The other night my wife, kids, and I went over to my sister's house for dinner.


Upon arriving we realized we had forgotten a crucial ingredient for the dish my wife was bringing. (Cheese-if you are wondering!)


My wife and I took a quick trip to local grocery store to pick up the cheese and possible get something for dessert. This was not the original plan but it seemed like a good idea to me!


We went into the store and quickly found the cheese she needed.


"Alright, let's go," my wife said assuming we were done!


"Um, I was thinking we should get dessert." I said it with that smile she cannot resist or at least, she makes me think so.


"Alright, what do you want?"


And this is when I freeze up. I have no clue what to get.


"Maybe just some cookies. That sounds good."

I wish he didn’t love food so much. I wonder if it would be different if he wasn’t raised with so many food restrictions and limitations. I wonder if we created this monster. This monster that if given the green light would eat a whole penguin in one sitting if it was fried and could be dipped in some sort of sauce.

Since getting my hands on a review copy of Jenny Ruhl's new book, "Blood Sugar 101: What they don't tell you about diabetes" (Technion Books), I haven't been able to put it down.
Finally, an intellegent book about type 2 diabetes that tells it like it is and offers practical advice without talking down to me or engaging in quackery. Reading it, I feel like I did when met best friend Sue in middle school or when first found Diabetic Mommy. There's someone else who gets it! (READ MORE)

Since I often go into grueling detail when Charlie is going through a rough period of high blood sugars, it’s only right that I also share some good news for a change.

 

Charlie’s blood sugars have been near perfect for the last three or four days. To Lucy Van Pelt, happiness may be a warm puppy and to John Lennon, happiness may be a warm gun, but to me, happiness is knowing that Charlie’s blood sugars have been in the low 100s for hours and hours. Just as long periods of highs make me sick to my stomach, long periods of just-rights feels like nirvana. It can completely make my day and get me chirping with the birds.

 

It’s also nice to go into our quarterly endo visit, which is tomorrow, on a good note. I almost said, "on a high note." No way. No high note. I want a good A1c. Big money! No whammies!

Family. Health. Necessities.
We were all thankful for so much as we shared our turkey feast this year. We are spending the Thanksgiving weekend in Albuquerque New Mexico this year with my sisters and mother. Having to make a 13 hour drive made me thankful for low carb snacks and caffeine too.
The thing that stands out as I contemplate the meal last night was the laughter I heard and participated in. I laughed a lot. We brought up old memories of family events and funny stories. Joked about each others habits and quirks, and just laughed at my kids and my nieces being silly. It was a lot of fun and so comforting.
One of the few qualities I have is the ability to make people laugh. I love to poke fun at myself, the world, and pretty much everything! I am also good about not being mean but just funny. All and all it was a very good time. (READ MORE)

Last week I wrote about my experience with my new endo. Today marks a week from that first visit and the day I am supposed to fax over a weeks worth of BG readings and boluses from my pump.

ADM logoIt's my time...to change my habits.

 

Numbers have been consuming my life in the past two weeks. Every time I turn around, a number pops up that leaves me feeling out of sync, exhausted, and completely burnt out. Averages like 241 or even 301 are consuming my logbook. Seeing numbers below 170 are a rare occurrence, with most riding in the upper 200 and 300 range.

 

The other side of the numbers is the insulin levels. I've raised my Lantus to 32 units in the evening now. And from that, I've had my first low in a week (and it was only a 72 after not eating for quite some time). I've also almost doubled my Humalog, which seems to be the biggest deterrent to those pesky 300's that I was seeing so regularly.

Where to even start...?

 

And that is the point, you don't know where.

 

When someone is newly diagnosed with diabetes, where should their educational journey begin? Sure, there is the inevitable hospital stay, and the chat with a doctor, and possibly a self-injection tutorial (for the insulin requiring crowd), but what is the next step... after the hospital scene?

Yesterday I attended a lunch meeting with a company that we are looking at to update our current company's website. When I arrived at the office I checked my BG before I left the car. 135. I was going to correct for it but since it was 11:30 I figured I would wait until we ordered food and take care of it all at the same time.
When I got to the office and met with the web designer we quickly sat down and began discussing our needs. It was a really good meeting and I liked what he suggested as far as some ways to drive more business our way but I started to notice a very foreign feeling in my stomach. (READ MORE)

Up and down. That's the way it's been lately. Numbers are up, numbers are down, nothing is making sense, patterns are confusing, emotions are frustrating. I've seen some wildly high numbers in the past week or two that are completely blowing my mind. Go to bed at 109 mg/dl, but wake up at 5 am in the 300's.
