We had a spate of hot weather at the beginning of June and Olivia, like the rest of us, was guzzling liquids like no tomorrow. At the time, all we had in the house was lemonade mix, juice and water. She does drink a fair amount of water, but was also drinking a lot of juice and lemonade. I wasn't thrilled with all the extra calories she was taking in, not to mention the cost of restocking all that juice and lemonade. It's amazing how quickly the people in my house go thru that stuff - I don't drink it, but man, I hear about it when it's gone.

Last night my buddy and I played some Racquetball. When I got off of work at 4:00 pm the temperature outside was a whopping 104° F. I figured this would be a total sweat fest and a great opportunity to melt some pounds off.

I've worked really hard the past few months to lose some weight. I've been eating better (cutting out fast food, "extras" like dinner rolls or second servings, and leaving the snacks on the snack aisle at the grocery store). On top of that, I'm working out about three times a week either at the gym or on the treadmill at home. And I'm proud to say that I've lost six pounds and several inches.
But the past week has thrown a major kink in my progress. I'm too scared to even step on the scale to see how these low and "lower" blood sugars are affecting me. I know my calorie intake has increased between the cokes, snacks, and extra carbs I'm consuming to offset these things.

Let's see. What's going on.
I have poison ivy. It's driving me insane. I don't think it will go away until at least February 2010. I do wonder how it would affect Charlie's blood sugar if I infected him.
Unlikely to happen though. Susanne has me quarantined in the basement bathroom, resting in a tub filled with hydrocortisone.
"Don't touch daddy!" It can be heard all day - thwarting attempts by the kids to climb me like a mountain or swing from my arms like a helicopter blade or take me hostage in some sort of secret agent operative.
It does have its perks though.
"Carey, can you give Ben a bath?"
"Sure. Let me just roll up my sleeves" [revealing a growth of small pink bumps climbing up my forearm like Clematis].

Early fall wind blew threw the house as No. 1 and I sat at the dining room table. He was doing homework and I was keeping him company while going through the mail. The girls were alternatingly reading to each other and turning the TV up so blaringly loud that even No. 1 started to scold them like a parent.
Between writing spelling words and their definitions, No. 1 said, "Dinner smells good, Mom."
"Yeah, it really does," I said, thinking I should check the timer on the chicken I had baking in the oven.
It was a Wednesday evening and the fourth day in a row that I had made dinner instead of saying I was too hot, too tired, too annoyed or too lazy to do so and taking the family out for dinner. It had recently occurred to me that we didn't eat out nearly as often when No. 1 and No. 2 were toddlers as we seem to now that No. 3 is a toddler. I hated realizing that. (READ MORE)

While in Mexico, my previous pleasant numbers took a turn for the worst. My averages jumped from 130 to 170. Despite proactive measures and many reactive measures, I could not seem to control any of my blood sugars.
My blood sugars ran fine the first two days. I actually ended up low for the majority of the time, so I lowered my basal. We were walking all over the city, in the heat for extended periods of time, and eating at unusual times (11 pm for dinner).

For months now I have been waiting to do this. I had only to get my veins into a lab and have my A1C taken so my experiment could be put into motion. I had my end of the supplies ordered up and the rest was up to the dueling laboratories of, BIOSAFE and my local medical facility.

It may be strange or alarming, but I've often imagined being kidnapped. I watch a lot of TV crime dramas, so the thoughts tend to race through my head. I imagine my reaction as a human, as a woman, and as a diabetic.
As a human, I know that I'm not giving up without a fight. My life is precious and valuable, whether someone else sees that or not. I would try every plan to escape or leave every clue to allow the police to do their jobs quickly and efficiently.
As a woman, the same truths apply. I'm not giving up without a fight. I refuse to give in to whatever threats unless I've tried my hardest to get away or delay the action.

Good grief, it's been hot here. Depending on which bank I was driving past, it was either 99, 101 or 103 today. Any one of them is too freakin' hot, especially for early June and most especially for New England. My Yankee bones don't like that kind of temperature one little bit.
Nor do Olivia's. She's been miserable the last few days. Weather had a lot to do with it and I've been making sure she's checking her blood sugars frequently and staying well hydrated. Her numbers haven't been great, but I don't know whether I can attribute that to the weather or to the fact that she just got dumped by her boyfriend.

When you think about the weather in Phoenix what's one of the first phrases that comes to your mind? C'mon, I know you know it. Yep, "It's a dry heat."
Well, that's definitely true. It's quite dry here. I can feel fine just before leaving the house for my walk and within the first two minutes I feel absolutely parched.
So, while it's dry, it's still hot. Really hot. I'm amazed at the number of people I see exercising outside in the middle of the day. All I can think is how crazy they are! This is yet another reason why I walk in the early morning; I'm out the door before 5:45 a.m., preferably by 5:35 a.m., but some mornings require a few more minutes to get my tired butt out of bed.
