I modified a recipe from the Hungry Girl website for a low sugar eggnog and found it very acceptable. It has nearly the same taste and mouth feel as the lite eggnog I've been drinking. It may be a bit late for this year's holiday season, but there's still New Year's.
The original recipe is here. My version is below.
Low Sugar Eggnog
6 C 1% milk 1 Tbsp vanilla extract 1 small (4-serving) package Jell-O Sugar Free Fat Free Instant Pudding mix, Vanilla 6 no-calorie sweetener packets (like Splenda) 1 tsp Mace (or nutmeg) (optional) 6 oz dark rum or 1 tsp rum extract (READ MORE)

Last week, I started a new "game" with myself. I call it Five For Five. I focus on five healthy habits for five days, earning points as I go and working toward a reward. Each week, the points accumulate for an even bigger reward.
I'm proud to report that I earned 23 of a possible 25 points last week. My daily habits were drinking three liters of water, exercising for at least 30 minutes, doing 25 sit-ups, testing my blood sugar three out of four times and not eating any junk. I expected finding 30 minutes to exercise each day would be my biggest challenge, but it turns out that wasn't the case.
The two points I missed last week were for sit-ups. The first one, I'd gotten as far as 15 when the little boy started having a melt down next to me. I thought I'd get back to the other 10 in a little while, but the day got away from me and I forgot. Then on the last day of the game, I didn't do them at all. (READ MORE)

It's quite possibly one of the worst things I go through as a diabetic: the ongoing debate between the rational and irrational sides of my brain. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to push the thought out of my head to buy candy or junk food only to have my irrational side drive me to the nearest convenience store.
I've never been hypnotized, although my junior high friends and I all tried to hypnotize each other during sleep overs, but I'm starting to seriously consider it lately as a way to modify my eating habits. I mean, if people use it to stop smoking and women can use it for childbirth and dentists use it for patients who are fearful of getting a cavity filled, then why can't I use it to get me to stop eating junk? The Mr. took No. 1 to his last well-child doctor's visit. I should have gone. I'm such an information junkie that I ask so many questions of The Mr. after things like this that it would have just made more sense for me to have gone.

 

I was shocked to learn that No. 1 is in the 91st percentile for weight. Dr. N, who I absolutely love, sent a note home about increasing the amount of fruits and veggies No. 1 eats and decreasing the amount of fats and sugars he eats.

We are almost two months into 2009, so I'd thought I'd self-asses how my resolutions are coming along. I've been slowly implenting them into my life in the past 7 weeks to avoid giving them up all together. I have to say, I'm liking the changes that I've seen in myself. Of course, there are some that I still need to work on though. So here's the rundown:

 

1) Exercise more: I haven't started this at all, which I'm greatly disappointed in since it was my top priority. I'm still planning to start jogging two times a week, but haven't found much spare time in the month of February. I'm still looking for a treadmill too. I know exercising will help me lose a few pounds, plus get my blood sugars into range with less need for insulin.

I know, I know, I know. People with diabetes must exercise. People with diabetes must stay fit. This is especially true for those of us with Type 2.
And you know it. I know it. You know you know it. I know you know it. Who needs to tell you this?
Reuters and Dr. Ronald Sigal of University of Calgary and colleagues at the University of Ottawa, as announced in this article, do feel the need to tell us. Specifically, they're telling us that lifting weights and resistance exercise also helps to reduce blood sugars, just like aerobic exercise does. Aerobic exercise, that would be the sweaty kind.
This is good news.
This means that ANY and ALL exercise you do counts for good diabetes points. It all counts! I love this. (READ MORE)

The list of things I shouldn't eat is long. And I typically ignore the list.

 

I'm a chocoholic. Pretty much everyone in my life knows it (even my seventh-grade boyfriend knew it!). One of my favorite phrases is, "This requires chocolate." I do feel guilty, though. Well, not guilty so much as self conscious. 

 

Today after lunch I got that familiar I-need-chocolate-after-lunch feeling. I grabbed $1.50 in change and walked to the other building.

As a type 2 diabetic woman, I was shocked to discover how little information is available about pregnancy and diabetes. At first glance, it looks as if there's a ton on the topic. Google "pregnancy and diabetes" and several million pages come up. But dig a little closer and you'll see the majority of those pages are about diabetes of pregnancy, or gestational diabetes. I've recently learned that if I want to get something accomplished, I'd better make a game out of it. Like when I wanted to try to save money on groceries, I played the Grocery Game . And when hubby and I decided we needed to cut back on spending, we instituted No Money Mondays, where we don't spend any money on Mondays.
Now that I'm trying hard to get back on the weight-loss track, I've decided a new game is in order. I'm calling it "Five For Five." The rules are simple; I focus on five healthy habits for five days a week. For each habit I successfully accomplish each day, I earn one point. If I've earned 20 out of 25 points at the end of the round, I earn reward. (READ MORE)

I am going to begin this, my very first blog post here, with a confession.
I have fallen off the wagon.
Not the booze wagon; even before my type 2 diagnosis in February 2006, my drinky drink days were mostly behind me. (College was fun, from what I remember.) No, the wagon I have fallen off of is the healthy living, weight-losing, diabetic-under-control wagon.
When I was diagnosed last year, my a1c was hovering above 10, and I was about 35 pounds overweight. I was also terrified. I was 38 years old, with that big number (let's call it "thirty-ten") lurking in the near future. My own father died at the age of fifty-one after about twenty years of poorly managed diabetes. I was determined that this wouldn't be me. (READ MORE)

MikeDurbinMike was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on December 29, 2008, and congestive heart failure the very next day. Talk about a double whammy for anyone, let alone a 24 year old.  He didn’t have to come up with New Year’s resolutions that year; his doctors did that for him.  That kind of humor has been instrumental in keeping him, and those around him, going over the last year and a half.
