Why can't diabetes give me some room to get some things done this season? I swear, I have had more "diabetes in the way" moments lately which is driving me nuts!
So there I was, cruising through the local Target store looking for some gifts for a gift exchange party we were invited too. I could not decide on a fun gift like a board game or go with the décor type like a cool candle or something. Now keep in mind I was power walking through the store because all I want to do is get my gift and get the heck out. I like most guys am not a shopper at all. Frankly, I hate shopping.
As I am standing in an aisle staring at the wall o' board games a sudden feeling of hunger hits me. It was more like famine. Let's just say that I almost tore open the Ice Cream Cone puzzle and started eating pieces. Then the sweating started. Great, a Christmas Shopping low. (READ MORE)

This time of year always reminds me of the many gifts life has brought me.

Sure, things are difficult at times.  But we simply can't let those difficult times be our focus.  This realization is a gift from my mother.

At the time of my diagnosis, and in the many years since, she has again and again (sometimes with just a knowing glance or a soft smile), let me know that I can do the difficult things.  She has told me, with confidence, that I am strong, smart, capable.  And she has reminded me that the thing that says the most about a person is how they behave or react when things are challenging.

Dear Santa Baby,
Ok, maybe I'm not on your list of good persons with diabetes this year, but surely I'm not on the naughty PWD list either! My A1C has stayed in the 5's all year. I had a baby WITHOUT macrosomia. So I think I can ask for a few items your elves might be able to whip up, if not for this year, surely in time for next year's yule. (READ MORE)

On Thanksgiving Day, my four year old nephew noticed me test my bloodsugar for the first time.  A look of dire concern spread across his little face as I drew blood from my finger.  I told him that Aunty needed to test and see what her numbers were before she ate so that she could give her medicine and not get sick.  He nodded, still looking concerned, and said, "medicine, like for my eyes?"  Born with cataracts and structural issues in both of his eyes, he has had more surgeries in his first four years than most people have in their lifetime, has worn contact lenses and glasses since he was three months old, and medicine is a word he's known for entirely too long.

It's my time...to plan phase 2 of my healthcare team.

I'm a girl. A 21-year-old girl. A girl who has spent the last year listening to friend's talk about engagements, attending weddings of high school pals, and buying baby shower gifts for my already-coupled friends. Sometimes it feels like everywhere I turn, someone else is getting engaged or married or growing their family.

All that means that my mind is constantly confronted with the fact that potential coupledom and familyhood is in my future. That means I spend a lot of time thinking about this future, with these couples and families of my imagination. My mind trails in daydreams to consider the kind of guy I want to marry, getting pregnant, and growing old together.

Or; People Aren't As Bad As I Sometimes Think They Are.

My Dear Santa letter the other day was my usual somewhat sarcastic offering, something I tossed off as I was perusing the Salter scale website and lusting after that sweet, sex-ay model they have. I threw in the other two items to make up a list.

Someone on the TuDiabetes site saw it, though, and asked if she could buy the pump skins for Olivia. I was slightly embarrassed, hoping that no one mistook my usual snark-fest as actual requests for gifts. When she assured me that was not the case, that she just wanted to do something nice because "it's hard enough being a teenager with diabetes," I said yes.

The skins arrived today and Olivia wasted no time in having me apply one of them. The tie dyed one. It was, in her words "Sweet!" Which made me laugh.

It was a very nice early Christmas present. And she will be sending off a thank you email tonight.

Every year, my mom and I do a massive family Christmas party. We spend countless hours thinking, planning, and doing in order to prepare. There's the Christmas tree and decorations, lots of gifts, groceries, and the actual cooking. On top of the cleaning, organizing, and menu-planning.

This year, we decided to change things up a bit. After all, we're just plain tired of the same ol' traditions that honestly and secretly, nobody really cares about. We actually almost didn't get a Christmas tree since I was coming in so late this year.

But we did. And we did a lot of the same old stuff. Like a turkey. And spinach casserole (only because I insisted since it is my favorite dish of all time). But we've changed up the menu on a lot of fronts.

Recently, I was trying to explain the view from the diabetes seat to someone.

This is a challenging thing to do, particularly without stirring pity in the other party; something I'm loathe to do.  In my opinion, we've all got things to bear, big things - small things, things.

I suppose the view from the diabetes seat is much like the view from the seat of other chronic disease.

I started by saying - diabetes is unpredictable.

One of the odd observances of the Christmas Skeptic is the effect of today's gift-giving Santa Claus on the development of greed amongst children. The observation is somewhat paradoxical considering greed is considered one of the Seven Deadly Sins.

The phonetic syllables /mey dey/ are rife with meaning.

As a child, I envisioned "May Day" much in the manner in which Renaissance Faire players open and close the faire day: with costumed dancers weaving around a flower-and-ribbon-festooned pole, creating intricate patterns in both ribbon and step as they pass over and under each other, turning around and around and around. At some point along that axis, the vision of morris dancing entered the picture, as well as hunting, flower gathering, and so on. In short, May Day had entered the common vernacular as a more meaningful celebration of spring than the vernal equinox itself. (Then again, how many buds, leaves, blooms, and blossoms do we see around St. Patrick's Day?)
