I was recently asked to suggest some information for a diabetic in another country. I can’t say that I have ever done much research on the topic of diabetes in a foreign place. I’ve thought about health care and how difficult it must be for those that don’t have immediate access for the disease. Yet, I’ve never taken the time to truly research information and find the reality in the situation.

I guess technically, I joined the diabetes online community back in October, 2005 when I joined dLife, and I became active in the overall DOC some time in 2008 -- but it wasn't until this year that I, and others, had the opportunity to "eyeball" the folk we'd been e-mailing, blogging to, commenting blog posts from, tweeting, and otherwise conversing with on various diabetes-related forums and social networks. 2009 is also the year dLife launched the dLife Community, and the year I started blogging here at Blogabetes.

It occurred to us that Charlie doesn't get many requests for play dates from his classmates. It's not like he doesn't have friends. He gets along with everyone in his class. He's actually fairly popular. Still, the invitations to come over houses are scarce.
It makes us wonder if the parents think it would just be too difficult. Or maybe they just assume we could never just leave him somewhere without someone trained in diabetes care keeping an eye on him. Well, they wouldn't be wrong if they thought that. We want to let him do things without us hovering over him like low-gliding seagulls, but how can we? He doesn't test himself yet.

I've been somewhat ambivalent about today's rally surrounding the United Nations Summit on Non-Communicable Diseases. The libertarian "party line" is that the United Nations does little more than abrogate nation-states' sovereignty and forcibly redistribute income from the wealthier nations to the less-wealthy, dampening incentives for innovation and destroying private charity efforts which would otherwise improve the lives of those in need. On the other hand, the prospect of spending time with friends I seldom see in-person is an opportunity not to be missed.
It's a dilemma I'd been wrestling with for a couple of months, and friendship was winning over politics. However, neither friendship nor politics had the choice to decide.
The deciding factor was money.

Saturday night, the vice-president of our Friends of Faire group delivered a well-worded "toast to the immortal memory", in which he named Robert Burns "the Bard of Scotland" in the way that Shakespeare is "the Bard of England" (not to mention most of the rest of the English-speaking world!). As our festivities were dedicated to a member who had recently and unexpectedly died, her life was also celebrated in this toast, and her passing, mourned.

It's unusual for me to have nightmares — especially nightmares about flying. Mine are usually about family relationships gone completely awry. But facing a World Diabetes Day on which I am working at a place whose uniform does not allow even a touch of blue, having given Nick Jonas my last World Diabetes Day pin (and not having had the money to replenish my stash), and having failed to have the presence of mind to do the Big Blue Test at least once (even though I am bicycling to and from work at least half the time), I feel a bit like a diabetes failure. I'm interested in the high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) debate, which has been in the news again. I believe it probably is a factor in the "epidemic" of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
I thought the Corn Refiners Association's ads this fall (here & here were a touch defensive. Can you say "the lady doth protest too much"?
What I missed until now was the hilarious YouTube backlash at these ads. Watch this, or this or search for HFCS and peruse dozens of videos.

Today is World Diabetes Day. Honestly, for me, every day is diabetes day - this is just another of the days of my life.
I see the importance of the day more in terms of people living with diabetes in developing nations - where diabetes education and treatment is difficult to come by and in terms of people in our own country who - because of lack of adequate insurance coverage, resources, and finances - are at much greater risk than I. Those are the people for whom this day matters most.
Can you imagine watching your child get sicker and sicker - and having no doctor to bring them to, no resources (online or otherwise) to consult about symptoms or diagnosis, no way to get to a medical facility other than a two to five day journey on foot?

The February "O - The Oprah Magazine" arrived last week and I just got to take a look at it. Our dLife reader and commenter, diabeteshope, called it perfectly last month right here. It seems that Oprah's weight gain she attributed to a thyroid problem may well have been hormone related. MOST people really cannot go off thyroid medication after they have started it.
Oprah says that after just ONE DAY of taking bioidentical hormones, she started feeling better. Boy, I didn't know any legal drugs worked that quickly! (Just kidding!)
