I'm an information junkie. And I think I'm one of those people who always wonders why some people don't at least watch the news once a day or scan the headlines on any reputable news web site. I tend to fall into the habit of making sure people are in the loop. I'm not a know-it-all, but I'm happy to tell people what's going on.
And that includes what's going on in my life. However, I recently discovered that letting my mom in on every detail of my diabetes management is not necessarily a good thing. There are some things moms just don't want to know-even if they think they do. (READ MORE)

As a writer and editor, I am constantly scouring the Internet for freelance writing opportunities. I used to focus my searches on business news and general features, which is where I cut my teeth, but my eyes are catching more health-related openings lately.
I sort of accidentally fell into healthcare writing when my editor suggested it would be a good beat for me since I'm always talking about diabetes and other healthcare issues. It would be a great addition to our magazine, too, she said. So I became a health writer, too, and found that I quite enjoy it. (READ MORE)

The web has brought so much clarity to my diabetes time trial. This last week has solidified in my head how much knowledge it has given me. I had an e-mail conversation with a newly diagnosed type-1 and it re-surfaced all of the
thoughts and questions I had when I was first diagnosed.-
What exactly is a honeymoon phase and why isn’t there a beautiful woman involved?
- Can I indulge my endless burrito desires, and how much tomatillo green-chili salsa is too much for one man?

Nobody likes a know-it-all. I've worked really hard for a number of years to keep myself from saying, "Actually, this is how it is...." in just about every situation. I've worked hard to decide when I should make an issue out of what I think is right.
I think I'm doing pretty good with not forcing people to know that I know everything. Even when it comes to diabetes. I've written here before about avoiding conversations about diabetes and not getting into too much detail about certain diabetes-related issues. It depends on the person and the conversation and so many other factors.
But tonight while I was proofing a story for work, I went back and forth about whether to make the distinction between type 1 and type 2 diabetes for an audience that the majority of whom likely have no idea that there even is a difference.

5 out of 7 days! That's right - I exercised 5 out of 7 days last week! Wooooo-Hooooo - yay me! Ok, so it's overboard but I need to congratulate myself a lot for it to have any affect. I have what's called an external locus of control for motivation (take a quiz on yours here) - in other words if you tell me 'good job' it means much more to me than if I say it to myself.
Exercise does make a huge difference in my sugar levels, my fasting level today was 88!
I have been using stars on our kitchen calendar as motivation. Yes, the little star stickers that teachers use. Blue stars for 15 minutes or more, silver for 30 minutes and above and the elusive gold star for an hour. Sounds silly and I felt silly about it until I started getting a glow seeing the stars stack up on the September page. We all have to find what works to motivate and reward ourselves. (READ MORE)

When you go to the doctor, do you go prepared with a list of questions for the doctor? That was one of the questions during last weeks DSMA session on Twitter.
I would say that about 95% of the time, I do go prepared with both a list of questions and a list of the medications that I'm currently taking. And I do so because I have way too many medications to remember them all, and usually have a number of questions that either April or I want answered.
I've been asked a few times, "Why do you take a list of medications? Doesn't your doctor already know which you're taking?"

Today (March 24th) is American Diabetes Alert Day. This is the 21st year for this event, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), though I don't recall prior years. They did get a mention in Dear Abby, which I'm sure is the ultimate PR notice for this type of event.

I've gone back and forth about whether to wear a medical ID bracelet. Part of me says I shouldn't bother because once a paramedic friend of mine told me one of the first things they do to a person who has passed out is to check their blood sugar. Part of me says I should wear one as an extra measure of caution.
I wore a medical ID bracelet throughout my third pregnancy. I don't think I ever took it off -- not in the shower, not for exercise, nothing. I don't remember why I stopped wearing it. Perhaps I lost it. In fact, now that I think about it, I think that's exactly what happened. I had removed the ugly silver chain and replaced it with strands of colorful beads to match whatever I was wearing. Well, the chains and clasps were cheap and ...

I missed reporting last week. I'm happy to say that my weight has stayed the same and my fasting sugars are edging below 110. I'm sad to say I am continuing to struggle with good food choices, and losing the battle too often.
One of the things I was happiest about with the week 2 challenge information was the article on healthy food substitutions. I almost didn't click on the link. How many times have we read articles about this that say inane things like "Swap water for one of your colas every day to lose 15 lbs in one year!". As if anyone watching their weight, or with diabetes, is still drinking sugared soda and doesn't know it's a poor choice!
