On more than one occasion I've been rather surprised at how low a post-meal or random blood sugar check is. Not in a 'wow-I-did-good' kind of way; more like a 'geez-I'm-53-and-not-feeling-it' kind of way.
I don't consider myself to "suffer" from hypo unawareness, but it's safe to say that I get it quite often. I remember plenty of times waking to a fasting of around 60 and feeling great.
So when I have a day like today, it really drives me crazy.
After lunch, I was feeling pretty shaky. Not terribly low shaky, just like a going-low kind of shaky that I knew needed to be dealt with soon or it would get bad. I expected to be in the 60s and was quite shocked with an 83. I treated, thankful that I caught it early and went on my way. (READ MORE)

Since I can remember, I've always had certain symptoms of being low. A funny feeling in my stomach, shaking, cold sweats, feeling tired, slow or incomplete thoughts. Depending on the low, sometimes certain symptoms would be worse than others. Almost every single time, I got this feeling in my stomach kind of like butterflies. Lately, I've been having some of these low symptoms when my blood sugar is not even close to a low. I get the feeling in my stomach, I feel shaky, I even start slurring my words. I check and I'm fine. 141. 126. Even 204. So why do I feel low? (READ MORE)

Olivia's had a few scarily low blood sugars recently and didn't really realize that she was having them. One was in the middle of the night and woke her up, which is good, but the others were at home and she was pretty oblivious.
I worry about her becoming unaware of her hypos, so I always ask her how she's feeling when she does test low. Most of the time, thankfully, she has symptoms - shaking hands, feeling lightheaded, that sort of thing. When she stops and thinks about how she's feeling, she's aware of the symptoms and the need for treatment. It's when she's preoccupied that she doesn't pay attention. Normal, really, for a 13 year-old. Scary for me, though.

I am always cold. At night I sleep mummified in a blanket burrito. Sure mornings are difficult since I do not want to face the frigid temperatures that accompany a typical Southern California morning but I do with a chipper grin after just having a wonderful night of deep sleep.
But last night was different. I woke up sweating. I was on fire! Someone must have turned the heater up or something. My wife woke up and asked, "Are you alright?"
"It's just freaking hot! What is the heater set at?"
"Where is your machine?"
Machine? I mean, it took me a second to even understand what the heck she was talking about. Did I actually forget that I have diabetes and have had it for 18 years? What is wrong with me? (READ MORE)

It is a little-known fact that Lionel Richie had diabetes in the 80s. It is believed that Richie contracted the disease after sleeping with a fan in Singapore during his 1984 tour of Asia. He later recalled his days with diabetes as the darkest seven days of his life. It was during these dark days that Ritchie penned this hidden gem to the melody of his smash hit, "Hello."
[Sorry, Â you're gonna have to sing along. Thems the rulez.]
I'm Low
I've been alone with ‘betes in my mind
And in my dreams I've cured this thing a thousand times
I sometimes think I'll pass out on the floor
I'm low. Can't you see I'm forty four?
Can't you see it in my eyes?

Every day with diabetes is a little different from the last. There are ups and downs. There are good days, bad days, and something in between. I never know what diabetes will toss my way. I never know when it will knock me to the ground or give me the strength to rise above the ashes.
Today was a fairly normal day, with a few diabetes kinks. So I decided to track a day with my diabetes...to show the world what it's really like inside these walls.
11:25am: Oversleeping is the enemy right now. And my blood sugar starts out high at 160. I'll take that over another low like last night though (a sneaky 57 that left me with no symptoms at all).

What kinds of exercises, hobbies, or activities do you enjoy doing and what kinds of things do you do to navigate around blood sugar issues? This was my random thought of the day so far, so I thought I would share it with you guys and see if you would tell me your stories in return.
Personally, one of my most favorite passions is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I am training about 5 times a week or so, it makes me feel great and I love it. But one thing about Jiu Jitsu is that it's very intense and it's difficult to find the balance between having good sugars and being able to participate fully, say for example, like any non-diabetic person would.

I've swallowed my pride and decided to apply for disability services here at school. They can offer me a few resources that I do not have access to otherwise. Most importantly, they give me the ability to register early for class and to notify my professor's that there is a legitimate health issue that I deal with.
The past two semesters, I've considered doing it, but I've also thought it was too embarrassing. But finally, things have gotten to the point where I'm realizing that it's not embarrassing, it's reality. So I've taken the initial steps to go through with it.
