My family sat down for dinner last night and I was feeling frantic and stressed and generally not in a good place. My fasting sugars have been a little high and I'm sure my post-lunch have been too, with all the goodies available at work.
The tragic Colorado church shootings took place Sunday just a few miles from my home. My 4 year old has questions I don't know how to answer.
This is crush week for us for the holidays. If it's not shipped or mailed by Friday, it very likely won't make it in time. 95% of our friends and family don't live in this state so I have to be done this week.
Halfway through dinner, the 5 month old started crying. Not a light fussing, but an full-on screaming crying -- something was DEFINITELY wrong with her. Kate does not do this very often. It ratchets up my stress level immediately. I feel SO bad for her and guilty (of course) that I may have done something to cause it. And there's the worry that something is seriously wrong. So, I made an appointment with a therapist here in Providence. She is a holistic practicioner who uses yoga and guided meditation as part of her treatment. I spoke with her yesterday and I'm thrilled that she was able to fit me in for next week.
Meanwhile, the rest of the day on Tuesday, yesterday, and today were so much better for me. Though I had some serious fluctuations in bloodsugar today, I've actually been testing and I plan to take a look at my basal and bolus rates this weekend with my endo to see if there are any changes I can make that will improve the situation for me. I had a bit of a sleepless night, through no fault of my own and not for lack of trying, on Tuesday. But made up for it with a great evening, excellent dinner, and Art Cars on the Mag Channel late-night yesterday. Still, the very long work week has drained me and I'm home early tonight, ready to sleep.

What types of spiritual practices or mental exercises do you use to help you cope with diabetes? For me, I like to mix things up and do whatever feels right at the time. Typically I use martial arts, exercise or various "mental exercises" like praying, meditation and reading spiritual books. I also love to listen to a variety of music and sit and relax around fires. This weekend will have me trying something that I have never attempted before but something that I have always been interested and curious about - a Native American sweat lodge.

On Saturday, I will mark my 29th year with diabetes. I'm not sure what else I have to say about the anniversary this year. I don't plan to celebrate, but I do plan to take a few moments to reflect on my successes over the years.
I have only mild retinopathy in one of my eyes. Otherwise, I am complication free.
I have health insurance, it helps me to stay reasonably well.
I have access to nutritious food and I can afford to get regular activity.
I have graduated middle school, high school, and college with diabetes in my life.
I am a successful professional.
I love and empathize as well as any person I know.
I extend forgiveness very well. I think, in part, because I must forgive myself on a regular basis.

Bottom line, my health and my fitness keep me sane. Everyday, literally everyday I look at my reflection and box, as I am walking through the apartment, or past the mirror in the bathroom. Sometimes outside, when I am working on something by my truck or some random reflection on a building, I’ll look at the reflection and practice my technique.
In the air, when I am doing the most basic of tasks, I find myself throwing my fists in the air at invincible targets. Sitting at my desk even. I move side to side, I jab, followed up with my crazy-strong right cross and my powerful hook and uppercut.
I knock them out.
Wap! Pow! Bang! Blast! ….. Got you’re *BLANK*! Mother *BLEEPER*!
Why am I fighting? Why the hate? Who am I fighting? Why am I like this? Is this healthy? Do I feel strong?
These are the questions I ask as I train. I think deep down I fight because of what I’ve been through, or what I go through. (READ MORE)

Peace, Harmony and The Purpose of Life
Everyday people with diabetes are faced with the conscious decision to live or to die. Our decisions have to be made consciously as they are scrutinized much more closely than the non-diabetic. But ultimately, we are no different.
This is the realism that we encounter many times throughout the course of any day. This is what we deal with and this is the reality that we live with in our lives. We either live with a conscious effort to understand and control our diabetes or we make unconscious decisions and then pay the immediate bad prices for these actions. Life as a diabetic is not an easy one. It is a life that has to be lived under constant management and awareness of everything.
The smallest of things has the largest of impacts.

I know, I know, I know. People with diabetes must exercise. People with diabetes must stay fit. This is especially true for those of us with Type 2.
And you know it. I know it. You know you know it. I know you know it. Who needs to tell you this?
Reuters and Dr. Ronald Sigal of University of Calgary and colleagues at the University of Ottawa, as announced in this article, do feel the need to tell us. Specifically, they're telling us that lifting weights and resistance exercise also helps to reduce blood sugars, just like aerobic exercise does. Aerobic exercise, that would be the sweaty kind.
This is good news.
This means that ANY and ALL exercise you do counts for good diabetes points. It all counts! I love this. (READ MORE)

I hit "ESC" on Toohey to double check when my last bolus was. Yep, right on time. I suspect I'll be slightly high since I changed my site this morning and had a fast-food breakfast. But when I see 304 I'm shocked. I squeezed out another glob of blood and checked again. This time 302. Son of a f*%#ing b*&%h!
I had taken 9.5 units to correct for a hideous fasting (which is why I changed my site a day early; I'd been running high since I put that site in on Sunday morning) and for the excessive amount of carbs I was eating for breakfast. I had even logged on to the restaurant's web site for nutrition information before bolusing.
I'm so livid now that I can't finish doing what I was doing. I can't think. What the hell is wrong? Two things came to mind:

I've battled my weight for decades now, like many people with type 2 diabetes. I might win a skirmish here or there, but there doesn't seem to be a victory or even a ceasefire in my near future. It's hard to understand why I can't conquer this when I've conquered smoking and other bad habits. It's even harder to forgive myself for failing repeatedly.
That's why I was relieved (delighted is more like it) to see Oprah all over the news this week "confessing" to her weight re-gain. If you watch her show or read her magazine or even scan the tabloid covers at the supermarket, you already knew she was gaining again. But she came forward to talk openly about it, perhaps partially to boost her New Year's week ratings. I also believe it was to help herself and others. As Dr. Phil says, you cannot change what you don't acknowledge.

Exercise! Do something! I can’t tell you how life-changing exercise and fitness is for me…but I’ll try!
So this morning I woke up, had some coffee and some breakfast, and then worked for 3 hours or so until I felt it was time to get in some physical activity. Since I’m in Florida at the moment I really am enjoying taking advantage of working out in the sun. It feels so good and I love that the sun aids in improving my circulation in my feet and my entire body. Definitely something that you guys out there can relate with.
