Around 2am, I woke up with the same pain I had two weeks ago. All the normal symptoms of the urinary tract infection were there. A few hours later, the same thing happened. By 9am, I wasn't feeling any better.

 

I started to drink as much water as I could tolerate and took my usual round of vitamins. Since it's been a mere two weeks since I was at the doctor for the same symptoms, I'm 100% certain that it's another UTI (despite my blood sugars being in near perfect range recently).

 

I called the doctor to leave a message. All I wanted was a prescription. I was willing to give a urine specimen, but didn't want to wait for his next available appointment. I'm supposed to be heading out of town today, so waiting for his appointment would set me back almost 2 hours on my mini-vacation (mini because it's actually for a job interview).

I'm inked. Are you?
I have three tattoos. My first, which is also my favorite, was a simple butterfly on my right ankle. I sat on a metal folding chair with my leg twisted sideways on the tattoo artist's chair for what seemed like forever. I was 19. And then I got addicted. My second and third tattoos live on my right and left hips, respectively, and were done within two years of the first.
All my tattoos were received pre-children, pre-home ownership, pre-diabetes.
Lately, I've been thinking an awful lot about getting another one (I've even started browsing web sites). Aside from likely wanting to spend that kind of money on something else, I'm nervous about the possible effects of diabetes and getting a tattoo. I know that there are risks no matter what, even for people who don't have diabetes. (READ MORE)

I posted last week about feeling out of the ordinary and just plain sick. It was off and on all week with some days feeling great and others feeling terrible. I waited it out through the weekend, trying to take it easy as much as possible and eat as best as I could.

 

I thought I'd made it through without needing anything other than my immune system. But Tuesday night, I was feeling the worst I'd felt so far. I had suspected a urinary tract infection before, but now I was almost positive. The urgency, the pain, all those telling symptoms were all much worse. To top it off, my blood sugars were lingering in the 200's despite boluses.

I went to the doctor about my leg again yesterday. A different one. One that I feel much more comfortable with in the whole scheme of things. She seemed confident, personable, and concerned. They asked about my blood sugars, about what had been going on, and all that jazz.

 

And she believes that the infection is probably from a spider bite that turned into MRSA. Yep, MRSA. The big, scary staph infection. So now I'm sincerely hoping the new course of antibiotics kicks in soon. Because I'm totally run down in body and soul with this whole thing. I'm so exhausted, but can't sleep. I'm in pain. I'm annoyed.

By the end of the day I was almost regretting that I had been drinking so much water throughout the day. I was in the bathroom about every 20 minutes or so.
It started yesterday when I got a twinge and a sort of seize when I used the bathroom. It was different from the feeling I had gotten (or seemed to remember) when I had a urinary tract infection in the past. But I knew something was still definitely wrong. Especially when I got up at 4 a.m. last night to go potty, and then again 20 minutes later, and still getting this seizing twinge of a pain in my very low abdomen.
I decided I'd load up on water today and even--gulp--drink some cranberry juice even though I really can't stand cranberry juice (I found some cran-grape at the gas station, which may not have the same effect as cranberry, but it was all I was willing to tolerate, especially since it wasn't sugar free). It's not unusual for me to be woken in the wee hours of the morning. Typical offenders include No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and The Mr.'s snoring. Despite the amount of water I *think* I drink, it's surprisingly not to visit the facilities.
But Sunday morning, some time before 5 a.m. I awoke. Confused, not feeling right and uncomfortable. Something propelled me to go potty. Oh, the pain was terrible! I had the same symptoms of blood in my urine (which pretty much mimics a urinary tract infection) that I had at the end of February. This was miserable.
Still uncomfortable, I tried to go back to sleep, but the stinging wouldn't let up. And, well, The Mr. was snoring. I maneuvered around the creeky boards in our 100-year-old home to the living room couch, where I honestly thought I'd be able to fall asleep. But I found myself in the bathroom literally every two minutes squeezing out teeny drops of relief. (READ MORE)

Last Thursday I noticed a spot on the tip of my second toe. I am not the most flexible guy in the world so being able to really get a good look at it is difficult. I asked my wife to check it out. She said it looked like a blood blister.

 

I cannot remember ever bumping my toe or stumping it. For the life of me I have no clue how my toe ended up purple.

 

My wife’s first response was typical, “Go to the doctors!”

 

I of course said yes and spent the day putting off calling. I posted about it on my blog and all the comments I got said the same thing, “Go to the doctors.”

 

You must understand, I get very annoyed at the doctors. My doctor never seems to be in or have an opening when I need him. I usually end up seeing one of the doctors on duty which drives me nuts because they always say, “follow up with your doctor.” Nice.

Over the weekend, after walking the dog, Olivia came to me to show me her pump site. It was oozing blood and had soaked the sticky stuff as well as a good-sized spot on her shirt. She said it was really hurting her and would I help her take it off and put in a new one?

 

In the middle of a small family party, we went up to her room to fix her up. I pulled the site out and blood gushed everywhere; on to her sheets, her shorts, it was a mess. Could I find gauze? Nope. So I grabbed cotton balls. Word to the wise: cotton balls stick to blood. A lot. And they pull apart and make a big mess.

It's back. And this time I'm definitely blaming the blood/bacteria in my urine on my refillable water bottle. Remember several months ago when I had two horrible infections in the course of two months? Remember that I searched online in vain to blame the problem on my Nalgene bottle, but to no avail? Well, I ditched the Nalgene bottle and the problem went away. Except that when you live in the desert you have to drink water. Lots of water. So I bought another refillable water bottle and drank gallons of water a day. Well, not really, but you get the picture. And what happens? Three months later I'm in agony again.
