The last week has been filled with high numbers. Consistent results in the 300's. Morning numbers in the 170's and higher. Only two lows, brought on by extensive Humalog use. 217 is not a pleasant average to look at.

 

I'm positive that I know exactly why these numbers are all so high. Which frustrates me (the reason, not the knowing). A bad mix of birth control pills and Accutane. Both have side effects like high blood sugar or blood sugar changes.

 

I'd definitely say these were high and definitely changed. And I'm very annoyed. I've raised my Lantus to 31 units in the evening, which has brought lower numbers for today. So I'll leave it at 31 units for the next day or two in order to see how it's working long term.

The other night my wife, kids, and I went over to my sister's house for dinner.


Upon arriving we realized we had forgotten a crucial ingredient for the dish my wife was bringing. (Cheese-if you are wondering!)


My wife and I took a quick trip to local grocery store to pick up the cheese and possible get something for dessert. This was not the original plan but it seemed like a good idea to me!


We went into the store and quickly found the cheese she needed.


"Alright, let's go," my wife said assuming we were done!


"Um, I was thinking we should get dessert." I said it with that smile she cannot resist or at least, she makes me think so.


"Alright, what do you want?"


And this is when I freeze up. I have no clue what to get.


"Maybe just some cookies. That sounds good."

Caller ID said "Chandler Primar" and in that moment "Primar" equalled "primary" which equalled "kids school" which equalled "oh crap what's wrong with the kids?" Didn't matter that the school's actual caller ID says the school's name.

 

"Hello?" I said.

 

"Hi this is garblegarblegarble from Dr. D's office," she said.

 

Dr. D? Is this one of the kids' doctors? No, that's Dr. N. Oh, wait, I'm coming to my senses now: Dr. D is my new primary care physician. OK, I got it.

 

"Oh, hi," I said.

 

She stumbled on her words as she began: "Dr. D got your recent bloodwork back and everything looks fine. Your clotting numbers all look good."

 

"OK good," I said, relieved.

Last week, I spent several days in Mexico on vacation and on a business trip. With the extra carbs and the change in normal routine, my averages went from the 140's to the high 150's. I had one or two severe lows and a handful of minor lows. I also had one day where my pump site went sour and sent me soaring into the 300's for several hours.

 

Coming back from Mexico has been interesting on my blood sugars. I've had a few lows, of course. But at the same time, I've decided not to try so hard to keep my numbers down. I'm not completely blowing it, but I'm just not stressing myself out over highs and off numbers.

 

So Monday night, I decided to order a pizza while working on a research paper. It was nice to eat the pizza, do a fairly normal bolus, but not stress about what my blood sugar might be in the next 12 hours. I didn't even freak out when I saw consistent 200's on my meter screen.

Here I sit wearily, just my favorite meter and me. Staring at a blood sugar of two hundred and thirty three.

 

 

I was happily rolling smooth, and on track all day today. But now am confusedly flustered and in the grips of dismay.

 

 

How did my glucose get to be so darn high?

I know my tubeless pump is secured firmly to my thigh.

 

 

It wasn't the early lunch of carb free salad with chicken. Guess I should have just had water or stuck to lime wedge lickin'.

 

 

Time to punch in a bolus and get some more insulin to flow.

Oh hell, I don't have my pump's controller- where oh where did it go!?

As a health writer, one of the perks of my job is that I get to talk to experts. One of the questions I often ask is, "What is the best advice you'd give someone with diabetes?"

 

And of all the interviews I have done, I think the best response came from Linda Dale, RN, CDE, Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Outpatient Diabetes Eduction Program at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Diabetes Center. The article was about testing your blood sugar.

With insulin active, we gave it an hour

Remember that song that the Red Hot Chili Peppers covered? Roller Coaster of Love? I always think of Olivia's crazy blood sugars when I hear that song. And this week, that song has been on a permanent loop in my head.

Starting on Saturday, Olivia's blood sugar never got below 168. She mentioned that she was running high, but I didn't download her pump information until Monday. That's when I saw exactly how high she'd been running. It wasn't pretty.

She had a high of 527. Most of her blood sugars were hovering around the 300 mark. This was exacerbated by the fact that, once again, she's been neglecting to test and put the blood sugar reading into her pump. On Saturday, there were only 2 readings in the pump. Everything else was just a bolus for carb intake.

I find that dinner seems to throw my sugars off worse than anything! I guess I just can't help myself whenever it gets to be chow time. I LOVE ME SOME FOOD! It never fails; I'll go through the whole day and not have one high sugar and then BAM! Hyperglycemia CITY!

My eyes get way too big for my stomach!

Usually I'll come home after a long day, start raiding the cabinets and throwing random stuff together, next thing you know, I got a plate a nachos, some peanut butter cookies, and a Popsicle!

I know, I know, I am supposed to eat healthy all the time...or something like that. I don't want people to think that because I'm a trainer that I eat perfect every day! I'm only human!

I came across this article recently from the BD Newsletter and it got me thinking about how Olivia behaves when her blood sugar is high.

Normally, she's your average teen-ager. She's sometimes sullen, sometimes goofy, sometimes talkative, all in a five minute span. But when her blood sugar is high, she can become weepy, rude, argumentative and very, very unpleasant. The really high highs make her feel sick, but it's the somewhat high highs that I loathe.
