With a tainted past of endless symptoms ranging from irregular periods to joint pain, I am constantly looking for new ways to manage my life. By manage my life I mean that I look for new techniques to relieve stress, I change my surroundings to optimize my happiness and I closely examine the medical choices I have to make. This all started about three years ago. Right after my senior year in high school, I started experiencing an array of symptoms. Slowly, they all compounded leaving me with an entire page of bullet points of things going wrong with me. It's been a little over three weeks since I started tapering off the medications I've been on for the past 18 months. If you're new to my health world, I was on bio-identical hormones for a multitude of health conditions (PCOS, hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue). Quite a few of my major symptoms disappeared or eased while I was on them (joint pain, mood swings, more regular periods, fatigue, and so on), but a few in particular were only making my life worse. Much worse.

 

My acne (one of the main symptoms I'd originally gone in with) had not only persisted but gotten 100x worse going from moderate to severe. And even though my periods were much more regular, I was still experiencing terrible headaches and cramping several weeks out of the month.

I've been running high again for the last few days. Part of it is my fault and part of it isn't. The part that is came about because of the part that isn't. I got so frustrated that insulin just didn't seem to be working again that I just stopped caring. Boluses would be late. I forgot my Lantus twice last week (granted I was extra busy and extra stressed).

 

I just feel like if diabetes doesn't cooperate, why the heck should I keep trying so hard? Sometimes I just want a break of the whole thing. Sometimes I just want to throw in the towel and say that I'm not going to stress over it. That I refuse to surrender my life to diabetes if it refuses to play fair.

I spent quite a bit of last week in desperate sadness. My mom would call and I'd want to stay on the phone forever. When we'd hang up, I'd be overwhelmed. My mind raced with doubt of relationships, nostalgia for the past, and a general hatred for what my life was. It was the all too familiar signs of the mood issues I had that started the investigation into the rest of my health.

 

Back in 2006, I started having what I term "crying spells." Moments of complete hysteria brought on by absolutely nothing. Not the nothing of a stubbed toe or a snippy comment. The nothing of a perfectly fine life. And I'd suddenly be in tears. My overall mood stayed okay, determined by stress and outside forces. But these breaks were out of my own control, out of body experiences.

Inexplicable bloodsugars in the 300s. 

 

Waking up way late because my bloodsugar is in the twenties and everyone else in the house went to work.

 

How much of a pain it is to have a glass of wine with diabetes on board.

 

Worrying about complications.  

 

Little floaters in my eyes that make me think I'm going to be blind tomorrow.

 

How long it takes for a cut to heal.  Even if I am in excellent control.

 

Not being able to eat without counting.

The February "O - The Oprah Magazine" arrived last week and I just got to take a look at it.  Our dLife reader and commenter, diabeteshope, called it perfectly last month right here.  It seems that Oprah's weight gain she attributed to a thyroid problem may well have been hormone related.  MOST people really cannot go off thyroid medication after they have started it.

 

Oprah says that after just ONE DAY of taking bioidentical hormones, she started feeling better.  Boy, I didn't know any legal drugs worked that quickly!   (Just kidding!)

I met with my bio-identical hormone specialist on Tuesday. They drew blood, so we'll see what physical differences can be seen from my treatment. I've had a lot of success with relief of symptoms (regular periods, acne clearing, less fatigue, more energy, better moods).

 

I am still on cortisol, progesterone, and several kinds of supplements (one to help me sleep, one to lower my cholesterol/triglycerides, one to raise my vitamin levels). I started out on the thyroid, but had some side effects and went off of it. The plan was to get my other hormone levels stabilized then retry the thyroid.

One of the most frustrating aspects of diabetes management is the fact that diabetes has a mind of its own. At any given moment, your body can do the strangest things that you have no control over. Stress, hormones or the weather can have a huge impact on blood sugars and insulin levels. And it's the worst when it's completely unexpected.
Every so often I have weeks where I run higher than normal. I've never found a correlation to one specific trigger, but usually I notice it's when multiple triggers seem to go off at the same time. Whether it be a combination of increased stress and decreased sleep or change in hormones and a change in exercise or maybe even all four, I run high for a few days. (READ MORE)

I've been extremely frustrated with my health lately. I'm usually at a heightened sense of frustration, but the past few weeks have hit me hard. To the point that I'm feeling hopeless, desperate, and just plain lost in the sea of chronic conditions.

 

My diabetes isn't the main issue, even though it's always a source of stress in my life. Mostly, I feel like I'm just going along with my diabetes at the moment until my doctor's appointment later in the summer. I'm keeping up with my insulin, eating normally, exercising, and all that...just not focusing on making changes. I feel like I don't know where to make the next change, so I just want a break to absorb what I have right now (which are averages in the 150's).

Progesterone is best known for causing the monthly gift that so many women dread. It peaks suddenly right before that time of the month and causes the uterine lining to be shed. There are other things that progesterone is not as well known for, but are equally important. It inhibits breast tissue overgrowth (meaning less cause for breast cancer), increases metabolism (weight loss), and mobilizes fluid (no more water retention). Progesterone thins the blood (lowering the risk for blood clots), stimulates bone growth (prevents osteoporosis), enhances the thyroid, and so on.
