I haven't ever been the kind of person to party, drink to excess, or stay out at the clubs all night. Maybe it's something in my personality or the way I was raised, but I never really had the interest. I never had that crazy party phase. I don't really want to, although I do enjoy a good night out with friends.

 

Like last night, I went out with some girl friends to watch a local band (one of the girl's husbands is in the band). We met at a Mexican food place then walked over to the bar. The girl I'm friends with is diabetic too, which is a nice thing when you're drinking and dancing and you know someone else there gets this disease.

I've been on Lantus for about ten years now. I tried different insulins over the years (NPH, Ultralente, and the like) plus that almost two year stint on the pump. Lantus seems the best for me, although I'd still like to try Levemir. Lantus keeps me stable without giving me constant lows.

 

The drops are predictable. With split doses, I get fairly steady blood sugars. Overall, I've been happy with Lantus for years. But lately, I've noticed a change that I've very rarely experience but often heard about.

 

With every injection lately, I'm experiencing a lot of pain. It isn't happening with Humalog, just my Lantus. I'm not sure if it's the location or just the insulin. I generally give my morning and evening Lantus injections in my bottom. Both my doses are too big for what's comfortable for me elsewhere.

Tuesday night, I switched my Lantus over to a once-per-day shot instead of the split doses I'd been using previously. I started with 22 units of Lantus at 8pm. I knew I'd see some highs, but I didn't want to risk an unexpected night low after making the first switch.

 

And I did see some elevation. I ran mostly in the 180-290 range all through Wednesday, which wasn't as high as I was expecting really. I made sure to consider food in the highs, along with the usual post-breakfast spike. And I was confident that a few more units of Lantus might do the trick (or at least get me closer).

Right now, I'm staring at my logbook trying to decide what changes I need to make and what else I want to try with all this. This past week has been a bit rocky so my averages are all over the place. Mostly, they're high. At least higher than I want them to be. So while I'm staring at my book, I'm trying to piece together this last week and figure out what is going on with these numbers.

I've had quite a few decent numbers since I've started the whole Lantus switch from the pump. Wednesday was a bit rocky, as well as the first part of Thursday. But by two PM on Thursday, I was seeing stable levels close to range. It hasn't been completely stable or all that easy, but it's been comforting to already see numbers like 120 pop up on the meter screen.

 

Getting the night numbers to cooperate has been a bit challenging. For Friday morning, I woke up at 171 after 16 units of Lantus the night before. But Saturday morning, I woke up at 66 after 16 units of Lantus the previous night. Last night, I did 17 units of Lantus at 10PM, dropped to 69 at 3AM, but woke up at a nice round 110. So obviously, I need tweaking.

It's been close to 36 hours since I went off the pump and back on the Lantus and Humalog routine. Luckily, I'm still alive and kicking. Sure there have been a few bumps in the road, but overall it hasn't been that bad at all.

 

I started out with 10 units of Lantus on Wednesday morning, but stayed between 220 and 250 the entire day. So when the evening injection came around, I decided to increase the Lantus to 12 units. But I still woke up at 223 after a pre-bed reading of 255. So I raised the Lantus again this morning to 14 units.

 

After breakfast, I saw the highest number yet: 371. I wasn't so excited, and didn't feel so well. I bolused for the number and waited for the decline. And a few hours later, I was 176 after eating a banana.

Right now, I'm a complete bundle of nerves. Last night, I suddenly decided that today I would go off the pump. I know that I've been talking about it, but I assumed that I'd get it all straightened out and be back into "normalcy" before April 1st came around.

 

But you'd be surprised to find that poor control is actually NOT the reason why I'm going off the pump. In the past two weeks, I've had some highs and far fewer lows (which is just amazing). My averages are still in the 150 range though, which is what I'd settle for to get down to the 130 range (slowly, without lows).

I started using a pump back in October of 2007. It was a rough and terribly rocky start. The pump company wasn't helpful and left me stranded in the dark with this new technology. There were moments that it left me sobbing over the phone to my mother, claiming that I was seconds from throwing the expensive device against the wall. My A1c climbed from 6.9 to 7.6.

 

After about six months of that and some help from the online community, I finally got the pump closer to being stabilized to my life. It still wasn't pretty. My A1c plateaued around 7.3 and 7.4. I couldn't seem to make the pump fit with my life, despite what everyone was saying. Apparently, I wasn't as stable as I needed to be with my schedule.

Low blood sugars that happen in the middle of the night really suck! You're dead asleep, and then all of the sudden your dreams start getting confusing and weird. You start feeling like you should probably drag yourself out of bed and get something from your sugar stash. You barely have the energy to get up and then once you do you stumble around and nearly black out. You feel confused and you act and look as though you've had WAY too much to drink. Then after you climb back into bed you just sit there for a while and you try to wait patiently while your sugar goes back up or until you feel good enough to fall back asleep.

Well, that's what happened to me last night, and what I tend to experience almost once a week.

I woke up this morning about 30 minutes before my alarm to answer a call from nature. I stumble to the restroom and as usual I set my insulin pump on the sink counter. I should explain that I have a relatively small bathroom so the sink is pretty much half of the room. Well, no sooner do I set my pump down that it slides off and slams on the floor.
Ouch!
I have had my pump fall before but this one sounded extra hard. I leaned over and picked up my poor pump to see if it was okay. It was not. The screen was blank and even though I closed my eyes and wished for it to be fixed, it did not work. (READ MORE)
