In the beginning, there is orange and black foil.  That foil is joined by yellow and red, with the black fading away.  In what seems like an instant, the yellow and orange are things of the past and the red takes hold alongside glittering green and silver.  All of these beautifully colored foils, they signify the enemy.   They are the harbingers of what is, quite possibly, the most difficult time of year for me; the dreaded days between Halloween and Christmas.

As the holidays approach so to do the fears of having high blood sugars. It never fails, I dream of making it through Thanksgiving and Christmas without hyperglycemia. But as I sit down and see all the beautiful voluptuous foods, I can't help but to chow down on everything!

I go through the meats, breads, veggies, casseroles, and then come the desserts. And after all that I usually go through for a second swipe at all my favorites from the first trip.

This is why I sometimes take my shot after meals, especially on the holidays. This way I can sit back and think about everything that I have had and start doing the math in my head. This can lead to overeating though, because I think to myself, "well, I might as well just keep eating and just take more insulin."

As people with diabetes, we have to make choices about literally everything everyday. Much of diabetes management is trial and error, and many of those decisions and choices we make daily lead to error.
Christmas is a time of gifting, and in the magazine publishing world, we often get bombarded by gifts--quite often of the foody nature--from advertisers or other clients. Last year around this time, we received an enormous gift box of food from Harry & David. It was enough to feed our office of six for lunch one day and leave us drooling over leftovers for several days. So when the same box arrived today, we all went crazy over it. (READ MORE)

Why can't diabetes give me some room to get some things done this season? I swear, I have had more "diabetes in the way" moments lately which is driving me nuts!
So there I was, cruising through the local Target store looking for some gifts for a gift exchange party we were invited too. I could not decide on a fun gift like a board game or go with the décor type like a cool candle or something. Now keep in mind I was power walking through the store because all I want to do is get my gift and get the heck out. I like most guys am not a shopper at all. Frankly, I hate shopping.
As I am standing in an aisle staring at the wall o' board games a sudden feeling of hunger hits me. It was more like famine. Let's just say that I almost tore open the Ice Cream Cone puzzle and started eating pieces. Then the sweating started. Great, a Christmas Shopping low. (READ MORE)

As I came in the back door, I asked E. if it was OK that we had come this way. "Of course," she said, kissing my cheek, "you're family." It was Saturday night and we were all gathered to celebrate Hanukkah with our friends. Friends I've known since sixth grade, friends I went to high school with, grandparents of friends and ex-stepmothers of friends.
As with most holiday celebrations, one of the focuses of the evening was the food, particulary the potato pancakes. And Uh Mah Gawd does my friend's mom make the most incredible ones I've ever had. (OK so they're the only ones I've ever had, but that's not really the point.)
Anyway, as was requested, I sat where I was. Turns out there were mostly kids at my table, but whatever. I also sat next to Pearl, an old friend's grandmother. She has trouble walking and is without most of her upper body strength, so she essentially sat where she was, too. My friend J. asked Pearl if she could make her a plate. (READ MORE)

How is it that I went through this holiday season with zero visits to the gym and eating a ton of calories - with a net weight gain of only 1/2 pound and a meter average of 133 mg/dl?

 

If I knew the answer to that question, I'd be rich. 

 

I'd bottle the secret and sell it.  Well, I'd give it to you if I knew and liked you, but mostly I'd sell it.  And probably eat the profits.  And you know, that wouldn't be a big deal, because I'd have the secret.  

 

I've got some theories....

 

Karma?  I'm pretty nice.  And I've mostly been good this year in terms of diet and exercise.  Perhaps I'm reaping the karmic benefits of my past good deeds and behaviors?

First off, let me say that in my New Year's Eve post, I said IF I were going to make resolutions, those would be mine! I gave myself an out already!
I could keep this information to myself but I know it will only fester. I would then feel the need to lie about my health plans, etc, etc. In the interests of dieting naked, I will be honest.
I have gained 10 pounds from my lowest weight of 2007, last seen at the end of October. (READ MORE)

Last week I wrote about my fattest night ever and how I was going to begin the road of weight loss.

 

That was dumb idea to start on the Friday before a holiday weekend.

 

But I did anyway and honestly, couldn't we always find an excuse as to why we should wait to start losing weight? I can always think of something it seems.

 

Over the weekend I did everything in my power to stay off the couch and get out of the house. This stops me from snacking and sitting and watching cooking shows that just make me want more snacks!

 

The other thing I am doing is making some better choices when it comes to food. I have to be honest with myself. I am not going to eat salads everyday, or bun-less burgers. That is not me.

Towards the start of the Passover seder, three cakes loaves completely-formed pieces of matzoh are raised with the incantation,

 

"Lo, this is the bread of affliction [poor bread, lakhma ani] that our fathers ate in the land of Egypt. Let all who are hungry come and eat..."

Traditionally, we consider this bread "afflicted" or "poor" because it was made hastily, without having had time to rise. It was "poorly" made, and "afflicted" by a lack of the airy texture we associate with bread.

One of the traditions leading into Passover is purging one's house of chometz, or leaven — those foods which have been, or could be, transformed by leavening (primarily packaged or wild yeasts). Except for those grain products which have been specifically watched over, in both a religious and a production sense, to make certain there has been — and can be — no leavening, preparing one's house for Pesach means purging it of all grain products. (In recent years this has become more symbolic than actual, but that's a long digression.) Except for the shmurah ("watched over") matzoh and matzoh products, it's not unlike what many households do when there's a new diagnosis of celiac, or an anaphylactic peanut allergy.
