There are a lot of things in this world that I don't understand and don't choose to understand. Politics is one of them. I despise politics. I don't do office politics, I don't play games with people, I feel like I'm a straight-shoting tell-it-like-it-is kind of person. So, I really don't like politics. Which means I don't pay attention to bills and votes and all that nonsense. I should, I've tried, but I don't.

 

I do know enough to know that the passage of the health-care reform bill today and the fact that it's being sent to President Obama's desk to be signed in to law (which it will) is a big deal.

I despise politics -- political or office or otherwise. First I don't really understand much of it and second I just don't see why people have to act like high school all the time.

 

It's only been recently that I paid much attention to the presidential election. I remember voting in my first presidential election; I was a senior in college and voting by absentee ballot. I felt it was my civic duty to vote, but I couldn't figure out what the real issues were because there was so much mud slinging. The guy I voted for won, but I remember thinking "He hasn't done such a bad job the last four years, so he's probably the lesser of the two evils." Yes, that's seriously what I based my vote on.

It's my time...to plan phase 2 of my healthcare team.

 

I'm a girl. A 21-year-old girl. A girl who has spent the last year listening to friend's talk about engagements, attending weddings of high school pals, and buying baby shower gifts for my already-coupled friends. Sometimes it feels like everywhere I turn, someone else is getting engaged or married or growing their family.

 

All that means that my mind is constantly confronted with the fact that potential coupledom and familyhood is in my future. That means I spend a lot of time thinking about this future, with these couples and families of my imagination. My mind trails in daydreams to consider the kind of guy I want to marry, getting pregnant, and growing old together.

I wonder if there is a better way. I have been using the same pharmacy for two years now and they have done a perfectly good job for me. But the rigmarole involved seems a bit much, even with all the modern conveniences involved. Every month before my Novolog and test strip stronghold runs out I go to the Longs Pharmacy website and plunk in my prescription numbers, store pick-up number, name, e-mail, phone number, and check a couple of boxes to get my online refill request sent off. Then a day or two later when I am sure they are ready for pick-up, I drive over to the pharmacy being actively aware of when they close because I inevitably need the Novolog by now, do the in-line wait, and fork over some money. Well, Carnival for a Cure, anyway -- the annual fundraising event presented by the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI). Four years ago, it was at this event that Nick Jonas went public with his type 1 diabetes. This year, he returned, courtesy of Bayer HealthCare, to thank everyone and to continue to inspire children, teens, and adults with diabetes. Through dLife, I had the opportunity to speak with Nick and ask him about his life with diabetes. My own challenge was, in ten minutes, to see if I could learn something that hasn't been asked and answered hundreds of times over. (READ MORE)

We hear it over and over again: delays in seeking medical treatment are responsible for huge numbers of preventable deaths each year. Sometimes the delays are financial: not having the money to pay the doctor, buy the medication, schedule the procedure. Sometimes they are logistical: unable to get time off work, car isn't working (or a driver isn't available), or there isn't an available doctor or treatment facility space within the necessary timeframe. Then there are the diagnostic delays -- often because life-threatening medical conditions don't show symptoms until they reach emergency status, but sometimes because the condition is difficult for one's healthcare team to diagnose.

 

In this case, though, the expression is idiomatic, and the cause, meteorological. At least, that's what I'm going with.

While I posted yesterday that Nick Jonas was in New York Sunday for the Diabetes Research Institute's Carnival for a Cure, I didn't mention much about the event itself. Billed as "New York City's largest indoor carnival," the event was a cross between a street fair and an arcade, aimed largely at the under-twelve crowd. Three walls of the Metropolitan Pavillion were lined with inflatable mazes, slides, and bounce rooms, and a human-powered "mechanical bull". Several street-fair games-of-skill, aimed again at the under-twelve set, occupied a block of canopies in the center of the room. Prize tickets were given to the winners, and by the end of the afternoon almost every family there was wrangling multiple shopping bags of toys. (READ MORE)

It's Election Day. As the polls are continuing to count their votes, I'm watching the news coverage mostly unaffected. I know that whomever takes the country this year is going to bring big change for all of us. It's that kind of year. Even if it isn't a presidential election.

 

The votes are coming in with an overwhelming Republican projected sweep. Generally, I would vote Republican because I tend to be more conservative when it comes to taxes, gun control, et cetera. Yet I'm a moderate which means that I don't side with either party. I'm the kind of voter that would much rather pick and choose topics rather than parties. Let me vote yes or no for the "don't ask, don't tell" act. Or choose how the healthcare reform should be handled. Don't make me pick a party.

One of the participants at my recent talk on Connected Medical Devices was concerned that transmitting our medical data to our doctors via e-mail (an unsecure platform) or sharing it in crowdsourced applications (such as TuAnalyze) might be in violation of HIPAA regulations. The thing about HIPAA is that it restricts your healthcare providers from disclosing your health information without your consent (or a legal mandate of some sorts); it doesn't restrict you from sharing the health data you have collected yourself (or received from your healthcare providers).

I was recently asked to suggest some information for a diabetic in another country. I can’t say that I have ever done much research on the topic of diabetes in a foreign place. I’ve thought about health care and how difficult it must be for those that don’t have immediate access for the disease. Yet, I’ve never taken the time to truly research information and find the reality in the situation.
