog who, too, agree’d with your sentiment of “hating diabetes”, could not have proved a point with any clearer of an example of how out of touch we get with ourselves and life from time to time. This is ok, this is normal. It happens. But what you do with it when your faced with it, is what makes the difference and what can take you from a life of peace, or heaven, and true existence - to a place of hell, or unbalance, or non-peace.
