It took us just short of a year, but we finally discovered the right time of day to change Charlie's infusion set.
From the start of our pump training, we were instructed to change his site in the mornings. Before bed was not recommended for fear of low blood sugars.
So, we did as told.
And for months, Charlie's blood sugars were extremely high for a good part of the morning and into the early afternoon on site change days.
Our doctors weren't sure what to make of it. We all theorized that it was the stress of the site change sending him out of the stratosphere. Seemed to be a good enough explanation. He did absolutely flip out with site changes. The hope was that he would eventually not stress so much with the site changes and the blood sugar levels would fall into place.
Never happened and never happened. (READ MORE)

Olivia is starting to look like a pin cushion. Her stomach is a mass of red marks, scars and bumps. It's not pretty. She refuses to wear a bikini or half shirt because of how her stomach looks (not that this bothers me, mind you!).
The problem we're currently having is that she's got so much scar tissue built up that she's running out of real estate for her sites. She currently uses her arms, her stomach and her lower back.
I'm sure some of you will suggest thigh sites, but she has really bad luck with those. Thigh sites generally make her rollercoaster - she'll be in the 400s in the afternoon and by dinner, be in the 60s. It's bizarre. I've tracked it and she's not over-bolusing or over eating. I think it's an absorption thing. She's got meaty thighs (she can thank me for that one). I don't know if that makes a difference or not; regardless, thigh sites just don't do it.

By watching my wife's body language while she tests Charlie's blood sugar, I can get a good idea of what the number is before she tells me. A peppy vertical nod of her head generally means he's in range. No reaction whatsoever might indicate a number just out of range or in the low- to mid-200s. A quick shake of the head in anger is likely a number in the 300s.
Tight lips as if holding back the most foul word imaginable, eyes to the ceiling and a sharp gasp could mean only one thing. He had to be over 400.
Charlie was 480 before he went to bed last night. That would explain his complaints of stomach pain.
I hate this! I hate this! I hate this! I hate this! I hate this! I hate this! I mother-scratchin' hate this!

A few months ago, I decided to start using my thighs for my infusion sets. I wasn't getting good absorption from my bottom and the adhesive gives my stomach a rash. Within a few days, I loved that I could use my thighs.
The set would catch less on my jeans. It was easier to place my pump on my belt or in my sock. There was less pain than my stomach. Overall, my thighs proved to be very effective (and not as scary as I thought).
Over the past months, I've rotated my infusion sets from my right to left thigh and back. I've also rotated the area ranging from the upper portion of my thigh to a lower portion. I generally know where the previous infusion sets have been because the needles cause a lingering red spot. So it was easy to avoid using the same exact spot.

My mind moves all the time. I'm always thinking about something. In an effort to separate my home time from my work time I have to ban myself from thinking about work while in the shower. I know, it sounds bizzare, but first thing in the morning I'm already thinking through the tasks I have to complete before the day is over.
So, this morning I was searching for things to occupy my mind while in the shower. I settled on the string of nasty high blood sugars I've had for the last several days. Perfect 5:30 a.m. topic, right? Washing, my hand ran over my infusion site. I considered its position on my abdomen. I seem to have the best absorption when my site is located within, say, a three to four inch radius of my belly button. Yes, exactly the area the pump information tells us to avoid.

I took a little unintentional break from Metformin recently. I can’t remember how long it was, but probably at least a week-ish. Frankly, I renewed the prescription and then didn’t have the chance to get to the pharmacy and then when I was near the pharmacy completely forgot that I had a prescription to pick up. Despite the calls from the pharmacy telling me it was ready.

Right now, I'm staring at my logbook trying to decide what changes I need to make and what else I want to try with all this. This past week has been a bit rocky so my averages are all over the place. Mostly, they're high. At least higher than I want them to be. So while I'm staring at my book, I'm trying to piece together this last week and figure out what is going on with these numbers.

Sometimes I wonder if diabetes hasn't been the cause of all my other health conditions. It's always seemed weird to me that I'm the token "sick" person in my family. No one else seems to have issues, so why me?
Even when I was diagnosed at four years old, I was the only diabetic in my family. They called me the "token" child. The one who just happened to get this random disease.
And in second grade, I got shingles. My brothers never had shingles. And we all had chicken pox at the same time. So why me?
Then in 2006 when my health started drastically changing, I began to wonder again. Was it something that I did? Was it the years of diabetes? What was causing all these issues in my life? When everyone else in my life was in perfect health?

I tend to get the best absorption from pump sites smack dab in the middle of my abdomen. Say, within a several-inch radius of my belly button. It's kind of odd, actually, since I used my love handles exclusively when I was on shots.
Several times since Toohey and I hooked up (such a bad, bad pun) I have tried to use my hip/love handle for a site. Partly because I know it's good to rotate and partly because often the real estate around my belly button is taken up. However, the two times I can remember using a hip site, I had to rip it out before its time was up because my numbers were so terrible.
So I was having trouble lately figuring out how to be able to use my hips and other areas of my body. I know, this shouldn't be rocket science, but it really did take me a while to figure out that all I had to do was gradually move my sites outward instead of yanking them miles across my body.

I try to change my infusion site every 3 days. Generally, I hit the mark almost perfectly at 72 hours. Lately, I've been running the pump all the way to the last drop of insulin so my infusion sites go a little longer (only about 5 hours). I've just gotten lazy in changing them out.
Even before I started doing that, my pump supplies started piling up. I would get shipments for 3 months before I was anywhere near being out. I have a 3-month supply just sitting in my closet while I still use the current supply I have (about 1 month). My next shipment will probably be here within the month.
