So the flub is really starting to get to me. That is, the flub that's making my pants feel tight, my shirts feel smaller and all that other good stuff that comes with extra weight.
Driving home tonight from work -- I have a one-hour commute now instead of roughly 10 minutes -- I started thinking about when exactly I could fit some exercise into my daily routine. Between getting up at 5:30 a.m. so I can leave by 7 a.m. and often not getting home until after 6 p.m. and taking care of three kids and completing a bunch of freelance work and taking care of a new house there's not much time in the day for exercise.
For a long time I've enjoyed exercising first thing in the morning. I used to say that if it didn't happen as soon as I got up it wasn't gonna happen at all. And when you live in the desert in the summer, exercising outside in the morning is really the best advice!

Spring Break is coming up in three weeks. I'm heading out to the tropics. My wardrobe: swimsuits, shorts, tank tops and short skirts. Of course, I'm thinking about how my body is going to look in a bikini and hip-hugging shorts. I decided I need to lose the extra pounds I put on in the last few weeks (amazing how fast it jumps up without you even noticing). (READ MORE)

I am a gamer. I love playing video games either on my PC or on our Nintendo Wii.
2 weeks ago I was able to get my hands on the last Wii Fit being sold at our local retailer. In case you are not familiar with what Wii Fit you should check out this video clip.
Wii Fit is a fitness game from Nintendo that works using the Wii controllers and the Wii Fit Balance Board. The Balance Board is a highly sensitive peripheral that can measure a user’s weight and center of gravity. The software that comes with it can calculate your BMI when told the user’s height.

I’ve written about the “diabetes secret handshake” on previous occasions – the externally-visible insulin pump, the furtive-but-public jab of an insulin pen, the naturally-obsessive counting of M&Ms, Smarties, or raisins – or the presence of glucose tablets.
Not that I really need them, but over time I’ve acquired a small stash of glucose tabs at health fairs and diabetes expos.Since another colleague – who works at an adjacent station where he cannot keep “food” – has a history of metformin-mediated lows, I’ve taken to keeping one of those tubes stashed in the unlocked space of my workspace, to be used if/as needed, no questions asked.

As much as I complain or write emotional entries about this disease, I do have my days where I am thankful. Today is one of those days. I have to say that without diabetes I would lack some major motivation! I have to remind myself that without this disease I wouldn't be so motivated to stay healthy or be the person that I am. It's funny, because at any given time I could be feeling completely irritated by it or absolutely thankful. Because of Diabetes mellitus I am fit, driven, and obsessed with good food!

I believe a good workout comes with sweat. Which is why I don’t exercise during my lunch break and also why I prefer to exercise first thing in the morning.
I prefer to do my exercise walking outside. Using a treadmill is a last resort for me. I’m one of those weird people who’s more likely to exercise if it means I *don’t* have to go to the gym.
I’ve written a number of times lately about being committed to figuring out how to fit exercise into my schedule. The farthest I’ve gotten is the part where I say I’m going to think about it. But I’m getting fluffy and clothes that used to fit beautifully aren’t so much any more. Plus, I feel good when I exercise.

Thursday evening was the awards dinner for two of the three New Jersey Tours de Cure (the third will take place in two weeks). Since The Other Half couldn't get off work, I had to go solo. I'm not completely uncomfortable going out without an escort, but I am rather shy about reaching out to meet other people. I need a hook -- a segue -- something to break the ice. I knew that there would be some folk I'd met before -- Taran (the Skylands Tour's coordinator) and a couple of the committee folk and riders. I also expected them to not have a lot of free/mingling time, or to be with other folk. The sit-down-dinner nature of this event in a way forced me to meet new people.

I started applying to jobs as soon as I got back from my vacation. Maybe it was the thought of spending the next few months living with my mom or maybe it was all the money that I watched leave my bank account for the trip. Probably a bit of both plus my inherent need to be working or studying.
I haven't applied to that many so far because I just can't seem to find things that fit. Either I'm not interested in them or my qualifications don't fit what the company is looking for. Plus I'm just not sure what types of jobs I want to lock into right now.
I'm trying to focus on two main areas at the moment. Health care. And social services. Some combination of the two is really what I'm hoping for, but we can't be too picky. So I've applied for jobs like "Patient Navigator" or "Health Pro" and even today I applied for a pharmaceutical sales position.

This morning, I had (literally) the toughest workout of my life. I joined a program called Strikingly Fit - a six week fitness and weight loss program - at a women's boxing gym. Today's workout was called "12 rounds." 12 four minute rounds of tough exercise. Running, jumping rope, lateral movement with squats, sit ups, push ups, planks, punching. It was awesome. And I feel incredibly strong having completed it.

The other day, I took Olivia shopping for clothes. She'd received some money for Christmas and was eager to spend it, as 13 year-old girls are wont to do.
We schlepped down to the mall and started looking and I was appalled. Not by skimpy or slutty clothing, but by the sizes. I don't know who they are making these clothes for, but some of the size smalls would have fit my three year-old.
Olivia isn't skinny. She's built like me - busty and hippy. It's a pain in the butt to shop when you're built like that. But she only weighs 130 lbs - she's not overweight. She's normal. She's curvy. She looks like a young woman, not like a scare crow.
As I helped her pick out clothes and watched her try stuff on, I could see the discouragement and pain on her face. Nothing fit. Even larges were too snug. She was almost in tears by the end of the day. I felt so bad for her because I know exactly what she's going thru.
