I'm a creature of habit. Partly because I don't like change. But partly, at least when it comes to diabetes management, because I know what works and I don't want to futz with it.
We all have go-to comforts when it comes to just about everything in our lives. And when it comes to blood sugar management, I think many of us tend to err on the side of caution and stick to what we know works. (READ MORE)

As I came in the back door, I asked E. if it was OK that we had come this way. "Of course," she said, kissing my cheek, "you're family." It was Saturday night and we were all gathered to celebrate Hanukkah with our friends. Friends I've known since sixth grade, friends I went to high school with, grandparents of friends and ex-stepmothers of friends.
As with most holiday celebrations, one of the focuses of the evening was the food, particulary the potato pancakes. And Uh Mah Gawd does my friend's mom make the most incredible ones I've ever had. (OK so they're the only ones I've ever had, but that's not really the point.)
Anyway, as was requested, I sat where I was. Turns out there were mostly kids at my table, but whatever. I also sat next to Pearl, an old friend's grandmother. She has trouble walking and is without most of her upper body strength, so she essentially sat where she was, too. My friend J. asked Pearl if she could make her a plate. (READ MORE)

Stay.
Don't move.
Don't change.
Do nothing different.
Retrace yesterday's steps.Â
Put on the same jeans.
Exert the same amount of energy.
Count out exactly eight mini pancakes.
Pour 4 ounces of milk.
Skin at the infusion site: Stay taut and unblemished.
Liver: Do whatever it is you've been doing. It's working.
Weather: Don't change. Stay dreary and damp.
Moon: stay half-full and bright.
Tube: be crystal clear and free of air bubbles.
Nightmares: not today!
Arguments: be nonexistent.
Stress of any kind: stay away!
Growth hormones: It's hard to tell you to scram, but settle down, will ya?
Liver: I mean it. If you've got to tinkle, tinkle the same amount of glucose and at the same exact rate.

"What if Maeve watches on me and if I feel low I can tell her and she can tell an adult and they can call you?"
"Is that a good idea, dad?"
I don’t let on that I have absolutely no idea how this is going to work.
"Sure, Charlie. We’ll figure it out."
At 7 years old, Charlie is finally eligible to come to work with me to "Take Your Child to Work Day." He’s put in his time, watching with envy as his big sister was able to board a 6 am train bound for Manhattan with dad in years past. He can’t wait.
"Is there anything I should bring?" he asked as I tucked him into his bed.
"Just your suit and tie and a briefcase."
"Seriously dad?"

It's hard to believe that we are already a week into the New Year. I feel like I haven't accomplished anything for being one week closer to 2010. I finally made my resolutions last night, but haven't taken any steps to obtaining them. Despite my laziness, here they are:
1) Exercise more: I'm starting out with walking/jogging two days a week, specifically Mondays and Wednesdays since things are slower paced then. I want to build up to three, four, and five times a week, but I don't want to overload myself.

With all the blood that diabetes care involves, it's no wonder the "vampire" image keeps coming into play. A former T2 co-worker referred to going for blood work as "seeing the Vampire". Kerri's Diabetes Terms of Endearment list includes the entry, "Vampire cannula". For those who live in fear of (fictional) vampires, every time we prick our fingers to test... has to include the scary thought, "Am I inviting a vampire to bite me?"

Marvin and I went out for pancakes late last night (study week=strange eating patterns). I wasn't too concerned about my blood sugars and eating such a carb heavy/protein lacking meal. Afterall, Monday and Tuesday had showed drastic improvement.
With Monday only showing a few hours over 200 and Tuesday riding between 60 and 176 the whole day, it seemed like the insulin resistance was gone. So I ate most of my chocolate chip pancakes (but skipped on my normal amount of syrup). And bolused when we got home.

In DIABETES, "B" is another one of those letters that can stand for plenty. Basals, boluses, bruises, bumps. "B" makes me think of biscuits, babies, and books personally. And I could relate all those to diabetes but I'm not really looking for a collage. So instead, I'm going with a very specific meal of the day.
B: Breakfast is an important aspect of any diabetic's life. The first meal of the day can often make you or break you. I have to say that I'm a big breakfast fan. I grew up on my dad's homemade biscuits and waffles. I definitely still appreciate a good breakfast.
Unfortunately, breakfast is my worst meal of the day. Those few hours after are my most insulin resistant time of day. So all too often, I see post breakfast numbers way above where they should be for anyone. Especially when I'm indulgent with my favorite meals.

I spent thirty minutes on the treadmill this afternoon going at a pretty slow and steady pace. For fifteen of those minutes, I was using my hand weights to work out my arms as well. I also had my waist trimmer band on, which definitely helps the sweating factor.
So far, I'm feeling okay. I was exhausted prior to the walk and I still feel pretty tired. Today is my day to rest up though before another long week. Blood sugars are holding okay. 202 prior to the walk (after chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, of course) and a drop to 149 just after. Another half hour later and I'm at 124 with a slight bit of nausea (indicative of a steady drop for me). I've yet to treat anything though.
