A pilot in Denton, Texas, made an emergency landing near a freeway yesterday because he felt lightheaded. Only one media source stated he was diabetic. Yet the article made every major newspaper in the area.

 

Thursday, I drove down the highway in rush hour traffic digging through my bag and eating everything I had with me. As I stuffed the glucose tabs into my mouth, I sat wondering about my fellow drivers. Were any of them diabetic? Had they driven this low before? Would they be mad because I was driving low (granted we didn't reach speeds above 15 mph)?

I need to get Olivia a new Medic Alert bracelet. Hers broke a while back and I've jury-rigged it together, but it continues to fall off. I had her leave it at home while she was at camp.
I hear from a lot of people who don't like the bog standard Medic Alert bracelets. They're too plain, too boring, not enough like jewelry. Isn't that the point, though? Shouldn't a Medic Alert stand out so that the paramedics can see it if something happens? That's the whole point of them, no?
I know there are a lot of pretty/cute/funky medical bracelets. There are beaded ones, plastic ones and sports bracelets. I've never had one of those for Olivia. Maybe because she was diagnosed so young and never had a choice in the matter, but she's always had the boring old stainless steel bracelet. She's never put up much of a fuss over it and I've never given her the option of getting anything different. (READ MORE)

I wanted to recognize someone who deserves credit for the amazing thing they did. This person (we'll call him Joe) performed an incredible task without even considering the consequences. Unfortunately, not many people realize the extent of Joe's actions. They carry on with their daily lives and never think twice about what Joe did. But for me, Joe is a hero. (READ MORE)

Well, it is official. The inhaled insulin Exubera is being pulled from the market by Pfizer. An ADA article reports that Pfizer took a $2.8 Billion hit to end its involvement with the sale of the drug. Doctoral and patient support, as well as profits, has been too dismal to warrant any kind of extended sale of what was seen as a breakthrough in diabetes management by many. (READ MORE)

Lately, I've been out of sync.  Off kilter.  In a rut.

 

I'm not making it to the gym as often as I should.  My meter average has crept from the low 100s to 158 mg/dl in the past couple of months.  I am ignoring the lunches I pack and and either not eating at all or eating whatever crap is available in the office lunchroom. 

 

I'm not sure exactly how it happens, this out of sorts business.  But it feels like every so often, I go right off the rails without even realizing it's happening.  One day, I think maybe I've got a handle on diabetes, weight, work, life.  And in an instant, it changes.

This weekend, my wife and I attended a wedding for one of her cousins.
I am not sure what it is but I dread attending weddings. It is like going to the dentist or having to file my taxes. I know I have to go but I really REALLY don't want to.
Unlike the other two examples, I usually leave a wedding having had a good time. This wedding was no exception.
I am not really into all the flowery stuff and decorations but I must say, it was one of the nicest weddings I have ever been to as far as their decor. I know guys, it is not the manly thing to point out but that is what was amazing! It really was nice.
The bride's bouquet was made up of what looked like 5 dozen roses which looked really cool and the centerpieces at the tables we really classy looking. It made me feel bad for not being as "into" all this stuff when we got married but oh well. Maybe that stuff comes with age. (READ MORE)

Perusing web sites in search of a really awesome medical ID bracelet, I started to really wonder how effective these things were. I wanted something noticable to the folks who needed to see it, but barely there for those who didn't. Much to my delight, I found charms that you could attach to a bracelet. But still I wondered if the right people would see it.
So I quizzed a friend of mine who is an EMT at our local hospital about whether or not I needed to bother getting a fancy--or not so fancy--medical ID bracelet. She gave me one of those "Do you really need me to answer that question?" looks.
"No, we won't notice the charms," she said. "Or likely the necklaces or even bracelets."
"Well, it's a great comfort to know that if I'm involved in an accident and unconscious and can't discuss my diabetes that I'll be well taken care of by the paramedics WHO WON'T EVEN KNOW MY MEDICAL CONDITION!" I ranted sarcastically. (READ MORE)

While my primary cycling fandom allegiance is to Team Type 1, since our household worships at the shrine of La Grande Boucle, you'll often find me streaming the day's race video on my computer, or when Versus or Universal Sports covers it, on the TV.
