This is not the post I planned to write this morning.
Having a nearly one-hour commute (everyone flees the city in the summer, so traffic is much, much lighter) often gives me a lot of time to think. This morning I thought about what a crappy mood I had been in on Sunday and that it had carried over to this morning.
I tried to blame it on the kids: a four-day weekend trying to keep the kids entertained and not arguing and generally not getting on my nerves is exhausting.
I tried to blame it on AF: though she has left the building.

Congratulations to Mark G. for winning the first-ever 2007/2008 Fantasy Diabetes League. Mark won with a staggering score of 46 points for enduring a down-right spattering of ridiculous comments related to his daughter's diabetes.
In his own words, following his wife's trepidation in ratting out the numerous offenders of diabetes etiquette (that seem to be growing on trees in Texas), Mark says:
"Damn her social graces, the FDL won't win itself."
We at the FDL applaud Mark's competitive spirit.
What makes Mark's victory even more impressive is that he's been in the diabetes game for only about six months. As a mere rookie, he and his family have amassed more diabetes drivel than most would in a lifetime. Well done!

Long day.
Long day after a long night after a long day after a long night. Tired. Very tired.
Not in mood tonight to negotiate with Charlie when he throws a minor tantrum because it's shower time.
Angry dad voice comes out. I hate my angry dad voice. I hate using it on any of my kids, but I'm especially regretful after the fact with Charlie.
Charlie whips his head back on to the couch and then lays face down on the floor. I've asked him five times now to come up with me for a shower.
"Charlie! Get. Upstairs. Now!"
He crawls upstairs slowly on hands and knees like a weak desert wanderer searching for water. "Can't," he moans. "I'm so tired."
I'm certain he'd be up the stairs like a leopard if said let's play a video game.
"Charlie! Now!"
The voice in my head tells me he can't be low, you just tested him. Don't fall for it. He's just being a 5 year old not getting his way. (READ MORE)

I guess technically, I joined the diabetes online community back in October, 2005 when I joined dLife, and I became active in the overall DOC some time in 2008 -- but it wasn't until this year that I, and others, had the opportunity to "eyeball" the folk we'd been e-mailing, blogging to, commenting blog posts from, tweeting, and otherwise conversing with on various diabetes-related forums and social networks. 2009 is also the year dLife launched the dLife Community, and the year I started blogging here at Blogabetes.

I am sitting in the waiting room at the hairdresser, flipping through a magazine that highlights what celebrity stylists are doing with hair that is blonder, smoother, tamer and thinner than my own. I'm tired -but I've worked all day - so that's normal. My appointment was a half hour ago, so I think that my feeling totally annoyed is probably justified. It's not until I see two heads of the same extension-filled yellow hair on a pair of identical faces staring at me from the same shiny magazine page that I realize - something could be amiss with my blood sugar. The old fable of Androcles and the Lion -- or in some versions, the Mouse and the Lion -- highlights an unusual amity between two beings who are usually considered predator and prey. In the story, the lion has been crippled by a thorn stuck in his paw which he could not reach, see, or remove. The prey, whether mouse or man, sees the problem, overcomes his fear of the predator, and offers to remove the thorn. The wound heals, and the lion is ever thankful to his unlikely physician.

Yesterday, I searched Marvin's bright blue eyes as they danced in the afternoon sun. I marveled at the gray of my cat's fur. I glanced at the scenes flying past the car window.
It was a fairly normal day. I woke up, I went to lunch with Marvin, I spent the evening with my mom. I didn't think twice about my life. Until I was watching TV last night and the thought popped into my mind, I hope I don't go blind.
It was an episode of "Without a Trace." A girl around fifteen years old had suddenly gone blind from a retinal disease. In the episode, she struggled with the loss of her sight. She acted out, she was forced to develop new systems and patterns, she lost it.
