The last week has been filled with high numbers. Consistent results in the 300's. Morning numbers in the 170's and higher. Only two lows, brought on by extensive Humalog use. 217 is not a pleasant average to look at.

 

I'm positive that I know exactly why these numbers are all so high. Which frustrates me (the reason, not the knowing). A bad mix of birth control pills and Accutane. Both have side effects like high blood sugar or blood sugar changes.

 

I'd definitely say these were high and definitely changed. And I'm very annoyed. I've raised my Lantus to 31 units in the evening, which has brought lower numbers for today. So I'll leave it at 31 units for the next day or two in order to see how it's working long term.

Last week, I spent several days in Mexico on vacation and on a business trip. With the extra carbs and the change in normal routine, my averages went from the 140's to the high 150's. I had one or two severe lows and a handful of minor lows. I also had one day where my pump site went sour and sent me soaring into the 300's for several hours.

 

Coming back from Mexico has been interesting on my blood sugars. I've had a few lows, of course. But at the same time, I've decided not to try so hard to keep my numbers down. I'm not completely blowing it, but I'm just not stressing myself out over highs and off numbers.

 

So Monday night, I decided to order a pizza while working on a research paper. It was nice to eat the pizza, do a fairly normal bolus, but not stress about what my blood sugar might be in the next 12 hours. I didn't even freak out when I saw consistent 200's on my meter screen.

Charlie's ice hockey session ended yesterday. After a rocky start – which I wrote about recently – I must say; blood sugars have worked out beautifully.

 

Without too much trial and error, we found a routine that worked and stuck with it for the remaining four weeks of the hockey program.

 

I tested him just before he took the ice, unplugged him and gave him a 20-carb banana (with no bolus) to cover the intense workout. Unsure how it would work out in the beginning, careful disconnection of his pump felt like an attempt to dismantle a bomb. "Work damn you! Work!"

As parents of children with diabetes, we are constantly being challenged with difficult decisions to make.

 

Charlie has wanted to play ice hockey for over a year now. He lives for hockey. He mimics the moves he sees on television from professional hockey players, pretending to stop on a dime and spray ice on the hard-wood floors. He sets up little hockey figurine players and simulates game situations. When he's not doing that, he plays hockey on his Playstation. And when he's not doing that, he and I play indoor knee hockey in his bedroom where he repeatedly takes ferocious slap shots into my groin. It's great fun. The kid loves hockey, is what I'm tryin' to say.

 

The waiting was finally over. I knew how excited he was for this moment, so I didn't want to screw it up on my end. I came with a simple plan:

 

1. Feed him lunch before he plays

2. Disconnect pump

The new year is off to an auspicious start. Despite being hampered by pink eye and a very nasty cold, I've already accomplished my first resolution – grow a manageable light winter beard as a distraction to increasingly thinning hair. Done!

 

Christmas was nice. Santa rocked it. Although …

 

I hate to be nitpicky, but there was one Christmas present under the tree that we just had to throw out due to the odor. Remind me next year to specify in my letter to Santa that "working pancreas for Charlie" should be kept on ice.

I woke up at 87. I drank a juice and had two granola bars. I bolused for the extra carbs that didn't treat the low.

 

I started feeling foggy so I checked my blood sugar. 83. I had another juice and a small snack. I still didn't feel "normal" so fifteen minutes later, I had another small snack.

 

An hour later and my blood sugar is now at 92. My brain is still foggy. I'm about to fall asleep at my desk. So I'm drinking half a soda. And watching for the upward trend that I know will follow shortly and send me soaring into the 200's.

As everyone knows by now, my blood sugars have been elevated lately. Since about last Tuesday, my averages suddenly shot up into the 200s when usually I average 140s. All last week I was scared to make any changes just because I couldn't figure out why I was running so high. It's always my luck the day I increase basals that my blood sugars will drop back down and I'll end up with horrible lows. So I just kept blousing and tried to really watch what I ate to keep my levels down. Nothing worked. (READ MORE)

Since Olivia had her turn with the 12 hour, puke-til-your-stomach-turns-inside-out bug, her blood sugars have been running low. I kind of expected it yesterday, but today they've been hovering around 60 for far too long for my liking.

I had her disconnect for a while, which helped, but as soon as she hooked back up again, she started dropping again. It's very weird. Is this normal? She's never had this happen before when she's had a stomach thing, but then, she hasn't had a stomach thing quite this badly in a very long time.

I've been checking her a lot more frequently than usual - and we already check 8 - 12 times a day - so I'm seeing these precipitous drops and they're kind of freaking me out. I think I'm going to have to dial back her midnight to 3 a.m. basal rate because she woke up yesterday and this morning at 50. That's verging on scary low, as far as I'm concerned.

In February and March we sought the guidance of diabetes author and coach Gary Scheiner to see if we too could "Think Like a Pancreas." Our few meetings energized us briefly, but soon enough, we were back to feeling lost and utterly confused. After about five months, the pump wasn't working out as we hoped it would.
In April we decided to throw out all carb ratios and basal levels and begin with a clean slate, following more pump frustrations and a disappointing A1c of 9.6. We felt we hit rock bottom. We worked daily with the pump educator, tweaking and tweaking and tweaking and scratching our heads until we could tweak and scratch no more. (READ MORE)

Remember that song that the Red Hot Chili Peppers covered? Roller Coaster of Love? I always think of Olivia's crazy blood sugars when I hear that song. And this week, that song has been on a permanent loop in my head.

Starting on Saturday, Olivia's blood sugar never got below 168. She mentioned that she was running high, but I didn't download her pump information until Monday. That's when I saw exactly how high she'd been running. It wasn't pretty.

She had a high of 527. Most of her blood sugars were hovering around the 300 mark. This was exacerbated by the fact that, once again, she's been neglecting to test and put the blood sugar reading into her pump. On Saturday, there were only 2 readings in the pump. Everything else was just a bolus for carb intake.
