I eat too much.


I know this. I have always had a love for food and an inability to stop when I should. I eat and eat until I feel miserable and then I get more upset for not stopping when I should have!


It's a terrible cycle.


All of this overeating has been the source of my weight gain and the reason my doctor thinks I am someone else. The worst part about it all is the way my clothes are fitting. Or I should say, not fitting.


So recently I started on a journey to lose 40 pounds. So far I am down 5 pounds and am hopeful for a healthy chunk gone this week.


My strategy right now is just tackling portion size and the amount of food I consume.

As the holidays approach so to do the fears of having high blood sugars. It never fails, I dream of making it through Thanksgiving and Christmas without hyperglycemia. But as I sit down and see all the beautiful voluptuous foods, I can't help but to chow down on everything!

I go through the meats, breads, veggies, casseroles, and then come the desserts. And after all that I usually go through for a second swipe at all my favorites from the first trip.

This is why I sometimes take my shot after meals, especially on the holidays. This way I can sit back and think about everything that I have had and start doing the math in my head. This can lead to overeating though, because I think to myself, "well, I might as well just keep eating and just take more insulin."

"I don't care."
That has been a familiar phrase from my lips lately. My wife asks me how many Weight Watchers points a particular meal is when we go out to dinner and I will respond with "I don't care." That probably explains why I have gained two pounds over the past two weeks. I just do not care.
And with that I have not really calculated my carbs. I have been loosely guessing and then making major corrections 2 hours later. I am still checking my BG. I am not guessing on that. But I just feel so uninterested in my life right now. I know that makes no sense especially since I am writing about it now.
I guess I am looking for advice although I do not feel I am in a place to accept or follow any of it. Maybe I want to hear, "I've been there and its okay." Maybe that will make me feel better. I don't know. (READ MORE)

I know, I know, I know. People with diabetes must exercise. People with diabetes must stay fit. This is especially true for those of us with Type 2.
And you know it. I know it. You know you know it. I know you know it. Who needs to tell you this?
Reuters and Dr. Ronald Sigal of University of Calgary and colleagues at the University of Ottawa, as announced in this article, do feel the need to tell us. Specifically, they're telling us that lifting weights and resistance exercise also helps to reduce blood sugars, just like aerobic exercise does. Aerobic exercise, that would be the sweaty kind.
This is good news.
This means that ANY and ALL exercise you do counts for good diabetes points. It all counts! I love this. (READ MORE)

Myth 6.

"If you take insulin, or more than one type of insulin -- or you wear an insulin pump -- or you have to take pills and not-eat certain foods -- you have the 'bad kind' of diabetes."

  • Fact: There is no good kind of diabetes. Each type of diabetes has its challenges in maintaining relatively normal blood glucose levels. Each type of diabetes, left unchecked, can cause complications and death.
  • Fact: The really, really bad kinds of diabetes are diabetes that has not been diagnosed and diabetes that is not actively managed, whether by pills, insulin, and/or diet, and that is not well-monitored (by home glucose testing).

Someone asked me a few weeks ago how my type 2 diagnosis affected my family. Honestly, I said, not very much. And I'm not sure if that's good or bad or a mix of both.
For one thing, I've always been the meal planner, grocery shopper, chef and chief bottle washer in our family. Furthermore, I always cooked fairly healthy for my family, tried to get a good mix of meats, veggies, starches and fruits. So adjusting our meal plan really didn't take much effort. (I know, you're wondering how I got to be so overweight if I cooked so healthy. Sweets have always been a big part of my life. The weight comes from not sharing, essentially. And I like to eat. Yesterday I attended a lunch meeting with a company that we are looking at to update our current company's website. When I arrived at the office I checked my BG before I left the car. 135. I was going to correct for it but since it was 11:30 I figured I would wait until we ordered food and take care of it all at the same time.
When I got to the office and met with the web designer we quickly sat down and began discussing our needs. It was a really good meeting and I liked what he suggested as far as some ways to drive more business our way but I started to notice a very foreign feeling in my stomach. (READ MORE)

I am taking it easy today to recover from this weekend. I spent Saturday, Sunday, and Monday with Marvin and his family celebrating the fourth of July. Although his family is amazing and supportive, I am absolutely exhausted. Yet still so appreciative.

 

We all had a great weekend catching up. I met family members that I had only heard about. We ate more than enough of some of the best food. We celebrated, drank beer and margaritas, and had a blast. This weekend came in perfect timing to the explosion that happened in my life late last week. It was the perfect distraction with extensive support from Marvin's family in getting through the issue.

I'm two days into the Wellbutrin and I'm not exactly sure how I feel. My doctor said to give it three or four weeks before really judging anything because it can make you feel weird while your body adjusts. I think I'm definitely feeling weird. Really not enjoying that experience.

 

I took the first dose around 3pm yesterday afternoon because I was so impatient to get started that I didn't want to wait another day to start. Around 6pm yesterday, I noticed a heavy feeling in my head. Like my ears were stuffed with cotton or my brain was surrounded in clouds. Within half an hour, I felt fine and I spent most of the evening in good spirits relaxing.

Today I... am recovering from a very emotional evening in which crying ensued for no reason, but I suspect it was due to a string of terrible blood sugars, including swinging from 202 to 53 to 135 within the course of several hours.

 

Today I... would really like to go in the bathroom and cry. Or just go home and cry.

 

Today I... am trying not to angrily march over to the next cube and show the lady talking about how bad her allergy shots hurt all the infusion set scars on my belly.

 

Today I... considered talking to my coworkers about World Diabetes Day, but I don't have the mental energy.

 

Today I... am struggling with a funk I've been in for about a week that is likely due to not having even one in-range blood sugar reading unless by accident, miracle or lack of food.
