Last week I wrote about my experience with my new endo. Today marks a week from that first visit and the day I am supposed to fax over a weeks worth of BG readings and boluses from my pump.

It sounded like the ideal situation. One phone call and all my diabeetus testing supplies and medicine would be delivered straight to my door. No last minute trips the the pharmacy. No paying out of pocket to be reimbursed later. Everything would be taken care of with one quick phone call.
I fell for it in September. Like most relationships, it started out nicely. Three or four "quick" phone calls and they promptly delivered a three month supply of test strips and an equal number of lancets. And for a girl who only changes her lancets when we change the clocks (and only if I remember to that week), I now have a 600 year supply of lancets in my closet.
At the time, they were also supposed to send a three month supply of insulin. It still has not arrived. Five or six phone calls later, they tell me they are still waiting on my doctor to return their call.

I haven't changed the lancet in my "finger sticker" for a couple days now. Surely I am not the only one around that does that!??. I changed it because I visited a friend this past weekend and, "he wanted to see what his blood sugar was." I know I am not the only one around that has gotten that request. Curious "non-diabetic" pals or acquaintances always want to, "see what it says for them". And then I give the explanation about what a "normal" range is and what the number that is displayed on the meter "means". It is all fine and dandy though. I kind of like taking the "teacher" role when this situation arises. It provides me the opportunity for one-on-one, and maybe even sometimes group presentations on diabetes. Maybe we could just call this "Diabetes 101". Diabetics around the world could start charging tuition for quick, on the spot, diabetes education classes! How does 5 dollars per person sound? Olivia asked me last night when she was going to have her next appointment at Joslin. I wasn't sure, but told her it should be coming up soon. (Must check into that, actually.) She said she wanted to ask the doctor something. When I asked her what she wanted to know, she said she wanted to talk about alternate site testing.
We've done this in the past, without much success. But looking at her fingers last night, I told her she really needed to try again. Her fingertips are mangled - they're covered with black dots and she said they really, really hurt.
Part of the problem is that she tests right on the pads of her fingers rather than on the sides. The endo has told her repeatedly to stop doing that, but Olivia doesn't listen. Now, though, she's having a lot of pain and she's going to have to do that.

I must admit -- with a bit of a blush -- that I'm very irresponsible when it comes to disposing of sharps and used pump supplies.
There was a time when I put every sharp in a medical waste container and The Mr. would dispose of it at the hospital for me. That was mostly pre-diabetes, though. That's when I was taking shots of blood thinners when I was pregnant.
For some reason, it became easier to drop the insulin needles in the bathroom trashcan than to find a sharps container. I frequently put "Get Sharps Container" on my to-do list, but it never got done. I never seemed as worried about the lancets, although I think they are still considered sharps.
In our new neighborhood, the city offers a free recycling program. And, get this, you don't have to sort anything! Just put all your recyclables in a big trashcan and the city picks it up once a week.

There has been much heat in the diabetes online community concerning the new Medicaid/Medicare restrictions on paying for blood glucose testing supplies for people with diabetes, including the belief that these limitations will quickly replace current private-insurance coverage policies. We're seeing some of those repercussions here as The Other Half has just been informed that instead of covering testing supplies ad libitum (as many as his doctor writes for, for whichever brand she writes for), they will only cover OneTouch or Accu-Chek strips, to a maximum of 51 strips per month for people with diabetes who do not require injectable insulin, and 204 strips per month for those who do require it. This post was supposed to go up during American Diabetes Month - like, two days ago.
But it's worth posting, even a little late.
"No (wo)man is an island..."
Ain't that the truth?
Every time I read a post about a scary low, or a child running from a parent with a needle or a pump set. Every time I read a post about being exhausted by the stress of the constant battle that is diabetes, or a morning shower had in tears because it's just been "one of those nights."Â
Every time I cry or laugh with someone who lives on the other side of the country, or the other side of the world.Â
Every single time. My heart swells.Â
Just knowing that any time of day, I can pour my heart out and someone will be there to catch it. To understand.

I remember posters of dull needles from the pediatric endo's office. The difference between a new needle and the old was always quite disgusting. The old was frayed, with shards of metal sticking out abnormally. It was definitely a good way to scare a teenager into changing lancets and syringes on a regular basis.
The bad thing was that I never remembered that poster after I left the doctor's office. I'd go back to my usual routine. I wouldn't change the lancet until someone reminded me. I'd use a syringe repeatedly, until the numbers wore down or the needle bent. It could be days before I'd even think about switching it out...after multiple uses per day.
It's a bad diabetes habit that I'm in. I try to be better...I put extra lancets and syringes in my meter kit. I try to make schedules, changing them on Sundays or once a night or on the 1st of the month. Anything to make the habit more often than it is.

Awhile back, I bought a new One Touch Ultra Mini for my spare meter. It was right around the time that the One Touch Delica lancing system was being introduced. First, let me say that I'm a One Touch girl through and through. Maybe it's because I've used them for 19 plus years. They were my first meter and they've been a constant in a changing disease.
I'd been using the same lancing device for many years though. It was a great improvement from the old days so I didn't think much of it. I'd narrowed my "pricking fingers" down to my left pointer and middle fingers so only they would have callouses. You get used to them after awhile, but you still don't want them on every finger.
I tried the Delica one time but didn't like it. It took multiple attemps to actually draw blood and it didn't provide much when it finally did show red. I moved back to my old system and didn't think twice.

Today's DBlog Week Prompt: Today let’s tackle an idea inspired by Bennet of Your Diabetes May Vary. Tell us what your Fantasy Diabetes Device would be? Think of your dream blood glucose checker, delivery system for insulin or other meds, magic carb counter, etc etc etc. The sky is the limit – what would you love to see?
My fantasy device isn't so far out of the box. It's a combination of a few devices that we've heard about over the years. These rumors that circulate about certain meters or lancets or pumps, but never seem to hit the everyday market. I always wonder where these things get lost and why I never see them in my hands, but I assume it's the FDA. So today, I'm pretending that there is no FDA and my device is perfect just the way I want it.
