If by some miracle diabetes is cured, I shall name my next two children after the two cancer drugs that made it possible. We will adopt two Eastern European brothers and name them Gleevec and Sutent. I just hope everyone gets along.

Charlie: Mom! Gleevec called me Sugar Boy!

Susanne: Carey, can you deal with this? I'm running out to buy more cake.

Carey: Gleevec, stop teasing your brother. Besides, he's cured now. We don't call him Sugar Boy anymore.

Susanne: We never … oh, forget it. Charlie, do you want some pie too? I can ask them to sprinkle jelly beans on top. Or would you rather Skittles?

I love music.

Ever since I was a little kid I could sing and dance to every song on the Earth, Wind, and Fire greatest hits record. I would dance whenever Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder was played even if it was a jukebox in a crowded restaurant. And no matter the time of night, when Barney Miller’s theme song started my mother said I would come running from my room in my PJ’s to dance to the song in front of the TV.

I love playing it, listening to it, and even writing it sometimes. When I was a kid I played the trumpet. In Junior High learned percussion which I played throughout high school and in my 20’s I learned to play guitar. Lots of music always playing around my home and car. I love it.

One of the most frustrating aspects of diabetes management is the fact that diabetes has a mind of its own. At any given moment, your body can do the strangest things that you have no control over. Stress, hormones or the weather can have a huge impact on blood sugars and insulin levels. And it's the worst when it's completely unexpected.
Every so often I have weeks where I run higher than normal. I've never found a correlation to one specific trigger, but usually I notice it's when multiple triggers seem to go off at the same time. Whether it be a combination of increased stress and decreased sleep or change in hormones and a change in exercise or maybe even all four, I run high for a few days. (READ MORE)

I got to the office at 8:00 AM. My appointment was for 8:30 so I figured I would read some magazines in the waiting room for a while before I met with my new endocrinologist.

After walking down a very long, narrow, and deserted hallway I found the room number. I took a deep breath and grabbed the door knob. It was locked.

Down the hallway and down the elevator I went and found a bench to park on for a while. As time ticked away I started thinking about what my doctor should look like or act like. I took out my Blackberry to check my email and to post some Tweets

8:20 rolled around and I headed back upstairs to the long, narrow, deserted hallway that I am sure I have seen in a movie. The door was still locked. I leaned up against the wall and waited.

While procrastinating on the internet today, I came across a funny article that reminded me of my early days of diabetes. The Roadkill Diet: A Low-Carb, High-Varmint Sensation?
The sad thing about this article is it refers to a report about how squirrels near my home are not safe to eat. First off, I had never heard of people eating squirrels before, but perhaps I've lived a sheltered life. Second, I live right outside New York City. Why would anyone in my area be eating squirrels? I was reading to my son last night. We read every night, since he was about 3 months old. James has a book of fairy tales that he particularly favors. Last night he chose it and the story "Goldilocks and the 3 Bears". A nice adaptation of it can be found here.
As I'm sure you all recall, Mama Bear makes porridge for breakfast, but it is too hot to eat, so the Bear family goes out for a walk. Goldilocks, who is wandering about the forest alone, comes upon their cottage and walks right in. Papa Bear's porridge is too hot for her, Mama Bear's porridge is too sweet, but Baby Bear's porridge is just right so she eats it up. (READ MORE)

It's been one week since The Mr. had gastric bypass and he's doing really well. He rode his motorcycle the more than 20 miles to his firs post-op nutrition class yesterday! (Don't worry, it's not a crotch-rocket-type motorcycle.)

Since he has developed insulin resistance -- and also because it's apparently protocal after gastric bypass -- The Mr. has been checking his blood sugar four times a day: fasting, before lunch and dinner, and at bedtime.
