Three days, or until the insulin is all used up - that is how long an OmniPod is to be worn for. Before pumping, I was unsure if the scheduled three day replacement interval was going to be a nuisance. I even pondered the idea of trying to sneak in an extra day on the pods- so long as there was enough insulin stowed away in them. Well, that notion, along with a little of my patience, consistently scurries away when I near the end of a pod cycle, and the three day itch sets in. (READ MORE)

A week into insulin pumping, I have to report that I absolutely love it. Love it, love it, love it. All of my worries and fears about it have completely been erased.

 

My blood sugar has never been better. I feel so much more stable and in control. And because I'm not dealing with the constant fluctuations, I'm not starving-hungry all the time.

 

I worried I'd have lots of lows, and knock wood, I haven't gone under 70 yet. I was also concerned about having a pump on me at all time. I thought the tubing would be annoying or the constant reminder of the pump would make it hard for me to sleep. I haven't experienced either.

The crinkled tape and vibrant red-tinged tubing looks like leftover materials from an ancient bloodletting. Charlie's battered behind gets just a moment's rest before a new site is gored into his skin.
The pump does a lot of fantastic things. According to Charlie, if you press the up arrow three times while holding down the bolus button, you can create an impenetrable blue glowing force field. Up arrow four times while holding down bolus can obliterate the High School Musical poster on his sister's wall with a single, powerful laser blast. Me? I like the ease in which we can fine-tune and tweak. I like that he doesn't have to be 200 all night. We can punch in just a dash of insulin to drop him to a safe 150. (READ MORE)

I went to my 3-month endo appointment today. (My dad also went for his check up.) Usually, I do fine with my endo, although I've never been thrilled with him. He's mainly there to tell me the blood results and fill prescriptions. Usually, I'm okay with that.

 

But today was a completely different story.

 

First, they didn't call me into the office until AFTER my dad was already done with his appointment (apparently, I was forgotten). Then they gave me hassle about doing the A1c. When it was finally done, they informed me that the machine broke in the middle of the test (now I have to wait 3 weeks to get the results from a blood draw.)

"Do you still have that on?" No. 2 asked this morning as I was working on the laundry.
"Yep," I said, cheerfully.
I introduced the kids yesterday to my new medical accessory. I explained it the best way they would understand: Mommy doesn't have to take shots anymore because my medicine is in this.
"How long do you have to wear it?" she wanted to know.
"All the time."
My official pump training is Monday at 1 p.m. But I still strapped the pump on nearly as soon as I got it on Friday. I figured why not go ahead and get used to wearing it all the time.
I wore it around Friday without an infusion set, just hanging out in my pocket or on the outside of my pocket, dodging door frames and brushing the inside of my arm when I walked. (READ MORE)
