Dear Oprah,

 

I used to be a fan. I used to watch your show all the time. Probably every day. That was back when I was in school and was home by the time you were on.

 

After I got into the real world and started working, I rarely saw your show. And frankly when I did, it was pretty sensationalized. As a member of the media, I pretty much hate sensationalism. I may be in the media minority when it comes to that, but it's a direction that I simply can't stand our industry has gone in.

An old adage suggests there is strength in numbers.

 

 

Not the numbers of our ABCs -- although there is strength in that knowledge -- but the strength of many people, standing together, for the same cause.

 

Many people making the same choice made Jesse Ventura -- a third-party candidate -- governor of Minnesota, and Abraham Lincoln -- also a third-party candidate -- President of the United States.

 

Many people speaking out on television and in the media made everyone aware of AIDS and of Breast Cancer -- even though those two diseases kill and disable far fewer people than heart disease and diabetes.

 

Why is it, then, that hundreds (thousands?) of Twitter users turned their avatars red for World AIDS day, or green to support the protesters after the Iranian election, but not blue to support World Diabetes Day?

I was walking into the store as they were walking out (couldn't wait to feel the rush of cold air after walking from my car to the front of the grocery store; 9 p.m. and still 100 degrees outside. Autumn, please?).

 

I noticed him first: shorter than I am (a lot of people are... I'm 5'10"), muscular, tan skin, seemed confident in himself, attractive, but mostly I noticed the muscular.

 

She seemed just as confident. I noticed how thin she was and attractive and how short her shorts were.

 

As we passed I looked forward, but somehow noticed something that made me turn back. Something white. And round. And ... was that... tubing? Yes! An infusion set on the outside of her thigh! I saw it! It was like finding Waldo. Such exhilaration!

In the past few months, I've really noticed the media attention given to diabetes. Countless times the "d-word" gets thrown into a media line, leaving me clinch to the familiarity of my disease and cringe at the inaccuracies they portray. Unfortunately, too much of this media hype is giving diabetes the wrong kind of attention. Too much of it is snide comments about the disease and not about funding for a cure or the pitfalls of diabetes.

I'm always on the lookout for media representation of diabetes. I appreciate the media feedback that we get, although sometimes it infuriates me at how things are portrayed. Generally, I really don't see many movie or TV shows that feature diabetics in any great length.

 

However, as I was flipping through the channels last night, ABC's Private Practice caught my eye. One of the medical stories of the episode featured a diabetic little boy on an insulin pump. His infusion site had become infected and his blood sugars were elevated.

I heard about the new Hannah Montana episode from Kerri's Six Until Me blog last week. I knew that Disney had a personal interest in diabetes because of the Jonas brother who has type 1. Honestly, I really wasn't surprised to learn that an episode dealing with a diabetes diagnosis was scheduled.

 

However, I was surprised after I watched the unaired episode to see how poorly diabetes was portrayed by Disney. I gave them some credit for even approaching the subject and trying to make it as simple as possible for the half hour show. But I couldn't excuse them for their blatant disregard of everything diabetics have worked for since the introduction of carb counting.

I'll tell you another secret.  I kinda LIKE the Jonas Brothers. Laugh all you want since I am quite a couple decades away from their usual tween-aged fan base.  Disney signed them though, and from Annette Funnicello until Miley Cyrus and beyond, Disney has a proven eye for musical talent.  (Maybe not class, but definitely talent).

 

Nick is, at 15, the youngest brother of the singing group (they do have another even younger brother named Frankie - think Andy Gibb snubbed from the BeeGees for his youth).  As everyone with any connection to diabetes knows, Nick has had type 1 for almost 3 years.

A pilot in Denton, Texas, made an emergency landing near a freeway yesterday because he felt lightheaded. Only one media source stated he was diabetic. Yet the article made every major newspaper in the area.

 

Thursday, I drove down the highway in rush hour traffic digging through my bag and eating everything I had with me. As I stuffed the glucose tabs into my mouth, I sat wondering about my fellow drivers. Were any of them diabetic? Had they driven this low before? Would they be mad because I was driving low (granted we didn't reach speeds above 15 mph)?

This is a bit of a rant. I get on this horse periodically, ride it around, waving my flags and guns, foaming at the mouth a bit, going slightly nutty. You'll get used to it. Or ignore it.

What is the deal with lumping both types of diabetes together? Seriously. If I have to read one more freakin' article about how high fructose corn syrup causes diabetes or get one more stupid email from some clueless acquaintance, telling me that if I just put my kid on the Atkins diet, she'll be cured, I'm going to go to the top of the water tower and start picking people off. OK, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but holy cow, does it make my blood boil.
