Kelly Nykaza’s daughter Leah was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes one year ago. On the topic of continuous glucose monitoring, Leah says, "other than changing it, it’s pretty good."

Pretty incredible coming from a 5 year old.

If you are like us and you are wondering if the time is right to consider continuous glucose monitoring for your child, this is an interview you’ll want to read.

We’re very fortunate for people in the online diabetes community like Kelly, who are willing to share their experiences with us so that perhaps our road may not be quite so bumpy.

I am not doing what I should be doing to take care of my diabetes. I don't check often enough. I snack without bolusing. I never log anymore. I'm being a real slacker.

It isn't that I don't have TIME for this disease. Yes, I work part time. I attend graduate school full time. And I have a lot of other responsibilities like a very needy cat, a great boyfriend, and managing the usual parts of life. But I have time to check my blood sugar, take an injection, and log some numbers every week. I could be doing that right now instead of blogging and watching TV.

The thing is that I don't have the ENERGY for this disease. I stopped having the energy somewhere between year ten and twelve. A decade of diabetes wore me out. And almost two decades really has me down. It just isn't what I want to be doing on a cold, rainy Tuesday night. Especially when I have a slight headache and my eyes just want to close.

I've been trying to stick to my new diet and exercise plan in hopes to lose weight. I did a good job on exercise until this week and I've kept up the food stipulations for about four weeks now. Yet I'm not losing any kind of weight. I'm not looking more toned. I'm exactly the same.

And I am so frustrated. I know that losing weight doesn't happen over night, but I can't even seem to get half a pound off much less a significant difference to make me feel better. I have to say that doesn't motivate me to keep going.

Today, I splurged on food and got lunch at Chick-fil-a and didn't pick a healthy option. I haven't run since last Thursday although I did move the entire weekend. But I can't seem to get my tennis shoes on or my behind into the gym this week. I just want to sleep and eat.

Despite my initial rant, Charlie’s week of hockey camp was great. He had a blast. Once we settled into the routine and got the lay of the land, everything went more smoothly. After a week of tagging along with the hockey counselors all over the Princeton campus and dealing with some very badly behaved 7 and 8 year olds, I’m happy to get back to my normal life. Ha! Normal!

As they should be, the other kids were curious about Charlie’s pump. During the week, several kids asked Charlie what it was. Charlie educated a few and at other times, he’d defer to me.

"Does that hurt him?" one kid asked after I tested Charlie’s blood sugar.

Charlie held his finger out, accepted the prick with no reaction and then pulled his hockey mask over his head and darted out of the locker room toward the ice before I could even answer the boy.

So I’m the designated research information volunteer for the Mid-Jersey chapter of JDRF. But, “if I’m being perfectly honest,” as Simon Cowell would say, I haven’t done a very good job at it at all. I just haven’t had the time to sift through the many emails I receive regarding the many diabetes studies going on around the world that are funded by JDRF.

It’s strange. You’d think that the more clinical trials being conducted would make one more hopeful for a cure. Somehow it has an opposite effect on me. As the number of studies increase, I feel a sense of cynicism growing. Too many claims of progress. Too many potential cures.

I feel like a real Debbie Downer these days on this blog - and in my life with diabetes.  I want to lend hope, and lately, it feels like I'm just lending a whole lot of stress and negativity to those who read this blog.  But I want to be honest about what I'm experiencing and in some ways it helps to get it out and share it with folks who understand.  In other words, this is another kind of downer of a post and I hope you'll bear with me.

This morning was a complete cluster f**k at my house.  I locked my keys in my car last night after having a great night out with an amazing guy.  Slightly frustrating, and I probably should have dealt with it at the time given that I had to work this morning early-ish producing our pledge drive at work.  But I'd been up since 4:45 am, I was exhausted and so was my date, and somehow my addled brain thought I could make time to fix the screw up in the morning.
