Stay.

Don't move.

Don't change.

Do nothing different.

Retrace yesterday's steps.

Put on the same jeans.

Exert the same amount of energy.

Count out exactly eight mini pancakes.

Pour 4 ounces of milk.

Skin at the infusion site: Stay taut and unblemished.

Liver: Do whatever it is you've been doing. It's working.

Weather: Don't change. Stay dreary and damp.

Moon: stay half-full and bright.

Tube: be crystal clear and free of air bubbles.

Nightmares: not today!

Arguments: be nonexistent.

Stress of any kind: stay away!

Growth hormones: It's hard to tell you to scram, but settle down, will ya?

Liver: I mean it. If you've got to tinkle, tinkle the same amount of glucose and at the same exact rate.

I'm a creature of habit. Partly because I don't like change. But partly, at least when it comes to diabetes management, because I know what works and I don't want to futz with it.
We all have go-to comforts when it comes to just about everything in our lives. And when it comes to blood sugar management, I think many of us tend to err on the side of caution and stick to what we know works. (READ MORE)

As I came in the back door, I asked E. if it was OK that we had come this way. "Of course," she said, kissing my cheek, "you're family." It was Saturday night and we were all gathered to celebrate Hanukkah with our friends. Friends I've known since sixth grade, friends I went to high school with, grandparents of friends and ex-stepmothers of friends.
As with most holiday celebrations, one of the focuses of the evening was the food, particulary the potato pancakes. And Uh Mah Gawd does my friend's mom make the most incredible ones I've ever had. (OK so they're the only ones I've ever had, but that's not really the point.)
Anyway, as was requested, I sat where I was. Turns out there were mostly kids at my table, but whatever. I also sat next to Pearl, an old friend's grandmother. She has trouble walking and is without most of her upper body strength, so she essentially sat where she was, too. My friend J. asked Pearl if she could make her a plate. (READ MORE)

With all the blood that diabetes care involves, it's no wonder the "vampire" image keeps coming into play. A former T2 co-worker referred to going for blood work as "seeing the Vampire". Kerri's Diabetes Terms of Endearment list includes the entry, "Vampire cannula". For those who live in fear of (fictional) vampires, every time we prick our fingers to test... has to include the scary thought, "Am I inviting a vampire to bite me?"

"What if Maeve watches on me and if I feel low I can tell her and she can tell an adult and they can call you?"

"Is that a good idea, dad?"

I don’t let on that I have absolutely no idea how this is going to work.

"Sure, Charlie. We’ll figure it out."

At 7 years old, Charlie is finally eligible to come to work with me to "Take Your Child to Work Day." He’s put in his time, watching with envy as his big sister was able to board a 6 am train bound for Manhattan with dad in years past. He can’t wait.

"Is there anything I should bring?" he asked as I tucked him into his bed.

"Just your suit and tie and a briefcase."

"Seriously dad?"

It's hard to believe that we are already a week into the New Year. I feel like I haven't accomplished anything for being one week closer to 2010. I finally made my resolutions last night, but haven't taken any steps to obtaining them. Despite my laziness, here they are:

1) Exercise more: I'm starting out with walking/jogging two days a week, specifically Mondays and Wednesdays since things are slower paced then. I want to build up to three, four, and five times a week, but I don't want to overload myself.

Still sleeping at 7:20 am? That's peculiar. He's usually doing laps around the house with Cheerios spilling out of the box by no later than 6. Where's the ear-deafening screams? Why does the dishwasher have just dishes in it and not dirty laundry or fresh fruit? Something's not right.
When Ben finally did wake up, he was extremely lethargic. He wanted nothing to do with his pancakes and cried at anything we put in front of him. I ran out to get chocolate glazed munchkins - the true test.
He threw his head back, cried and said "Noooooooo!"
And then he did something that we'd seen before, but never from him. In Susanne's arms, his skin turned pale and he couldn't keep his eyes open. What the hell is going on?
"Test his sugar!" Susanne said. (READ MORE)

My son's baptism is this coming weekend and I've been wracking my brain trying to come up with the perfect menu. At first, I was thinking go easy, buy everything. Then I switched to the idea of save money, make it yourself. Now I've settled on buy some, make some.
What to make, and what to buy? I was going to buy a cake, then I thought it's a quick and easy bake, just pick up a mix and voila, its practically done for you. But then I realized the mixes probably have so many chemicals and preservatives in them, not to mention my arch rival white flour.
So I went online, hoping to find a mix at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's and instead I found a recipe for a natural yellow cake mix, and I had all the ingredients in the house. (READ MORE)
