I have been keeping a dirty little secret. I don't know why it feels like a dirty little secret, it's legal in 50 states and not immoral.
I've told everyone I haven't needed insulin since Kate was born. I was up to 30+ units a day of NPH. I haven't taken any NPH since her birthday. I also had an insulin pen of Humulin for the days that I just didn't control myself at lunchtime. Sometimes it was lunch out with the girls, or birthday cake at work, or just unfortunate run-ins with the evil vending machine. But it was important to control my sugars for the baby's sake, so I did what I needed to do. (READ MORE)

Around the third week of taking Byetta I noticed a marked difference in my appetite. Not only did I not feel the pangs of hunger at almost every turn, but my portion sizes at each meal have dramatically decreased. In fact, I found that having half of a small cucumber, 10 crackers and cheese and a glass of water for lunch was more than satisfying on a number of occasions. One night for dinner, I shocked my husband when I sat down with a handful of carrots and a glass of water while the rest of the family had tacos! Some days I feel like I can skip a meal altogether-something I can't ever remember feeling on a regular basis.
Due to my much smaller appetite, I have finally experienced a slight weight loss. I'm down just 4 lb. in five weeks, but considering that I haven't been able to restart my exercise routine I find this very comforting. (READ MORE)

The other day, Michelle posted about censoring her blog to not upset her mother sometimes. I realize I do this too, but not for the same reason. I tend to censor my writing out of superstition. I'm like one of those people who mouth the word cancer. When things are going good for me, I know if I blog about it, things will quickly turn around.
Last week, I chose to not look over my shoulder (or toss salt over it) and jump up and down with glee over my new pump. I was so excited about it, and how much easier it made my diabetes control.
I should know better than to speak up when things are going good. I should have whispered instead. I even knocked wood to fend off the fates, but I guess they heard me over all that banging.

I started using a pump back in October of 2007. It was a rough and terribly rocky start. The pump company wasn't helpful and left me stranded in the dark with this new technology. There were moments that it left me sobbing over the phone to my mother, claiming that I was seconds from throwing the expensive device against the wall. My A1c climbed from 6.9 to 7.6.
After about six months of that and some help from the online community, I finally got the pump closer to being stabilized to my life. It still wasn't pretty. My A1c plateaued around 7.3 and 7.4. I couldn't seem to make the pump fit with my life, despite what everyone was saying. Apparently, I wasn't as stable as I needed to be with my schedule.

My job will be ending sometime this summer. Consequently, I am investigating our health insurance options. Since hubby is self-employed, we have always covered the family under my work policy.
Now, I know that "health care in this country is in crisis"! I know this is a huge touchpoint for political candidates. Yes, I know all this intellectually.
Now it's PERSONAL. COBRA, offered by my employer by federal mandate, is more than a house note EVERY month. Private insurance is still pricey - more than what we paid on 2 car notes. And it carries a $2000 deductible per person. Some sloppy math later and it could be $15,000 a year before they pay any expenses for us.
