When I got home from work last night I found a large package sitting on my desk.
"Who's this from?" My son was the only one home and as usual he gave the answer most 15 year olds would give.
"I dunno."
I looked at the label and saw it came from Minimed, the makers of my insulin pump.
As of late I have been eyeing the very cool Lakers skin for my pump since the camouflage one came off but I never ordered it. Hmm. Maybe it's my next box of CGM sensors since I am almost done with those? Hmm. Maybe I should just open it and find out. Duh!

I use an insulin pump to manage my diabetes. The pump I use is from Minimed. I have always felt like they have taken good care of me and speak very highly of them.
Don’t get me wrong, I still think they are a good company but I was a little annoyed by a couple of things that happened.
First, I am signed up for the automatic refill program. Every three months a new box of my pump supplies shows up at my door and usually a little earlier then I need to I feel safe and secure. For whatever reason, my quarterly shipment was not sent.

A month ago or so I called and spoke to a representative from Minimed. Minimed is the company that makes the insulin pump that I use. The model I have, the 722, has the ability to read and work with Minimed’s continuous glucose monitoring system.
When I spoke to the representative, she said that her company has been successful at getting my insurance company to cover the cost of the system 100%! I told her I wanted to start the process to which she said that she would get back to me.
She didn’t.

It's Wednesday, when the majority of the world is at work. So when the doorbell rings, I'm pretty sure it's a salesperson -- or the kid down the street.
This afternoon the doorbell rang. I quietly went downstairs ready to get "mad" at the neighbor kid who has come to the door two Wednesday afternoons lately looking for No. 1 and being genuinely confused about why I'm home and No. 1 is not.
I looked through the peep-hole expecting to see the kid. I saw no one, but kept looking thinking that he was so close to the door that I couldn't see him. I saw something on the street, but assumed it was a trashcan. I didn't open the door, walked upstairs and looked out the front window and saw and heard a UPS truck driving away.
UPS! I didn't order anything! Does that mean I got a present?! Ooooh a present!!

I've had so many lows lately that I can't explain, I'm quite disgusted with my diabetes at the moment. I'm not catching most of them before dropping into the 50 or 40 range, plus several have happened overnight. Then tonight, I indulged with sweet and sour chicken and my blood sugar soared into the 300s before I could catch it.
I'm typically pretty dedicated to testing. I go through test strips quickly. My lancet always needs to be changed. The meter certainly gets its use. But sometimes, I just don't feel like checking. Or sometimes, I'm just not in a place to check. Sometimes I'm sleeping.

Have you seen the new Animas pink pump? Oh man, Olivia saw that on the Children With Diabetes website and just about lost her mind. "MUM!!! LOOOOOOOK!!!! A pink pump!!! When is my warranty up with MiniMed?"
Kudos to Animas for appealing to the girly-girl market. Even though Olivia's not particularly girly, it seems that as soon as she turned 13, pink was in. Although, looking at the fine print on the site, it's a limited edition. O's pump warranty isn't up for another year, so she probably will not be getting that. Bummer. Hopefully this is a trend that continues, though, with all the pump companies. If you have to be attached to a machine, it might as well be a machine that looks cool.

In my last post, I mentioned that I would be wearing some Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMS) and deciding if any were right for me.
I tried both the DexCom and the Navigator. My decision was this: there is simply no way a separate device is going to work for me. This was proven by the HOURS worth of dead zones - where I'd accidentally left the device behind. Further evidence, the fact that I regularly leave my cellphone behind when I leave my house in the morning - and that since childhood I've been known as someone who "would lose their head if it weren't tied on." Really, I think I'd lose my pump if that weren't tied on!
So, I am starting the process of trying to get a Minimed Real-Time System. I've got new insurance with my new job- so the pump part shouldn't be too great a struggle. But the CGM to go along with it is a different story.

It's strange sometimes how the tide can shift so quickly. Where I was this time last week is not where I am today. I've gone from thinking my endo was off his rocker to even consider me as a candidate for the pump, to going full-tilt toward pump therapy.
When B. first told me about MiniMed's pump with the integrated CGMS I really poo-pooed the idea, telling him that although I have high and low swings, I didn't feel like I was "bad enough" to warrant having a CGMS. I pay attention to my body, I test when I'm feeling low, etc. (It's that "I'm 'only' type 2" mentality.) (READ MORE)

Yesterday I received a package from Medtronic Minimed who is the manufacturer of my insulin pump. Minimed offers these sweet Pump Skins that are basically stickers that fit around your pump to give it some "style" and "personalization." (READ MORE)
