Right now, I'm a complete bundle of nerves. Last night, I suddenly decided that today I would go off the pump. I know that I've been talking about it, but I assumed that I'd get it all straightened out and be back into "normalcy" before April 1st came around.
But you'd be surprised to find that poor control is actually NOT the reason why I'm going off the pump. In the past two weeks, I've had some highs and far fewer lows (which is just amazing). My averages are still in the 150 range though, which is what I'd settle for to get down to the 130 range (slowly, without lows).

The first time I knew “it” was in ninth grade. My class had to lead a chapel session at my private school. I was in charge of reading a passage of scriptures and leading music with some of the other kids. It was the first chapel my class had done. We’d be in front of a hundred of our peers and a dozen of our teachers.

I went in for my six-month dentist cleaning and checkup today. It went as smoothly as it usually does. No cavities. No gum problems. Nothing except for this one huge thing: wisdom teeth.
Last year, my dentist and an oral surgeon confirmed that my wisdom teeth were coming in and needed to be removed or my current smile would be scrunched together in a painful fashion. Not to mention the risk of infection and increased gum disease. But I kept putting it off. I told myself that I'd do it over Christmas break. Yet Christmas break came and I hadn't made any appointment.

Well, we did it. Charlie got through kindergarten pretty much unscathed. Last year at this time we were nervous wrecks about sending Charlie to school. The school had no experience with a child with diabetes as young as Charlie. They were noticeably nervous as well. We put a plan in place and basically just hoped for the best.
We couldn't be happier with how the school year went.
Susanne and I met yesterday with the principal, the new nurse, Charlie's teacher, Charlie's health aide (Mrs. D) and a representative of the school district to review how the year went and to revise our 504 plan to reflect the fact that EVERYTHING WILL CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!! next year.

I had a work presentation last Friday where I had to speak to several different prospective clients. I'm not afraid of public speaking, but this was approaching in a much different way. So needless to say, I was nervous beyond all belief.
I was well prepared to be nervous too. I had a Dr. Pepper sitting right beside me at all time and cut my basal in half for the three hours that I'd be speaking to the clients. I also ate a few bites of a chocolate chip cookie before going into the meeting.
My blood sugar stayed fairly stable during the ordeal. I started out at 106, hit 85 about half way through, and dropped to 65 an hour after (when I raised my basal back, too quickly I guess). I've gotten pretty good about handling my diabetes and nervousness. It's really the only emotion that affects my blood sugar, and it always makes me drop faster than a bowling ball.

I'm inked. Are you?
I have three tattoos. My first, which is also my favorite, was a simple butterfly on my right ankle. I sat on a metal folding chair with my leg twisted sideways on the tattoo artist's chair for what seemed like forever. I was 19. And then I got addicted. My second and third tattoos live on my right and left hips, respectively, and were done within two years of the first.
All my tattoos were received pre-children, pre-home ownership, pre-diabetes.
Lately, I've been thinking an awful lot about getting another one (I've even started browsing web sites). Aside from likely wanting to spend that kind of money on something else, I'm nervous about the possible effects of diabetes and getting a tattoo. I know that there are risks no matter what, even for people who don't have diabetes. (READ MORE)

Kris Freeman may have won the 30K cross-country race at the U.S. National Championships in Anchorage, Alaska last month – had he not been forced to stop and test his blood sugar late in the race. Freeman came in second.
The first and last time an American won an Olympic medal in cross-country skiing was 34 years ago. Freeman hopes to end that drought in the winter Olympics, despite having type 1 diabetes.
As a hockey household, we’ve been anxiously awaiting the winter Olympics to cheer on team USA. I’ll admit, cross-country skiing was never something I had given much thought about and it was not on my radar when I thought of the events I’d like to check out. That said, we’re now officially on the Kris Freeman bandwagon and our household will be cheering loudly for him when he races in Vancouver.

Olivia had her holiday concert last night. She was all excited about it - not nervous at all. "God, mum, you should just hear some of the other girls. They get so nervous that they feel sick. What is wrong with them?" Oh, the scorn of a 13 year-old girl.
I had her check before the concert - she was 249 and bolused to correct that. I'd rather have her run a bit high for these things that go too low. She did that once. It wasn't pretty.

I was a little nervous this morning as I set off for my walk. I know it's irrational, but I'm a little afraid of the dark, and at 5:30 a.m. it's still dark. And walking around in an area that I'm not used to walking around in when it's dark can be a little intimidating.
But it smelled like rain when I walked out the door (yes, in the desert!) and the sky was this wonderful shade of blue that you only see when the sun is about to rise. It was chilly but inviting.
Desert landscape means lots of plants all over because people need something other than rocks to look at. So there were lots of bushes and plants that I was constantly scanning to make sure no psyco people or critters were going to jump out at me.

This morning I have my first ever "pump class". Ever since I was diagnosed, I have been on a multiple daily injections routine, so needless to say, I am a little nervous about this class. I am not really sure what to expect. I was told to be there from 8-12 and that lunch would be provided. Although I am nervous, I am also excited to learn about this new way to take care of my diabetes.
